The PC based virtual instrumentation is a dynamic and attractive alternative to the classic instrumentation. Its main advantages are: flexibility and adaptability, low cost, wide development of extension PC boards with measurements features, attractive representation of measurement results, in different forms, on the PC's monitor. The paper presents a system identification application with PC based (virtual) instrumentation. The virtual system is made of an external board, connected to the PC via the USB interface and a software tool, Agilent VEE (Visual engineering Environment). The presented virtual system can work as a voltmeter, ammeter, signal generator, digital oscilloscope and power supply. The main contribution of the paper is the extension of the application domain of the virtual instrumentation system to system identification. The identification method consists of applying to the system input a binary pseudorandom signal (BPRS) and determining the impulse response of the system as being well approximated by the cross-correlation function between the input signal and the answer of the system. The application is intended for educational purposes but can be used in other areas too

Interdigital-gated AlGaAs/GaAs high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) structure was used to investigate the interaction between the drifting carrier plasma waves and electromagnetic (EM) waves. It was shown theoretically that the interaction in the range from microwave to terahertz (THz) at room temperature should produce negative conductance characteristics when the carrier drift velocity slightly exceeds the phase velocity of EM waves. S-parameter reflection measurements were carried out at room temperature for a frequency range from 1 to 20 GHz and a drastic change in conductance was observed at 5GHz and 10GHz with the increase of drain-source voltage. Large conductance change over 1000 mS/mm was obtained and it showed a peak at a certain frequency. The peak position could be controlled by changing the pitch size of the interdigital gates. These characteristics can be used for high frequency applications such as high-speed switching devices although a feature size of our interdigital-gated HEMT device is much larger than conventional HEMT device

The data-driven decision support tool built around the SAS technology has been developed to support the evaluation and monitoring of the quality of educational process. The tool forms an integrated framework that can be used for managing of teaching and learning processes and for performing comparative studies in the participating institutions. The tool includes: the engine for the comparative statistical analysis of the quality of teaching, the mechanism for dissemination of analytical results and the reporting facility. The main aim of our study is to extract and to compare the information on the quality of courses and teaching obtained from the different sets of databases at the faculty of Electronic engineering (FEE) of the Wroclaw, University of technology (WUT), Poland; the faculty of computer Science (FCS) at University of Las Palmas de Grand Canaria (ULPGC), Spain; the faculty of engineering, Software, the Polytechnic University of Upper Austria in Hagenberg, Austria; the Electrical and computer Science Department at the University of Arizona in Tucson, USA and Software engineering Group at the faculty of engineering University of technology, Sydney (UTS), Australia. In this paper we describe the process involved, the methodology, the tools for the analysis; and we present the results of our study.

In many cases, an image is made of various types of texture. Such diversity can be usefully exploited to get a suitable decomposition of the image into typical classes and then, identify its constitutive elements. Among the approaches used to segment textured images, those based on the statistical analysis of the neighborhood of each pixel seem to be most efficient. In this paper, this kind of method is implemented, which consists in coding the pixels surrounding each point of the image by taking into account the path traveling through them and their grey levels. The rank vectors namely the codes obtained for all the possible paths, are then classified using the K-means algorithm. Considering the 24- rank vectors, this method is tested on different images of the Brodatz album and compared with Laws filters and GLCM. It yields a satisfactory reproduction of the image contours and a classification ratio exceeding 98 %. The 24 rank based-method is also applied to meteorological images collected by Meteosat over Europe and North Africa during December 1994. It is found that these images can be segmented into eight typical classes assignable to the soils, the seas and the clouds observed in the regions under study.

In this paper we present an observation of an additional layer over the Malaysian ionosphere using bottomside sounding. This F3 layer has been observed over Brazil by Balan et al. (1995). Other work done by Uemoto et al. (2004) from the observation of topside sounding obtained by the Ohzora satellite confirmed this work. In Malaysia, the layer has been observed at the newly established ionosonde station at Batu Pahat (lat. 1° 86′ N, long. 103° 8′ E). This station has been in operation since October 2004. Continuous sweep soundings are made every 15 minutes along with single frequency soundings. Greatest appearance of the F3-layer is around local noon while the least is after local dawn. The mean height for the layer is about 600 km reaching a maximum of about 900 km during the months of Nov, 2004 – Jan, 2005. This period is in agreement with the occurrence of F3 layer observed by Balan et al. work (December solstices). It is seen that the critical frequency of the F2 layer decreases with the appearance of the F3-layer. This phenomena can be attributed to the equatorial anomaly and the upward neutral wind and E x B drift.

This paper presents the link budget calculations for Free Space Optical (FSO) communication system under diverse weather conditions. It discusses various factors involved in the medium between the transmitter and receiver, which affect link budget calculations. For free space optical communication, atmospheric losses are the dominating factor in the link budget. These losses should be catered in such a way that sufficient power is available at the receiver to retrieve the information. It also describes the limitations of free space optical system under adverse weather conditions.

The ionosphere over Malaysia is unique because of her location near the equator where the existence of the equatorial anomaly, electrojet, and fountain effect have made it good for studies. As part of a rejuvenation process in investigating the equatorial ionosphere in Malaysia, a short duration ionospheric experimental campaign was carried out at Fraser's Hill (lat. 3° 42.9′ N, long. 101° 44.2′ E, at an altitude of 1298 m) from August 1 to 18, 2005. Two sets of equipment were installed; a digital ionosonde and a dual frequency GPS receiver. The ionosonde consists of the sounding equipment using a delta antenna for transmitting and a dipole antenna for receiving. The GPS dual frequency receiver that is co-located with the digisonde is utilized as an ionospheric scintillation and TEC monitor. Results are compared with the main observatory at Parit Raja (lat. 1 ° 86′ N, long. 103 ° 8′ E) Malaysia.
