The notation and environment in conceptual modelling transform developers' initial perception about a system to a concrete model. Any usability constraints that the notation and environment impose on the modeling process affect not only the quality of the model but also the quality of the final product. This paper presents a usability profile for designing conceptual modelling methods that integrate graphical notation and formal mathematical notation. The profile was proposed based on a survey conducted on an instance of such methods, which combines the Unified Modelling Language (UML) and Event-B. The instruments used in the survey were the Cognitive Dimensions of Notations (CD) framework and several criteria suggested by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The analysis was conducted using the grounded theory approach. Thirteen participants responded to the survey. The survey suggests that graphical formal modelling requires deep understanding of the notations involved, strong support from the environment, well-organised models and high spatial ability. © 2009 IOS Press. The electric power is indispensable and its stable supply is always expected. A stable supply needs the real-time observation of load conditions by measurement of power factor. In addition, the various faults have been caused from the harmonic voltage and current. In the authors' laboratory, the sensor, which simultaneously measures both the waveforms of the voltage and current without contacting the conductors in the three-phase power distribution system directly, has been designed and implemented. Using the sensor, we will observe the power factor and harmonics from the measured waveforms of voltage and current in power distribution line. However, the experimental sensor was designed to be applied to the 6.6 kV power distribution system in the dielectric strength. The authors will propose the sensor for the 22 kV power distribution system and investigate the output characteristics of this new sensor from numerical results based on the finite element method.

Software testing is one of the most important techniques used to assure the quality of Web Services at present. Test-data generation is an important topic in Web Services testing. The quality of test data will influence the efficiency and cost when testing Web Services. Based on the contract-based mutation testing technique, this paper presents a method of automated test-data generation for Web Services. First, according to the description information and contracts in WSDL documents of Web Services, initial test data are generated automatically by the random method. Then the test data are selected using contract mutation testing. This method can generate a test suite meeting a certain contract mutation score, which indicates the quality and efficiency of testing. Finally, we have developed a prototype on the *** platform, and carried out some experiments. The results have shown that the proposed method is effective in automated test-data generation for Web Services.

This paper presents object detection and modeling algorithm for automatic visual people counting system to identify individuals from top view images acquired from an overhead surveillance camera. This work proposes Snake algorithm with effective external energy function and a half-circle template initialization for modeling passengers. The experiment result showed that the proposed method could fit the Snake to the head and shoulder boundaries of the passengers effectively. Fitting error of 3.76 pixels per control point was obtained in our experiment. The information is not only useful for verifying humans but also for extracting appearance features to enhance performance of the subsequent tracking algorithm.

In wavelet-based Bayesian denoising, the performance of several methods strongly depends on the correctness of the distribution that is used to describe the data. Therefore, the selection of a proper model for distribution is thus an important issue in the denoising process. This paper presents a new image denoising algorithm based on bivariate Pearson type VII distribution with approximated MAP estimation for statistical parameter (local variance) using Rayleigh density priori for observed variance and Gaussian distribution for noisy wavelet coefficients. The bivariate probability density function (pdf) takes into account the statistical dependency among wavelet coefficients, the local variation and the correlation between the coefficient amplitudes. The experimental results show that the proposed technique outperforms several exiting methods both visually and in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR).

Bit-serial architectures offer a number of attractive features over their bit-parallel counterparts such as smaller area cost, lower density interconnection, a reduced number of pins, higher clock frequency, simpler routing and etc. These attractive features make them suitable for using in VLSI design and reduce overall production cost. In this paper, we propose the first least significant bit (LSB) bit-serial sum of absolute difference (SAD) hardware accelerator for integer variable block size motion estimation (VBSME) of H.264. This hardware accelerator is based on a previous state-of-art bit-parallel architecture namely propagate partial SAD. In order to reduce area cost and improve throughput, pixel truncation technique is adopted. Due to the bit-serial pipeline architecture and using small processing elements, our architecture works at much higher clock frequency (at least 4 times) and reduces area cost about 32% compared with its bit-parallel counterpart. The proposed hardware accelerator can be used in different disciplines from low bit rate to high bit rate by making a tradeoff between the degree of parallelism or using fast algorithm or a combination of both.

“Digital holography for 3D and 4D real-world objects' capture, processing, and display” (acronym “Real 3D”) is a research project funded under the Information and Communication Technologies theme of the European Commission's Seventh Framework Programme, and brings together nine participants from academia and industry (see ***). This three-year project marks the beginning a long-term effort to facilitate the entry of a new technology (digital holography) into the three-dimensional capture and display markets. Its progress at the end of year 2 is summarised.

There have been significant advances in fabrication of high-density microelectrode arrays using silicon micromachining technology in neural signal recording systems. The interface between microelectrodes and chemical environment brings great interest to researchers working on extracellular stimulation. This interface is quite complex and must be modeled carefully to match experimental results. computer simulation is a method to increase the knowledge about these arrays and to this end the finite element method provides a strong environment for investigation of relative changes of the electrical field extension surrounding an electrode positioned in chemical environment. In this paper FEM simulation environment is used for modeling the metal-chemical interface, which is helpful for circuit designers to design front-end electronics more efficiently and reliable.

Finding relevant information from a long list of search results returned by general search engine can be difficult. The categorization technique is applied to solve this problem. One possible approach is by using some external resources such as Open Directory Project (ODP) to map search result's URLs into the ODP categories. However, the ODP can only map some part of all URLs that returned from search engine. In this paper, we present a method of Web search result categorization based on classification technique by applying external information from the ODP. First, we categorize the search results by using information from the ODP as training data set. We then generate the categorizers from the training data based on centroid-based classification algorithm for categorized remaining uncategorized search results. The experimental result of proposed method achieved high performance of categorization comparing with an effective ODP classifier from previous work.

Flame Spray Synthesis, FSS, was used to grow TiO2-based nanopowders from which TiO2:Cr nanosensors were obtained. Structural properties of crystalline TiO2:Cr nanopowders at different Cr loadings (0.1-5.0 at. % Cr) have been investigated. Material studies have been performed using standard methods: X-ray Diffraction, XRD, Transmission Electron Microscopy, TEM, and Brunauer-Emmett- Teller, BET, adsorption isotherms. High specific surface area SSA (37-126 m2/g) and small crystallite size (9-27 nm) have been reached. Incorporation of Cr into TiO2 lattice affects the specific surface area of nanopowders, crystallite size and rutile - to anatase ratio. Gas sensing characteristics of TiO2:Cr nanosensors upon interaction with H2 have been recorded in the self - assembled experimental system. The detection of hydrogen was carried out over the concentration range of 50-3000 ppm at the temperatures extending from 200 to 400oC. It is demonstrated that nanomaterials based on TiO2:Cr are attractive for ultimate sensors applications due to a decrease in the operating temperature down to 210-250oC, accompanied by an increase in the sensor response. Taking into account the possible operating costs the best candidates for the commercial use are TiO2: 1 at. % Cr and TiO2: 5 at. % Cr nanosensors.
