Conceptual Thoughts on Biointelligent Embedded Systems and Operating Systems Architecture

Biointelligent systems are among the most important enablers for a sustainable transformation of industry. The convergence of bioware, hardware and software generates completely new system architectures that allow products to be manufactured and utilized more decentralized, autonomous, and demand-driven. With the increasing amount of (heterogeneous) production data required for this and the need for real-time capability, the importance of edge computing is growing. To fulfill the demand for edge computing, the requirement for intelligent high-end embedded systems, together with an operating system, for future production has grown. After a series of recent publications describing the basic principles of the necessary information technology networking of biological and technical systems, we introduce the concept of a biointelligent, embedded system, discuss its need for an operating system and place it in a larger system context. By comparing the use of embedded operating systems in digital product systems, necessities of an operating system in biointelligent systems are derived, e.g. managing resources, guaranteeing real-time processing, mastering complexity, ensuring usability and increasing security. Upon the evaluation of the fulfillment of existing embedded operating systems to these necessities, we derive white spots for future research.

In the process of remagnetization of magnetic materials at certain frequencies, there are losses that reduce their energy expenditure, which are referred to as total losses. These losses include hysteresis loop losses, eddy current losses, and additional losses. The factor of additional losses is very often overlooked. Its contribution to total losses is considered to be marginal. Even in the case of materials showing the minimization of total losses, such as amorphous materials, this loss factor is important and should not be neglected when studying this phenomenon. The paper presents the results of tests on remagnetization losses of a ferromagnetic amorphous alloy at frequencies from 50 to 1000 Hz. The share of additional losses was separated, and their total contribution to total core losses was determined as a percentage. © 2025 Polska Akademia Nauk. All rights reserved.

Aneurysms, balloon-like bulges in blood vessels, present a significant health risk due to their potential to rupture, leading to life-threatening internal bleeding. Current treatments often involve delivering embolic materials or metal coils to fill these bulges, occluding them from the pressure of blood flow. However, clinical micro-catheters that deploy embolic materials used today face limitations, primarily their rigidity and the lack of active control over the bending tip of the catheter. This paper introduces a new soft micro-robotics catheter, with diameter of only 0.8 mm, equipped with a hollow channel. With this new design, the new device can induce bending motions at its tip for active steerability to reach desired aneurysm targets and then perform the delivery of embolic materials and tools. To enhance the control and precise navigation during procedures, a robust mathematical model and image processing techniques are also introduced and validated. Experiments are also performed to characterise and validate the model’s accuracy and the steerability and navigation capabilities of the new micro-catheter.

Nowadays new information and communication technologies (IT) directly influence teaching methods, practices and resources. The use of virtual reality (VR) technology in education enables new approaches that can enhance, guide, and stimulate students' interest in learning while allowing them to experience the subject and acquire sensory and intuitive cognition in a more personal and realistic environment. This research aims to answer the question: can constructive spatial activity with real materials in real space be replaced by virtual space and digital tools in terms of assessing stability and knowledge acquisition? This current pilot study aims to examine the feasibility of our research setup and analysis methods while children are asked to perform an intuitive creative process to construct a structure in real and digital space. We involved twelve school-age (8,47 years average) from an elementary school, and we randomly allocated them to group 1 (real space construction) and to group 2 (tablet application construction). We created a behavioral coding scheme for the widely used and validated Noldus Observer XT (version 15) video behavior analyzer software. The video analyses showed that the creation phases defined in the construction process appeared on both real space and in a virtual setting, confirming the assumption that the acquisition of knowledge and skills related to stability can also be phased. Based on our pilot research on a small sample, the chosen observation and research methodology is feasible. We predict that the real-space constructive task applied in the measurement can be replaced by a digital interface to experience stability.

Mixed reality and digital twins offer two prominent technological approaches that have the potential to revolutionize chemical industries. However, there are some hurdles that need to be overcome before these technologies can be widely adopted. One major challenge can be found in cooperation of interdisciplinary teams. In order to create an effective practical solution, mixed reality researchers need to be aware of the heterogeneity of data, scale and requirements of the real-life scenes. Moreover, engineers in process industries need to understand the functional requirements of mixed reality solutions. To close this existing gap, this paper presents an exemplary use case model with market requirements and technological potentials, system interfaces, and role models to serve as a reference model for future trans-disciplinary research on this use case. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper investigates the role of coding in children's education and the barriers to inclusion for Visually Impaired (VI) children in this environment. In the learning process, these children face numerous challenges, including the fact that most playful coding-related learning options rely on visualization. This paper incorporates insights from a literature review to design a solution involving a model called DODO through computer vision and tangible paper blocky modules for VI children to learn to code. The main result is the proof of concept prototype demonstrates that the proposed design can recognize the various paper modules used to represent different codes, targeting the tactile sense. The design advocates for VI children to have access to economic Science, Technology, engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning.

High-voltage impulse converter is meant for a stability test of power converters to emergency states which occur at input overvoltage impulse. It is developed with the use of two switching units based at IGBT. The proposed converter forms an output overvoltage impulse with the required values both in amplitude and in duration of rise and fall. Analytical expressions which describe transient processes in the proposed electric circuit of the converter are determined. Computer simulation using MATLAB Simulink confirmed the accuracy of the analytical expressions obtained. A prototype sample of the proposed high-voltage impulse DC converter is developed. For example, the results of using the developed converter when testing the power converter of PSN235Y2 type are presented. The article is of interest for electrical engineering specialists who develop technological equipment for manufacture and testing the power converters both for railway transport and for industrial.

the regions of characteristics of narrow-band noise signals corresponding to a strong hidden correlation between these signals are correctly determined. The signals under consideration are as follows: the signal at center frequency and the sum of signals at specular frequencies simultaneously extracted from broadband bandwidth-limited noise dominated by shot noise. The characteristics being analyzed included specular frequency range and narrowband filter selectivity (narrowband noise spectral bands). Research method is based on the method to assess latent correlation of narrowband noise signals earlier developed by the authors. The research results presented can be of interest for scientists, engineers and metrologists engaged in digital signal processing who apply specular noise method for useful signal extraction from noise. © 2021 IEEE.

Motion artifacts compromise the quality of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and pose challenges to achieving diagnostic outcomes and image-guided therapies. In recent years, supervised deep learning approaches have emerged as successful solutions for motion artifact reduction (MAR). One disadvantage of these methods is their dependency on acquiring paired sets of motion artifact-corrupted (MA-corrupted) and motion artifact-free (MA-free) MR images for training purposes. Obtaining such image pairs is difficult and therefore limits the application of supervised training. In this paper, we propose a novel UNsupervised Abnormality Extraction Network (UNAEN) to alleviate this problem. Our network is capable of working with unpaired MA-corrupted and MA-free images. It converts the MA-corrupted images to MA-reduced images by extracting abnormalities from the MA-corrupted images using a proposed artifact extractor, which intercepts the residual artifact maps from the MA-corrupted MR images explicitly, and a reconstructor to restore the original input from the MA-reduced images. The performance of UNAEN was assessed by experimenting with various publicly available MRI datasets and comparing them with state-of-the-art methods. The quantitative evaluation demonstrates the superiority of UNAEN over alternative MAR methods and visually exhibits fewer residual artifacts. Our results substantiate the potential of UNAEN as a promising solution applicable in real-world clinical environments, with the capability to enhance diagnostic accuracy and facilitate image-guided therapies.
