Characterisation of synthesised trimetallic nanoparticles and its influence on anaerobic digestion of palm oil mill effluent

The augmentation of biogas production can be achieved by incorporating metallic nanoparticles as additives within anaerobic digestion. The objective of this current study is to examine the synthesis of Fe–Ni–Zn and Fe–Co–Zn trimetallic nanoparticles using the co-precipitation technique and assess its impact on anaerobic digestion using palm oil mill effluent (POME) as carbon source. The structural morphology and size of the synthesised trimetallic nanoparticles were analysed using a range of characterization techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The average size of Fe–Ni–Zn and Fe–Co–Zn were 19–25.5 nm and 19.1–30.5 nm respectively. Further, investigation focused on examining the diverse concentrations of trimetallic nanoparticles, ranging from 0 to 50 mgL−1. The biogas production increased by 55.55% and 60.11% with Fe–Ni–Zn and Fe–Co–Zn trimetallic nanoparticles at 40 mgL−1 and 20 mgL−1, respectively. Moreover, the lowest biogas of 11.11% and 38.11% were found with 10 mgL-1 of Fe–Ni–Zn and Fe–Co–Zn trimetallic nanoparticles. The findings of this study indicated that the trimetallic nanoparticles exhibited interactions with anaerobes, thereby enhancing the degradation process of palm oil mill effluent (POME) and biogas production. The study underscores the potential efficacy of trimetallic nanoparticles as a viable supplement for the promotion of sustainable biogas generation. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

CLIGEN is a stochastic weather generator that creates statistically representative timeseries of daily and sub-daily point-scale weather variables from observed monthly statistics and other parameters. CLIGEN precipitation timeseries are used as climate input for various risk-assessment modelling applications as an alternative to observe long-term, high temporal resolution records. Here, we queried gridded global climate datasets (TerraClimate, ERA5, GPM-IMERG, and GLDAS) to estimate various 20-year climate statistics and obtain complete CLIGEN input parameter sets with coverage of the African and South American continents at 0.25 arc degree resolution. The estimation of CLIGEN precipitation parameters was informed by a ground-based dataset of >10,000 locations worldwide. The ground observations provided target values to fit regression models that downscale CLIGEN precipitation input parameters. Aside from precipitation parameters, CLIGEN’s parameters for temperature, solar radiation, etc. were in most cases directly calculated according to the original global datasets. Cross-validation for estimated precipitation parameters quantified errors that resulted from applying the estimation approach in a predictive fashion. Based on all training data, the RMSE was 2.23 mm for the estimated monthly average single-event accumulation and 4.70 mm/hr for monthly maximum 30-min intensity. This dataset facilitates exploration of hydrological and soil erosional hypotheses across Africa and South America.

An energy hub is a unit that receives various energy carriers such as electricity and natural gas at its input and, after converting or storing energy, offers different energies at its output such as electricity, heating, and cooling. One of the most cost-effective solutions for utilizing the electricity and gas industry infrastructure is to consider both of them as an integrated system, such as an energy hub in the planning and operation of energy systems. This paper studied the home energy hub model, including a combined heat and power (CHP) system and a grid-connected electric vehicle (PHEV). The operation of the energy hub is considered a linear optimization problem mixed with integers (MILP);Therefore, the goal is to minimize the co-payment cost of a residential house that uses the WOA optimization algorithm. Solving this optimization problem includes the amount of energy carriers entering the hub, the energy converted to CHP, and the charge and discharge of PHEV. © 2022 IEEE.

Indoor comfort perception correlation to sick building syndrome in student residentials

The sick building syndrome phenomenon has been an issue among the various building types, including student dormitories. As the pandemic happens vast, the occupant’s health becomes a crucial issue in the student dormitory. The research approaches to understand the contribution of indoor environment quality to occupant’s health. The researcher uses a quantitative strategy, collects the data by questionnaires, and analyzes it by SPSS. The questions determine indoor comfort perception and sick building syndrome indication. There is a strong relation between indoor comfort perception in both bedroom and public room to the SBS index. On the other side, visual perception is not remarkably related to the SBS index, while other indoor comfort perceptions show meaningful influence on the SBS index. The bedroom comfort perceptions are more influential on the SBS index than public indoor comfort perception. In summary, indoor comfort perceptions play an important role in determining occupant’s health.

