A flatness-based approach for motion planning for a class of boundary controlled port-Hamiltonian systems with distributed parameters is presented. The goal is to achieve open-loop output tracking or finite-time transitions between steady states or operating profiles. Introducing new (fictious) boundary conditions in terms of so-called flat outputs, the port-Hamiltonian system is reformulated as a Cauchy problem in the spatial domain. The parametrization of any system variable and input by the flat output is computed using two different solution approaches. By assigning a suitable desired trajectory for the flat output, the input parametrization yields the feed forward control law to solve the motion planning task. The presented theory is applied to the wave equation with spatially varying parameters and is evaluated by numerical calculations and simulations.

The parameter identification problem of cell population balance models in a yeast batch process is addressed. The model is described by a partial integro-differential equation coupled with a set of ordinary differential equations. Based on the solution equivalence of the mass balance model and the first moment of the cell population balance model, the identification process is carried out in two steps. The growth related parameters are identified by only taking mass balance based measurements into account. The growth parameters are then utilized to identify the parameters related to cell division in the cell population balance model by means of optimization. The results are verified with an R2 analysis.

Direct torque control (DTC) is considered as the best alternative for permanent magnet synchronous (PMSM) drives. Classic switching-table based DTC has high torque and flux ripple due to the implementation of hysteresis control. Switching frequency can be made constant by replacing hysteresis control with space vector PWM (SVM) and requires mathematical modification on SVM input. Propotional+integral control and reference flux vector calculation (RFVC) is used to improve the torque response, flux and torque ripple. These scheme still utilizing similar torque and flux estimator as introduced in classic DTC. Propotional+integral control DTC performed better in term of torque step response whilst RFVC torque and flux ripple are the best among these three schemes.
