Fatigue tests under axial loading were conducted on steel with a shallow hardened layer induced by induction hardening, and in situ X-ray stress measurements were performed to investigate the relaxation of residual stresses during fatigue. The residual stresses were relaxed owing to tensile loading and not compressive loading. The two conditions that bring about this phenomenon are (i) a high peak of tensile residual stress just below the hardened layer, and (ii) the hardened layer coinciding with the compressive residual stress field that prevents the yielding of the compressive residual stress field under compressive loading. In this case, tensile yielding occurred just below the hardened layer under tensile loading, the residual stresses are redistributed, and the compressive residual stress on the material surface is relaxed. The experimental results also showed that the fatigue fracture morphology changed depending on the residual stress relaxation behavior. © 2025 The Iron and Steel Institute of Japan.

We performed machine learning using spectrum analysis and power spectra of electroencephalograms (EEGs) of patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Spectrum analysis was performed on the EEGs of MCI patients and healthy individuals, and the power spectrum values of the two groups were calculated and compared. Based on the power spectrum values of the theta and alpha bands, models for discriminating MCI patients were created using a support vector machine (SVM), and their accuracies were compared. In the spectrum analysis, the theta band showed significantly higher power spectrum values in the MCI group. In the comparison of the accuracies of SVM models, the model using the theta band showed higher values in parameters, such as accuracy rate. These results suggested that the power spectrum values of the theta band are useful for discriminating MCI patients. © 2024 IEEE.

Porosity calculation plays a vital role in evaluating the structural integrity and performance of wave-dissipating blocks used in coastal engineering. These blocks are structures that are designed to protect coasts, beaches, and so on from erosion by reducing the energy of ocean waves. As simulation scales and data complexities grow, traditional grid-based methods face significant computational challenges, particularly in real-time applications. This research introduces an octree-based method as a novel and efficient alternative to the grid-based approach. Leveraging the hierarchical spatial partitioning capabilities of octrees, this method adapts dynamically to varying block densities, significantly optimizing computational efficiency. By comparing the performance of grid-based and octree-based methods under diverse simulation conditions, this study provides actionable insights into selecting appropriate computational techniques for complex engineering simulations. The findings have broader implications for advancing computational efficiency in big data analytics, spatial data management, and environmental modelling, contributing to the scientific community's understanding of scalable and adaptable methodologies in engineering and beyond. © 2025 SPIE.

In this paper, we consider a scheduling issue for parcel delivery and pickup services by a truck-drone last-mile delivery system. We are given a single carrier truck and multiple identical drones to serve a finite set of customers. The single carrier truck plays the role of a mobile depot for the drones, and it visits several stops in a given order of them. The given order of stops constitutes a fixed truck route, and the carrier truck is allowed to launch (resp., to retrieve) a drone to (resp., from) a customer at a stop. For each sortie of a drone, the launching stop and the retrieving stop must be the same. The load capacity of a drone is limited to one, and for a sortie of a drone at a stop, there are three options: (i) only deliver a parcel to a customer, (ii) only pick up a parcel from a customer, and (iii) deliver a parcel to a customer, and then pick up a parcel from a customer. The scheduling problem asks to find an assignment of customers to drones with sortie options and a choice of a truck stop for each sortie in the assignment. The objective is to minimize the total duration of the carrier truck over all the stops, which is equivalent to minimizing the makespan. In this paper, we first propose an extended integer program for the case with both delivery and pickup services from an existing one for the case with delivery service only. We also conduct numerical experiments to demonstrate the solution quality of the proposed integer program by utilizing an integer programming solver, and report the results. © 2024 IEEE.