Inertial interaction effects analysis on the estimating of dynamic amplification factor for reinforced concrete structures

This work shows the importance of the need for revision of the Algerian seismic regulations RPA 2003 in terms of the dynamic amplification factor for R/C Rigid buildings with period 0.3 < T < 0.35 in stiff site. In most national building codes, formulas for estimating the seismic base shear include many factors such as the dynamic amplification factor D presented in the Algerian and Moroccan seismic codes RPA2003 and RPS2000 respectively, the response coefficient of the building B for the Iranian code ICS1999, and the spectral acceleration amplification factor B₀ for the Eurocode 8. To determine this factor, it is necessary to estimate the value of the vibration period of building based on empirical formulas that do not consider the inertial effects. Diagrams representing the variations of this factor show that the latter remains constant over a range from 0 to 0.7 s for the Algerian code corresponding to structures with 1 to 7 levels;0 to 1 s for the Moroccan, Iranian and Eurocode 8 corresponding to structures with 1 to 10 levels. No difference was noted in the dynamic factor as a result of degradation of the soil bearing capacity in this ranges. The purpose of this paper revolves around two main themes: the effects of Soil Foundation Structures Interaction (SFSI) on the estimation of dynamic amplification factor on the equivalent static analysis, and the elaboration of a new factor D_SAF^* called “dynamic site amplification factor” which takes into consideration the SFSI effects, the classifications of the seismic zones and the importance of the structures with application of the Algerian seismic code RPA2003. These values are presented in their simple and easy way to the different users. The results show the importance of these safety coefficients, recommended in the seismic regulations under the effect of SFSI, when the RPA2003 placed in the non-conservative side for the structures belongs to the ranges 0 to 0.7 s. © 2020, Springer

Polyurethane (PU) is an ideal thermal insulation material due to its excellent thermal properties. The incorporation of Phase Change Materials (PCMs) capsules into Polyurethane (PU) has been shown to be effective in building envelopes. This design can significantly increase the stability of the indoor thermal environment and reduce the fluctuation of indoor air temperature. We develop a multiscale model of a PU-PCM foam composite and study the thermal conductivity of this material. Later, the design of materials can be optimized by obtaining thermal conductivity. We conduct a case study based on the performance of this optimized material to fully consider the thermal comfort of the occupants of a building envelope with the application of PU-PCMs composites in a single room. At the same time, we also predict the energy consumption of this case. All the outcomes show that this design is promising, enabling the passive design of building energy and significantly improving occupants' comfort. © Healthy Buildings Europe 2023. Multi-task learning has proven to be effective in improving the performance of correlated tasks. Most of the existing methods use a backbone to extract initial features with independent branches for each task, and the exchange of information between the branches usually occurs through the concatenation or sum of the feature maps of the branches. However, this type of information exchange does not directly consider the local characteristics of the image nor the level of importance or correlation between the tasks. In this paper, we propose a semantic segmentation method, MTLSegFormer, which combines multi-task learning and attention mechanisms. After the backbone feature extraction, two feature maps are learned for each task. The first map is proposed to learn features related to its task, while the second map is obtained by applying learned visual attention to locally re-weigh the feature maps of the other tasks. In this way, weights are assigned to local regions of the image of other tasks that have greater importance for the specific task. Finally, the two maps are combined and used to solve a task. We tested the performance in two challenging problems with correlated tasks and observed a significant improvement in accuracy, mainly in tasks with high dependence on the others.

This research aimed to develop a prototype of sustainable housing for the Latin American and Caribbean region, specifically for Pucallpa City, which is located in the Peruvian Jungle. A structural design Truss and Column was proposed, made up of Capirona wood as the main construction material, while for the covering of the walls housing, the construction of modular panels was carried out using low carbon footprint materials, such as Bamboo. Besides, the design of an Artificial Wetland was presented to optimize the use of natural resources such as treated water. Finally, the energetic feasibility of an On-Grid Photovoltaic system was evaluated using the PVsyst software. The main results of the structural design showed that the elements such as beam, joist, and column do not exceed what is admissible, complying with Peruvian Technical Standard E010. The Artificial Wetland achieved removal efficiencies of 96.27% turbidity and 98.6% Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD). The Photovoltaic system showed a performance ratio of 0.767, with low losses by temperature (11.29%) and ohmic wiring (1.15%), achieving to avoid the emission of 16.1 tons of carbon dioxide in a lifetime of 30 years. Through this project, we are modeling the constructive customs of the jungle residents and providing an innovative solution for sustainable housing with energy and water efficiency for dense and urban areas of the Peruvian Amazon. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd.

Integration of knowledge-based documentation methodologies and digital information for the study of religious complex heritage sites in the south of Portugal

The progressive abandonment of religious houses, culminating with the Portuguese definitive dissolution of the religious orders in 1834, led to the alteration, abandonment or ruin of 131 religious complex heritage sites in the south of Portugal. This article defines a framework for their analysis, combining methodologies from different fields to obtain a more comprehensive understanding. After the settlement's identification, the literature review, the archival research, a census and morphological analysis of the existing physical structures has been carried out. The multidisciplinary framework is tested on a specific case study, including the production of 3D digital documentation and can be applied to the 131 convents. Findings can promote an increased awareness by nearby communities and public administrations, and encourage initiatives of heritage conservation, valorisation, and rehabilitation. Simultaneously, the study contributes to recognition of the importance of cultural heritage related to the analysed religious heritage sites, at local, regional and national levels. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd
