The necessity of replacing hazardous chemicals with natural compounds with similar activity is urgent, in different fields, from environmental protection to cultural heritage protection. In this respect, the aim of this paper is to demonstrate that natural compounds from two plants of the Lamiaceae family, namely mint and lavender, can be proposed as corrosion inhibitors for polymeric coatings for silver objects. The obtained results have demonstrated that the incorporation of the essential oils increases the corrosion protection, without affecting the properties of the base copolymeric materials. © 2024, Politechnica University of Bucharest. The research on Variational Quantum Algorithms (VQAs) has gained significant momentum because of their promising practicality in the noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) era. Recent studies highlight the potential of VQAs in reinforcement learning (RL) by replacing classical components with parameterized quantum circuits (PQCs). Building on this, we propose a quantum Q-learning model for the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP), combining a PQC with an RL training process. We present a PQC for embedding both static and dynamic states in RL environments. The proposed PQC approximates the Q-value function by using the expectation values of different observables. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed PQC outperforms the existing PQC for the CVRP with fewer quantum resources. Furthermore, our method shows competitive performance compared to the classical counterpart. © 2024 IEEE.

Kagome lattices have garnered significant attention due to their promising applications in catalysis,electronics,and *** many efforts have been paid to the design and synthesis of Kagome lattices,there is a limited focus on constructing this lattice by multiple interaction *** this work,we employ 2,7-dibromo-carbazole as precursors to successfully fabricate the two-dimensional self-assembly Kagome lattices stabled by multiple interaction forces on Au(111)*** low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy,non-contact atomic force microscopy and density functional theory calculation,we visualize and identify the four interaction forces within Kagome lattices:Au—N coordination bonds,Au—H hydrogen bonds,Br—Br halogen bonds,and Br—H hydrogen bonds,*** study provides a basic understanding for designing and constructing more complex Kagome lattices.

Fracture Properties and Strength Evaluation of Carbon Fiber under Tension-Torsion Loading

Recently, carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs) have been used as high-pressure container materials for fuel cell vehicles and other applications. When used as structural components, carbon fibers in a CFRP are subjected to multiaxial loading. As is well known, multiaxial strength and fracture behavior are significantly different from those under uniaxial loading. However, research on the multiaxial strength evaluation of carbon fibers is insufficient. To date, there have been a few reports on studies under tension-torsion loading, but these have hardly clarified the fracture criterion. In this study, the tensile-torsional fracture strengths of PAN-based carbon fibers were obtained by proportional loading tests. As a result, it was found that the tensile strength along the fiber axis decreased largely with increasing shear stress at the fiber surface under tension-torsion loading. The changes in the experimental results were well explained by adding a correction term to Tsai-Hill criterion, the theory for anisotropic materials. Furthermore, since PAN-based carbon fibers showed extreme differences in strength between uniaxial tension and pure torsion, it was finally concluded that the carbon fibers follow the maximum principal stress theory when using normalized stresses. ©2024 The Society of Materials science, Japan.

Fault-tolerance and self-organization are critical properties in modern distributed systems. Self-stabilization is a class of fault-tolerant distributed algorithms which has the ability to recover from any kind and any finite number of transient faults and topology changes. In this article, we propose a self-stabilizing distributed algorithm for the 1-MIS problem under the unfair central daemon assuming the distance-3 model. Here, in the distance-3 model, each process can refer to the values of local variables of processes within three hops. Intuitively speaking, the 1-MIS problem is a variant of the maximal independent set (MIS) problem with improved local optimizations. The time complexity (convergence time) of our algorithm is (Formula presented.) steps and the space complexity is (Formula presented.) bits, where (Formula presented.) is the number of processes. Finally, we extend the notion of 1-MIS to (Formula presented.) -MIS for each nonnegative integer (Formula presented.), and compare the set sizes of (Formula presented.) -MIS ((Formula presented.)) and the maximum independent set. © 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Container Pre-marshalling Problem Minimizing CV@R under Uncertainty of Ship Arrival Times

