A novel wire communication system which consists of low-power switched-mode DC-DC power converters is proposed in this paper. A converter acts as not only a power supply but also a transmitter. The main power unit in a conventional system can be removed and the system reliability is much increased, because converters construct a parallel-connected system with respect to DC power. Transmission of signals is performed by the use of output voltage ripple. At transmission, this ripple is increased intentionally and modulated. Both analog modulation and digital modulation are acceptable.

In this paper, we propose a method to detect a road sign from a road scene image in the daytime. In order to utilize the color feature of the sign efficiently, the color distribution of sign is examined, and then a color similarity map is constructed. Assuming that the color distribution is a normal distribution, a color similarity map is obtained. Additionally, the color similarity shown on the map is incorporated into an image function of an active net model. A road sign is extracted as if it is wrapped up in an active net. Some experimental results obtained by applying an active net to images are presented.

Capacitors are utilised in a variety of different ways in power electronic circuits. Typical applications are in snubber, clamping and resonant circuits. For design purposes, it is necessary to make an accurate measurement of the actual behaviour of the capacitance that is added to the circuit under conditions related to those prevailing in a converter. For this purpose, a number of different measurement systems or techniques can be utilised. Four of these measurement systems are compared. These are small signal, variable frequency measurement, large signal quasi-DC measurement, in-situ high voltage measurement and small signal with large bias voltage measurement. Each of these measurement techniques returns characteristic values based on its particular model of the test capacitor. These tests are done on both ceramic and nonceramic capacitors at room temperature. The results are discussed.

Integrated LCT (inductor-capacitor-transformer) technology has been the subject of intensive research over the last few years. Research into producing optimum design equations has been conducted. To determine some of the physical and technological limitations of the integrated LCT technology, a 1 kW, 1 MHz resonant DC-DC power converter was designed and built. The design was limited only by material, construction and physical restrictions. Through this process, it is hoped that some of the current technological limitations can be quantified. The design and construction process is given, while some of the limits of this technology are derived from experimental results.

A new neural network-based fault classification strategy for hard multiple faults in analog circuits is proposed. The magnitude of the harmonics of the Fourier components of the circuit response at different test nodes due to a sinusoidal input signal are first measured or simulated. A selection criterion for determining the best components that describe the circuit behaviour under fault-free (nominal) and fault situations is presented. An algorithm that estimates the overlap between different faults in the measurement space is also introduced. The learning vector quantization neural network is then effectively trained to classify circuit faults. Performance measures reveal very high classification accuracy in both training and testing stages. Two different examples, which demonstrate the proposed strategy, are described.

A detailed analysis is presented of our original overload-protected frequency-compensated current-feedback magnetic multivibrator. Current-feedback magnetic multivibrators are highly efficient and are suitable for high-frequency operation. However, these circuits have no ability to protect themselves from overloading, and the oscillation frequency varies according to the load current. We therefore proposed a new current-feedback multivibrator with overload protection and frequency compensation. In this paper, the condition for cessation of oscillation and that for fixed frequency of oscillation are derived by using our model of bipolar junction transistors. This model takes account of power dissipation, because the common-emitter static forward current transfer ratio and the junction voltage depend on the junction temperature.

A bias coding method is proposed for cellular neural networks which facilitates the representation of analog values into unipolar format. These bias-coded values are spatially arranged on the transparenciesusing a designed spatial coding scheme. A new compact and efficient optoelectronic architecture for cellular neural networks is also reported which is based on the proposed bias coding method and incoherent correlation.
