Industrial IoT-based submetering solution for real-time energy monitoring

The Sustainable Monitoring & Advanced Real-Time Energy Efficiency (SMARTEE) project addresses the critical challenge of optimizing energy management in pharmaceutical manufacturing through an Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)-based submetering solution. This study presents the design and deployment of a tailored IoT system, integrating IoT-enabled submeters, a Mini-PC gateway, and cloud-based analytics for continuous, real-time energy consumption monitoring across critical equipment such as chillers, boilers, and HVAC systems. Following a systematic methodology, the project implemented advanced data acquisition and communication protocols, including Modbus over RS485, Node-RED for data processing, and MQTT for transmitting energy metrics to a cloud-based visualization platform. Results demonstrated the system’s efficacy in delivering actionable insights into energy patterns, significantly improving operational efficiency and waste reduction. The IoT-based solution is highly scalable, adaptable to various industrial contexts, and provides a secure platform for real-time monitoring. This work highlights the potential of IoT in transforming industrial energy management, with future research focusing on AI-driven predictive analytics and seamless integration with renewable energy systems to enhance sustainability and resilience further. © The Author(s) 2025.

In university systems, traditional methods of information retrieval are often found to be inefficient, leading to frustration among students and staff. This paper presents the development and evaluation of a university-specific chatbot that employs the Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) approach to improve the accuracy and relevance of its responses. Unlike conventional chatbots that depend on intent classification and pre-designed system responses and conversation flows, the proposed chatbot integrates Large Language Models (LLMs) with local university data, enhancing its ability to handle complex queries with context-aware responses and dynamically generated conversation flows. The system architecture includes components such as LangChain for orchestration, a vector store for embedding external knowledge, and a user interface developed using Streamlit. Evaluation results demonstrate that the RAG-based chatbot substantially outperforms traditional LLMs, including GPT-3.5, GPT-4 mini, and GPT-4, in terms of answer accuracy and reliability. In this paper we also reflect on the lessons learned during the chatbot’s development and deployment in a real-world university setting. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The "Interbank Fund Transfer Liability Management System"seeks to simplify interbank financial transfers, strengthen security, and lower risks. The implementation of infrastructure structural health monitoring for bridges is crucial in thoroughly evaluating their condition and maintaining their structural robustness. Recently, novel technologies have been introduced for both static and dynamic evaluation, opening up exceptional opportunities in the fields of risk management and structural assessment. Notably, microwave radar sensors have been effectively utilized for the continuous surveillance of dynamic and static displacements in bridges via aerial deformation measurement techniques. However, a primary challenge for microwave interferometry arises from its inherent linear measurement nature, making it challenging to precisely locate damage and derive accurate displacement time-series for bridges. Furthermore, it is worth noting that vertical displacements typically hold more significance than horizontal displacements in the dynamic monitoring of bridges. Regrettably, microwave radar interferometry can yield only the line-of-sight (LOS) displacement of a monitored bridge. In this study, our primary objective is the remote surveillance of dynamic displacement responses in bridges using a polarimetric radar system. To achieve this, we employ various methodologies to surmount the inherent limitations of this technique. Further, we discuss the results obtained from our monitoring of a long-span metallic railway bridge and a reinforced concrete Shinkansen bridge. The ultimate goal of this research is to generate more comprehensive and precise data for bridge health monitoring through the use of a polarimetric sensor. As part of our approach, we conducted a polarimetric analysis to detect reflections from the deck of the bridges. Furthermore, details relating to the polarization orientation angle and the local incidence angle were processed under the acquisition geometry to compute the radar look angle. Davies talks about spectroscopic data set. As originally delivered the spectrometer was capable of generating some of the best data sets people had ever been able to measure. Excellent signal-to-noise ratios and extremely stable calibrations. The associated computer hardware was somewhat behind the state-of-the-art, but this was quite normal due to the long development times for the instrument hardware. And so, in the hands of many expert, and some less expert, scientists, this wonderful spectrometer gave birth to many spectroscopic data sets--reinforcing theories and dispelling some myths. Over its lifespan serving as an excellent measurement platform allowing many modifications to the original basic equipment. So, while our data was young there were no problems. All the measurement parameters were stored with the data set so we could check the instrument had been set up correctly.

The fusion of visible light and infrared images has garnered significant attention in the field of imaging due to its pivotal role in various applications, including surveillance, remote sensing, and medical imaging. Therefore, this paper introduces a novel fusion framework using Res2Net architecture, capturing features across diverse receptive fields and scales for effective extraction of global and local features. Our methodology is structured into three fundamental components: the first part involves the Res2Net-based encoder, followed by the second part, which encompasses the fusion layer, and finally, the third part, which comprises the decoder. The encoder based on Res2Net is utilized for extracting multi-scale features from the input image. Simultaneously, with a single image as input, we introduce a pioneering training strategy tailored for a Res2Net-based encoder. We further enhance the fusion process with a novel strategy based on the attention model, ensuring precise reconstruction by the decoder for the fused image. Experimental results unequivocally showcase our method's unparalleled fusion performance, surpassing existing techniques, as evidenced by rigorous subjective and objective evaluations. © 2023 IEEE.

For an electric vehicle, the battery pack is energy storage, and it may be overheated due to its usage and other factors, such as surroundings. Cooling for the battery pack is needed to overcome this issue and one type is liquid cooling. It has numerous configurations of cooling line layouts and liquid coolants used where the most optimum configuration is preferable to optimize battery cooling, which can be utilized by numerous manufacturers to provide the best performing liquid cooled batteries. In this project, the analysis of the effect of liquid coolant and cooling line layout used was done using computational fluid dynamics to determine the optimum liquid coolant and cooling line layout by observing battery temperature, coolant temperature and coolant pressure. The result of this research project is the optimum cooling line layout has the greatest contact area of liquid coolant with the least layout complexity, and the optimum liquid coolant has the greatest thermal conductivity with the least viscosity and density. © 2022 IEEE.

Using a NEAT approach with curriculums for dynamic content generation in video games

This paper presents a novel exploration of the use of an evolving neural network approach to generate dynamic content for video games, specifically for a tower defence game. The objective is to employ the NeuroEvolution of Augmenting Topologies (NEAT) technique to train a NEAT neural network as a wave manager to generate enemy waves that challenge the player’s defences. The approach is extended to incorporate NEAT-generated curriculums for tower deployments to gradually increase the difficulty for the generated enemy waves, allowing the neural network to learn incrementally. The approach dynamically adapts to changes in the player’s skill level, providing a more personalised and engaging gaming experience. The quality of the machine-generated waves is evaluated through a blind A/B test with the Games Experience Questionnaire (GEQ), and results are compared with manually designed human waves. The study finds no discernible difference in the reported player experience between AI and human-designed waves. The approach can significantly reduce the time and resources required to design game content while maintaining the quality of the player experience. The approach has the potential to be applied to a range of video game genres and within the design and development process, providing a more personalised and engaging gaming experience for players. © The Author(s) 2024.

This paper explores the use of Hyper-Spectral Imaging utilising multiple visual bands in the Short Wave Infrared range to analyse fabrics and identify their composition materials. This paper proposes using classical computer vision and modern machine learning techniques, in order to classify the composition of fabric materials. Using unsupervised segmentation, data from high resolution images is reduced for a supervised classifier. Segmentation and classification is compared among eight different combinations of classical and machine-learning solutions. Segmentation is done using Felzenswalb and Kmeans methods, while classification uses the Minimum Spectral Distance, Spectral angle mapping, Principal component analysis with a support vector machine and a convolutional neural network. © 2023 IEEE.