Given a directed edge-weighted graph G = (V, E) with beer vertices B ⊆ V , a beer path between two vertices u and v is a path between u and v that visits at least one beer vertex in B, and the beer distance between two vertices is the shortest length of beer paths. We consider indexing problems on beer paths, that is, a graph is given a priori, and we construct some data structures (called indexes) for the graph. Then later, we are given two vertices, and we find the beer distance or beer path between them using the data structure. For such a scheme, efficient algorithms using indexes for the beer distance and beer path queries have been proposed for outerplanar graphs and interval graphs. For example, Bacic et al. (2021) present indexes with size O(n) for outerplanar graphs and an algorithm using them that answers the beer distance between given two vertices in O(α(n)) time, where α(·) is the inverse Ackermann function;the performance is shown to be optimal. This paper proposes indexing data structures and algorithms for beer path queries on general graphs based on two types of graph decomposition: the tree decomposition and the triconnected component decomposition. We propose indexes with size O(m + nr2) based on the triconnected component decomposition, where r is the size of the largest triconnected component. For a given query u, v ∈ V , our algorithm using the indexes can output the beer distance in query time O(α(m)). A new acoustic analysis system based on MEMS microphones has been developed for assessing the internal quality of fruits. Although acoustic analysis is one of the effective techniques for assessing the internal qualities such as firmness, maturity, hollowness and sweetness of fruits, it has not been widely applied for fruits quality assessment in practice because the conventional apparatus was complexed and bulky to suppress the effects of surrounding noise and to maintain a good frequency response of the system. This study aimed to achieve both noise suppression and good frequency response with a simple system structure using an ultra-low-cost MEMS microphone. By placing the MEMS microphone inside a specially-designed fruit holder and optimizing its arrangement with a tapping module, the effect of ambient noise was significantly suppressed compared with the MEMS microphone alone, realizing a drastic simplification of the system. The simple correlation analysis of watermelon sweetness and the received acoustic frequency revealed a high correlation coefficient of –0.82. This result not only demonstrates a high potential of the proposed system in non-destructive internal quality assessment of fruits, and also strongly suggests the possibility of further study on acoustic analysis based on machine-learning with large-scale data collected effectively by using the developed system. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Conventional concrete significantly affects the environment due to high CO2 emission into the atmosphere during the production process. In order to improve concrete performance and arrest the incidence of global warming, the use of additive materials for cement replacement has been promoted worldwide. This study was designed to investigate the mechanical properties of high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete (HFRC) produced using rice husk ash (RHA) and hybrid fiber (HF) in accordance with the densified mixture design algorithm (DMDA) mix design method. Samples were produced using RHA as a direct replacement for cement at 10%, 20%, and 30%. HF, comprising steel and polypropylene fibers, was added (by volume) to the 20% RHA group mixture to improve the HFRC sample properties. Based on the experimental results, higher RHA contents had a generally negative effect on the fresh properties of the HFRC mixtures. Compressive strength values ranged from 53 to 72 MPa with various RHA and HF content. RHA replacement levels up to 20% had an insignificant effect on the strength development and dynamic modulus of the HFRC samples. However, the addition of HF improved splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, and dynamic modulus remarkably at all curing ages. Furthermore, the 91-day drying shrinkage was in the ranges of 0.032%–0.039% and 0.023%–0.034% using different RHA and HF levels, respectively. Increasing both RHA and HF contents significantly reduced drying shrinkage in the samples. Multivariable regression was also performed, clarifying that all tested results were consistent and had good correlations. The results of this study also provide a potentially effective use for abundantly available industrial waste products such as fly ash (FA) and RHA to promote the production of greener and more sustainable concrete. © IMechE 2023.

Rainwater, a valuable natural resource, can act as a carrier for various pollutants and ions. Conductivity is one of the leading indicators of water quality, reflecting the presence of dissolved substances acquired during its passage through the atmosphere. Currently, real-time measurement of rainwater quality based on the Internet of Things has been carried out at one measuring station, namely on the rooftop of the Gedung Kuliah Umum (GKU) Telkom University, Indonesia. However, real-time conductivity data has a relatively low level of accuracy when compared with daily laboratory test data. Conductivity data from real-time measurements during rain has two different conditions: when the water temperature is uncontrolled and controlled. Therefore, this research aims to increase accuracy and obtain the best general model in various conditions using machine learning. The methods used are Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Support Vector Regression (SVR), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoots). Next, each model result is evaluated for Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Relative Error (MRE), and Rsquared (R2). Based on the model evaluation results, the XGBoost model performs best in increasing accuracy. XGBoost Grid Search with RMSE results close to zero, a very high R2 of 0.99, and a relatively low MAE value of 3.5, which shows very accurate prediction capabilities. They were followed by SVR RBF Random Search, which also shows good performance with low RMSE and R2 of 0.23 and 0.78 and MAE value of less than 0.16. Meanwhile, ANN epoch 100 has comprehensive performance but still needs to improve prediction accuracy compared to the other two models. Therefore, XGBoost with Grid Search can be the primary choice for improving accuracy based on the evaluation results given. © 2024 IEEE.
