A wireless body area network is a radio-frequency-based wireless networking technology that interconnects tiny nodes with sensor or actuator capabilities in, on, or around a human body. WBANs provide promising applications in medical monitoring systems to measure specified physiological data and also provide location-based information, if required. This paper we propose the preliminary investigation of the application of error control code to MAC layer data. Convolutional codes and punctured codes have been considered. The punctured codes are used to step up the code rate from its mother code rate. In our investigation, ECG data from MIT-BIH Arrhythmia databases are chosen as input data. The coding performance comparison is selected to various parameters such as constrain length and code rate. The result will be a compromise between errors correcting capability and needed to reduce the number of data bits in the channel. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper presents the study of effect of equivalent series resistance in buck-boost converter using system identification technique with a consideration of dynamic condition. By varying the input signal of the system, the output dynamic response can be achieved. The output is then analyzed and compared by using both software simulation and hardware experiment. Finally, the analyzed result is then used for identifying the transfer function of the converter. Furthermore, the effects of variation of equivalent series resistance (ESR) in capacitors to the performance of converter are studied. As seen in the results, the increase of equivalent series resistance will decrease the percentage of overshoot and rise time of entire response.

This paper describes the design and realization of a low-noise, low-voltage, low-power CMOS logarithmic amplifier for bio-signal and neural recording applications. The proposed logarithmic amplifier is based on the progressive-compression parallel-summation architecture with DC offset cancellation feedback loop. A new fully differential limiting amplifier with bulk-driven current mirror active load is proposed to achieve larger voltage gain and low voltage operation. The proposed logarithmic amplifier was designed and simulated with process parameters from a standard 0.18-μm CMOS technology. The circuit operates with a single 0.7-V power supply voltage and dissipates 2.86 μW. The simulated input dynamic range is about 60 dB, which covers the input amplitudes ranging from 10 μV to 10 mV. The simulated -3-dB bandwidth of the amplifier is from 0.32 Hz to 22 kHz. The simulated total input-referred noise, integrated from 0.1 Hz to 10 kHz, is 4.41 μV.

Nowadays, Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) has become an interesting area of researchers since it can facilitate medical experts to provide a real-time health monitoring. The increasing of elder population is the main driven factor in implementing the medical intelligent services. Application of intelligent medical care system in the disaster environment is also not even less important. In such a vital application system as well as other large bandwidth requirement system, such as a cardiogram and heartbeat monitoring, the communication needs not only the reliability but also the realtime action. Considering the physical layer of IEEE 802.15.6 standard, Ultra Wideband offers an advantage in term of bandwidth availability. In this paper we propose the preliminary investigation of the application of error control code to MAC layer data. Of its both random and burst error correction capability, Reed-Solomon codes have been considered. In our investigation, several MIT-BIH Arrhythmia databases are chosen as input data. The coding scheme is applied to the 250 byte payload data. RS(250, k) which is the shorten version of RS(255, k) defined in GF(256) with variable code rate are investigated. AWGN channel and fading channels are employed to examine code's performance.

In LDPC code design, the structure of code's parity check matrix can be very crucial to code performance. In this paper, we have investigated a simple designed parity check matrix when the code is applied to a PMR channel of a storage system. Belief propagation algorithm and min-sum algorithm are two major decoding algorithms used to benchmarked the code's merits. Additive white Gaussian noise channel (AWGN) and perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) channel with SISO equalizer in PR2 target are the conditions of our investigation. The LDPC code itself is a modified array type. Its construction fairly simple compared to normal array and quasi-cyclic code. We used two decision variables to define the permutation matrix. A method proposed by Tanner's *** had been adapted to the modified array code. The decoders have been tested for 5 and 20. iterations. SNR versus BER and BLER were measured.

This paper describes the design and realization of a process and temperature compensated CMOS ring oscillator. The proposed circuit employs a current-starved ring oscillator with a compensated bias circuit, which generates an adaptive control voltage to maintain a fixed oscillation frequency against temperature and process variations. Simulation results using process parameters from a 0.18-μm CMOS technology and 1.8-V power supply voltage showed that the worst-case frequency variation of 4.49% and 2.29% could be obtained at the oscillation frequencies of 100 MHz and 150 MHz, respectively, over the temperature range of - 40°C to 125°C. The overall circuit consumes 437μW at 100MHz and 537μW at 150MHz. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper the numerical method based on Monte Carlo techniques is utilized for the analysis of the flying height measurement uncertainty. In the current flying height tester, the prediction of error is the main concern in order to assure the attainable precision. In previous study, a simplified analytical method is normally used and it may not provide the accurate results of the error prediction especially when the amount of the flying height values becoming as low as sub-5 nm. In this paper, instead of using the analytical method for error analysis, the numerical method based on Monte-Carlo techniques is utilized. Our simulation results show that the measurement uncertainty is mainly from the variation in the optical constants of the DLC layer. They also show that the increasing of standard deviation of the optical constants of DLC layer causes the higher measurement uncertainty.

This paper describes the design and implementation of a low-power wide dynamic range radio-frequency (RF) power detector in a standard 0.18-μm CMOS process. The proposed circuit includes a root-mean-square (RMS) power detector and a logarithmic amplifier. The RMS power detector exploits the nonlinear characteristic of MOSFET to realize the RMS conversion. A current-mirror active load is used in the RMS power detector to increase the RMS conversion gain. Since the output of the RMS power detector is a DC voltage, the following logarithmic amplifier does not require wide operating bandwidth, thus allowing simple circuit realization with minimum power dissipation. Simple differential amplifier is used to realize the limiting gain stage. Post-layout simulation results showed that the proposed circuit was able to detect input power from -70 dBm to -20 dBm with signal frequencies ranging from 0.5 GHz to 5 GHz, while dissipating only 0.9 mW under a 1.8-V power supply voltage.

One important part of a read/write head in hard disk drive is Air Bearing Surface (ABS), therefore its verifying is necessary. Main problem of verifying ABS with machine vision in manufacturing process is variance of luminance intensity that affects image acquisition. This research proposes method for reduce variance of luminance intensity by Texture unit, then extracting the features of ABS with Principle Component Analysis, and selected threshold for clustering defected and non-defected ABS by mean of threshold set which has minimum summation of two types error as false rejection and false acceptance from training data. The experimental results show that without Texture unit, defected and non-defected ABS cannot be clustered. Thus proposed method is better used because it can be reduce variance of luminance intensity.
