The objective of this study is to determine and troubleshoot the problems of using handheld optical power meter and optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) for monitoring and troubleshooting a conventional passive optical network (PON) equipped with optical splitter/coupler that used to broadcast optical signals from one fiber to many fibers. This paper proposes an appreciate approach to overcome these testing challenges. In this enhancement, a commercially available OTDR is located at central office (CO) and a tapper circuit is designed to allow the OTDR testing signal to bypass the optical splitter/coupler in a conventional PON when emitted from CO towards customer sites for centralized monitoring in downstream direction. This provides a faster, simpler, and less complex way for installation testing, service activation testing, and network performance monitoring and in-service troubleshooting a PON.

A real-time optical network monitoring system named Smart Access Network _ Testing, Analyzing and Database (SANTAD) that combined remote controlling, centralized monitoring and troubleshooting, fault detection, optical switching as well as protection and restoration features is introduced for delivering high quality of services (QoS) for passive optical network (PON). The implementation of SANTAD in PON shows its contribution on obtains the high accuracy in detecting any occurrence of fault and addressing the failure location within 30 seconds. The main advantages of this work are to assists the network operators to manage the PON network system more efficiently, reduce hands on workload, minimize network downtime, and rapidly restore failed services when problems are detected and diagnosed.

The proliferations of terrorism news articles from thousands of different sources are now available on the Web. Summarization of such information is becoming increasingly important. The aim of this paper is to study and compare the linguistic feature methods that are appropriate for use in terrorism event extraction systems. The event extraction has a main function to named entity recognition and segments the terrorism events from news articles to display to the users. The research methodology in the paper compares many linguistic features techniques including the terrorism gazetteer, the terrorism ontology and terrorism grammar rule. The annotated entities are summarized into the three desired template events. The terrorism events are classified by using similarity measure based on Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency called TF-IDF-based event segmentation. Additionally, we use a finite state algorithm to learn these feature weights and also studied to emphasize the performance of the event extraction algorithms. The experimental results show that the terrorism ontology linguistic feature selection yielded the best performance with 85.15% for both precision and recall.

This paper describes hardware implementations of crypto protocol elements for secured data communication in two wired networks of security system detectors. Those elements are basic to crypto protocol development for that type of network. In addition, hardware tools for the network controller and the network server that support this protocol were developed. These tools will allow us to test and debug the proposed security elements and the crypto protocol.

The paper presents the concept of genetic algorithm based optimization for the EMG pattern recognition system controlling the hand prosthesis. The recognition of EMG signals for determining the hand movements is made by a linear neural network discriminating between five predefined grasps. The input feature vector for the classification was established using AR model, and its coefficients became the features. The genetic algorithms are used to optimize the number of elements in the input feature vector and simultaneously maintain the recognition efficiency at the same level. Experimental results show a good efficiency in the optimization method maintaining the performance of the recognition system for the studied grasp movements' repertoire.

A neuro fuzzy logic based adaptive power system stabilizer (AFPSS) has been developed using angular speed deviation and angular acceleration as the input variables. It consists of two main parts, namely, fuzzy logic controller (FLC) and generalized neuron (GN) based identifier. The inference mechanism of the fuzzy logic controller is represented by rule-base and a data-base. Three parameters have been introduced to tune the FPSS. These parameters are decided on the basis of GN-identifier output and present system conditions. This mechanism of tuning the AFPSS makes the fuzzy logic based power system stabilizer adaptive to changes with the operating conditions. Therefore, the degradation of the system response, under a wide range of operating conditions, is less compared to the system response with a fixed-parameter conventional power system stabilizer (CPSS). Performances of the CPSS and the AFPSS are compared for different operating conditions.

We demonstrate a fast miniature microelectro-mechanical-system-based near-infrared fluorescence dual-axis confocal microscope in a 10-mm-diameter package for 3-D imaging in both ex vivo and in vivo samples. The miniature microscope, while in contact with the targeted tissue, can reveal subsurface structure or anatomy as deep as 300 μm. The lateral and axial resolutions are 5 and 7 μm, respectively. Real-time en face mosaicing image of in vivo human skin is demonstrated to enlarge the overall FOV to be over 3 mm at acquisition frame rate of 5 frames/s. © 2009 IEEE.

This paper focused on developing a fully passive device prototype named passive in-line monitoring (PIM) device, which used to tap out a small ratio of triple-play signals for monitoring purpose without affecting the transmission in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) access network. This device will be installed with the main lines in FTTH permanently to allow the field engineers or technicians to simply connect it to a portable tester unit for transmission surveillance and failure detection. The PIM device is used to sharply determine the location of break point before repairing. A passive tapper circuit is required to obtain the optical signals to provide a visual way of monitoring the receiving signal performance. The entire optical components that had been used in the circuit design including connectors, splices, optical isolators, and optical couplers. This device is potentially to improve the service reliability and reduce the repairing cost and time.

Wine is a very famous beverage in the world. It is an alcoholic beverage made by fermentation of grape juice. The environmental conditions and the skills of winemaker are important factors that determine the quality of wine. Thailand has over the years developed and presented wine of high quality to global wine market. Because of sub-tropical climate of Thailand, winemakers have to understand the impact of environment conditions such as the micro-climate and soil conditions etc. Most of decisions made by the winemakers call on information from personal knowledge, field document and notebook entries. At present, precision agriculture (PA) has obviously become a fast growing field in advanced agriculture. It has been widely employed for management of modern farms, especially the vineyards. Several tools and technologies can help winemakers to make more informed decisions for managing vineyards, regarding selection of various agro-inputs, selection of time of various farming activities such as soil preparation, cultivation, irrigation management and harvesting etc. In this research, we developed a so-called ldquosmart vineyardrdquo system and investigated various types of sensors for vineyard monitoring. This system was successful tested in real vineyard (GranMonte vineyard, Khao Yai national park, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand) and is now ready for commercialization.
