Polyurethane (PU) is an ideal thermal insulation material due to its excellent thermal properties. The incorporation of Phase Change Materials (PCMs) capsules into Polyurethane (PU) has been shown to be effective in building envelopes. This design can significantly increase the stability of the indoor thermal environment and reduce the fluctuation of indoor air temperature. We develop a multiscale model of a PU-PCM foam composite and study the thermal conductivity of this material. Later, the design of materials can be optimized by obtaining thermal conductivity. We conduct a case study based on the performance of this optimized material to fully consider the thermal comfort of the occupants of a building envelope with the application of PU-PCMs composites in a single room. At the same time, we also predict the energy consumption of this case. All the outcomes show that this design is promising, enabling the passive design of building energy and significantly improving occupants' comfort. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The aim of this paper is to propose new expressions for fundamental period of reinforced concrete buildings which take into account soil foundation and structure interaction SFSI effects and its variation of 215 existing buildings located in the USA, Europe and Asia. Diagrams represent empirical relationship between fundamental period-height in most recent research and building codes. No difference was observed in the value of period T as a result of degradation of the soil bearing capacity in these ranges. It is incorrect to present a single equation or a single diagram for different geotechnical conditions. To evaluate SFSI effects, a simplified SFSI modal is described in this work, using on Van nuys building-VN7SH and results are compared with those obtained by different authors. In order to develop simplified equations for estimating fundamental periods of vibration for 03 geomorphological sites, 40 existing buildings recorded over a period of 24 years located in the site of California are utilized, that encompass a wide range of structural and geotechnical conditions. On the other hand,175 more buildings used from Europe and Asia exposed to earthquake actions were examined to evaluate the accuracy of the relationship. A collective examination of the empirical, measured and procedures show that the fundamental period is fonction of to the building overall height H estimated on empirical formulas provided by earthquake design codes used for buildings under SFSI conditions effects under certain circumstances, underestimate the real response of the structures. The results reveal the effects of SFSI due to an earthquake recorded motion on the response of buildings depends mainly on the soil mass amplification, as well as secondary influences from type, shape and inertia of foundation. © 2020, CC BY.

Multi-task learning has proven to be effective in improving the performance of correlated tasks. Most of the existing methods use a backbone to extract initial features with independent branches for each task, and the exchange of information between the branches usually occurs through the concatenation or sum of the feature maps of the branches. However, this type of information exchange does not directly consider the local characteristics of the image nor the level of importance or correlation between the tasks. In this paper, we propose a semantic segmentation method, MTLSegFormer, which combines multi-task learning and attention mechanisms. After the backbone feature extraction, two feature maps are learned for each task. The first map is proposed to learn features related to its task, while the second map is obtained by applying learned visual attention to locally re-weigh the feature maps of the other tasks. In this way, weights are assigned to local regions of the image of other tasks that have greater importance for the specific task. Finally, the two maps are combined and used to solve a task. We tested the performance in two challenging problems with correlated tasks and observed a significant improvement in accuracy, mainly in tasks with high dependence on the others. Metallic nanoparticles (NPs) are of particular interest as antimicrobial agents in water and wastewater treatment due to their broad suppressive range against bacteria, viruses, and fungi commonly found in these environments. This review explores the potential of different types of metallic NPs, including zinc oxide, gold, copper oxide, and titanium oxide, for use as effective antimicrobial agents in water and wastewater treatment. This is due to the fact that metallic NPs possess a broad suppressive range against bacteria, viruses, as well as fungus. In addition to that, NPs are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to antibiotics for treating bacterial infections. Despite the fact that most research has been focused on silver NPs because of the antibacterial qualities that are known to be associated with them, curiosity about other metallic NPs as potential antimicrobial agents has been growing. Zinc oxide, gold, copper oxide, and titanium oxide NPs are included in this category since it has been demonstrated that these elements have antibacterial properties. Inducing oxidative stress, damage to the cellular membranes, and breakdowns throughout the protein and DNA chains are some of the ways that metallic NPs can have an influence on microbial cells. The purpose of this review was to engage in an in-depth conversation about the current state of the art regarding the utilization of the most important categories of metallic NPs that are used as antimicrobial agents. Several approaches for the synthesis of metal-based NPs were reviewed, including physical and chemical methods as well as "green synthesis" approaches, which are synthesis procedures that do not involve the employment of any chemical agents. Moreover, additional pharmacokinetics, physicochemical properties, and the toxicological hazard associated with the application of silver NPs as antimicrobial agents were discussed. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