This paper is concerned with the container pre-marshalling problem, which involves relocating containers in the storage area so that they can be efficiently loaded onto ships without reshuffles. In reality, however, ship arrival times are affected by various external factors, which can cause the order of container retrieval to be different from the initial plan. To represent such uncertainty, we generate multiple scenarios from a multivariate probability distribution of ship arrival times. We derive a mixed-integer linear optimization model to find an optimal container layout such that the conditional value-at-risk is minimized for the number of misplaced containers responsible for reshuffles. Moreover, we devise an exact algorithm based on the cutting-plane method to handle large-scale problems. Numerical experiments using synthetic datasets demonstrate that our method can produce high-quality container layouts compared with the conventional robust optimization model. Additionally, our algorithm can speed up computations for solving large-scale problems. © 2025 Japan Industrial Management Association. All rights reserved.

This note shows two design examples of PID con-Trollers, whose state variables estimate the selected state vari-Ables of the controlled plant systems, for LTI Parametrically Dependent (LTIPD) systems. The authors have already proposed observer-structured controllers, whose structure is not the same as but is very similar to the well-established Luenberger observer-based controllers, and have also proposed a conversion method from a priori designed unstructured LTI or Linear Parameter-Varying (LPV) controllers to observer-structured LTI/LPV con-Trollers with the plant state estimation ability implemented. How-ever, the successful conversion has been reported only for full-order controllers. In this note, we show two examples, in which a priori designed LTI PID controllers are successfully converted to observer-structured PID controllers, and the designed observer-structured PID controllers well estimate the selected plant state variables in numerical simulations. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper, we study the task of generating financial news articles related to stock price fluctuations. Traditionally, reporters manually write these articles by identifying the causes behind significant stock price volatility. However, this process is time-consuming, limiting the number of articles produced. To address this, the study explores the use of generative AI to automatically generate such articles. The AI system, similar to human reporters, would analyze stock price volatility and determine the underlying factors contributing to these fluctuations. To support this approach, we introduces a Japanese dataset called JFinSR, which includes stock price fluctuation rankings from "Kabutan" and related financial information regarding factors of stock price rise / decline from "Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei)." Using this dataset, we implement the few-shot learning technique on large language models (LLMs) to enable automatic generation of high-quality articles from factors of stock price rise / decline that are available in Nikkei. In the evaluation, we compare zero-shot and few-shot learning approaches, where the few-shot learning achieved the higher F1 scores in terms of ROUGE-1/ROUGE-L metrics. © 2025 Association for Computational Linguistics.

In semiconductor processing to form surface shapes, photolithography and dry etching are used. In this case, the vacuum process requires improvements cost and productivity. We propose a sonic-Assisted processing method using the resonance phenomenon of stainless used steel plate diaphragms. This method is characterized by vibrating the diaphragm with sound pressure to vibrate the particles and microfabricate on Cu thin film [1][2]. To evaluate the sonic-Assisted processing method, we attempted to process Cu wafers by transmitting vibrations perpendicular to the wafer to a SUS plate diaphragm as a micro-shape transfer process using a micro-pattern pad. As a result, 100 μm length and 20 μm width grooves were formed on the Cu wafer surface. © 2024 IEEE.

Recent studies have explored the integration of large language models (LLMs) into caregiving robots. The use of LLMs facilitates the generation of human-like natural dialogues and diverse, varied expressions. However, in case of a lack of direct and specific instructions from a user, gaining an accurate understanding of the user's intent is challenging, which may result in miscommunication. Thus, this study proposed a method to achieve robust communication even in the absence of direct instructions by considering the uncertainty in destination prediction probabilities. The proposed system leveraged GPT-4 to generate various Japanese speech content candidates and employed neighborhood components analysis to facilitate dimensionality reduction. Consequently, notable features of the rich linguistic embeddings were preserved while transforming them into manageable data. The system selected appropriate utterances based on the destination prediction probabilities. Furthermore, this study investigated changes in the speech content according to the variations in these probabilities, and the incorporation of uncertainty in communication was validated. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