The role of Co and Ag codoping on the electric, optical, and sensing performance of tin dioxide nano particles was investigated. Co-Ag codoping reduced particle size from 51.8 nm to 41.6 nm and the unit cell dimensions changed. Overall, Co and Ag resulted in significant rise in oxygen vacancy of SnO2 so that defects compensate unbalanced electron charge induced by dopants. It was also figured out that Co-Ag codoping improved the conductivity of SnO2 at low and high temperatures. Doping Led to decrement in the band gap energy of SnO2 from 3.66 eV to 3.07 eV, which shows improved optical properties of the compound. Study on photodegradation activity of SnO2 showed up to 97. % enhancement due to Co-Ag co-doping. Finally, the sensor response of the compound revealed that the response intensity of tin dioxide increased significantly when 4 wt.% Co and 2 wt. % Ag are doped into it. © 2023, The Authors. Indoor environments tend to be more complex and more populated when buildings are accessible to the public. The need for knowing where people are, how they can get somewhere or how to reach them in these buildings is thus equally increasing. In this research point clouds are used, obtained by dynamic laser scanning of a building, since we cannot rely on architectural drawings for maps and paths, which can be outdated. The presented method focuses on the creation of an indoor navigation graph, based on IndoorGML structure, in a fast and automated way, while retaining the type of walkable surface. In this paper the focus has been on door detection, because doors are essential elements in an indoor environment, seeing that they connect spaces and are a logical step in a route. This paper describes a way to detect doors using 3D Medial Axis Transform (MAT) combined with the intelligence stored in the path of a mobile laser scanner, showing good first results. Additionally different spaces (e.g. rooms and corridors) in the building are identified and slopes and stairs in walkable spaces are detected. This results in a navigation graph which can be stored in an IndoorGML structure. © Authors 2019.

Urban forests are crucial for the population well-being and improvement of the quality of life. For example, they contribute to the rain damping and to the improvement of the local climate. Therefore a correct and accurate mapping of this resource is fundamental for its correct management. We investigated a method that combines machine learning and SLIC superpixel techniques using different Superpixels (k) number to map trees in the metropolitan region of the municipality of Campo Grande-MS, Brazil with aerial orthoimages with GSD (Ground Sample Distance) of 10 cm. The combination of superpixels and machine learning algorithms were checked out with a set of weka classifiers and achieved good results i.e. F-1 %98.2, MCC %88.4 and Accuracy of %96.8, supporting that this method is efficient when used for urban trees mapping. © 2020 International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. The use of masonry infill walls in RC structures is a common solution in Portugal for more than 50 years. These walls are used to build the envelope of the buildings and as interior partitions. Since these walls are built only after the hardening of the RC elements, they are assumed as non-structural elements, and not considered in the structural design. However, when buildings are subjected to seismic action, these walls assume a structural behavior. This leads in many cases to the existence of an unsatisfactory behavior of infill walls, resulting in damage of the walls, which put human lives in danger and cause extensive economic losses. This seismic vulnerability of masonry infill walls is well recognized by the scientific community and has been observed in the recent earthquakes in southern Europe. In the case of a seismic event of high intensity in Portugal, it is expected that similar problems will occur in the Portuguese masonry infill walls, given the similarity of the construction typologies, in southern Europe. It is therefore important to study the masonry infill walls used in Portugal over the years, to fully understand their seismic behavior, and thus be able to propose and study new masonry infill systems for new construction. Thus, in this paper is made a characterization of Portuguese masonry infill walls in terms of evolution over the years. After being presented the problems that arise from the seismic vulnerability of these walls. In an attempt to solve some of these problems is presented in this paper a new system of masonry infill walls, to be used in new construction, with the objective of present a better seismic behavior. Experimental validation of the system is performed, using the in-plane and out-of-plane tests performed at the University of Minho. At the end of the paper, a comparison is made between the new system and the traditional cavity walls, to assess the improvement of the seismic behavior in relation to the traditional solutions.

Knowing the spatial distribution of endangered tree species in a forest ecosystem or forest remnants is a valuable information to support environmental conservation practices. The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) offers a suitable alternative for this task, providing very high-resolution images at low costs. In parallel, recent advances in the computer vision field have led to the development of effective deep learning techniques for end-to-end semantic image segmentation. In this scenario, the DeepLabv3+ is well established as the state-of-the-art deep learning method for semantic segmentation tasks. The present paper proposes and assesses the use of DeepLabv3+ for mapping the threatened Dipteryx alata Vogel tree, popularly also known as cumbaru. We also compare two backbone networks for feature extraction in the DeepLabv3+ architecture: the Xception and MobileNetv2. Experiments carried out on a dataset consisting of 225 UAV/RGB images of an urban area in Midwest Brazil demonstrated that DeepLabv3+ was able to achieve in mean overall accuracy and Fl-score above 90%, and IoU above 80%. The experimental analysis also pointed out that the MobileNetv2 backbone overcame its counterpart by a wide margin due to its comparatively simpler architecture in view of the available training data.

Ensuring the seismic resilience of segmental tunnels is essential for safeguarding urban transportation systems, especially in earthquake-prone areas where structural integrity is critical. Conventional seismic analysis methods typically rely on simplified models, utilizing homogeneous beam or shell elements with equivalent stiffness properties to approximate tunnel behavior under seismic loading. To overcome these limitations, this study presents an advanced, high-fidelity numerical model tailored for segmental tunnels, incorporating material and geometric nonlinearities while maintaining computational efficiency. The proposed model uses fiber beam elements to precisely represent the reinforced concrete segments. In contrast, zero-length section elements simulate the intricate interactions between tunnel joints, bolts, gaskets, and concrete surfaces. The model's accuracy is rigorously validated through experimental data from three distinct loading scenarios, confirming its capability to reliably predict the seismic response of segmental tunnels. Beyond experimental validation, a comprehensive sensitivity analysis is performed to examine the influence of different segment assembly configurations on the seismic behavior of tunnels. The findings indicate that the arrangement and mechanical properties of the segments significantly affect the overall structural performance, highlighting the necessity of precise modeling techniques. The proposed model is a valuable tool for enhancing the seismic design of underground transportation networks by offering a more detailed and accurate representation of segmental tunnel behavior.
