Solving dynamic optimization problems using parent–child multi-swarm clustered memory (PCSCM) algorithm

The Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm faces several inherent challenges when applied to dynamic and large-scale optimization problems. These challenges encompass the issues of outdated particle memory, inadequate scalability in high-dimensional search spaces, the incapability to detect environmental changes, a continual trade-off between exploration and exploitation, and the potential loss of population diversity within the problem space. To address these challenges, we propose a novel hybrid PSO algorithm, denoted as Parent–Child Multi-Swarm Clustered Memory (PCSCM). PCSCM is explicitly designed to leverage an enhanced memory system, capable of mitigating the issue of outdated particle memory after convergence, and efficiently adapting to changing environmental conditions. This innovative memory system retains and retrieves promising solutions from the past when environmental alterations occur. Additionally, PCSCM introduces clustering mechanisms for particles within each swarm, aimed at augmenting diversity within the problem space. This clustering strategy substantially bolsters the algorithm’s performance in tracking evolving optimal solutions and positively contributes to its scalability. Crucially, the clustering approach is implemented not only for the main population but also for stored solutions in memory, which collectively strike a balance between exploration and exploitation. In the proposed method, particle swarms are divided into parent and child swarms, with parent swarms dedicated to preserving diversity;while, child swarms focus on identifying local solutions. These clustering and memory strategies are consistently applied within each sub-swarm to effectively address the challenges posed by high-dimensional search spaces. In 2023,pivotal advancements in artificial intelligence(AI)have significantly *** that in mind,traditional methodologies,notably the p-y approach,have struggled to accurately model the complex,nonlinear soil-structure interactions of laterally loaded large-diameter drilled *** study undertakes a rigorous evaluation of machine learning(ML)and deep learning(DL)techniques,offering a comprehensive review of their application in addressing this geotechnical challenge.A thorough review and comparative analysis have been carried out to investigate various AI models such as artificial neural networks(ANNs),relevance vector machines(RVMs),and least squares support vector machines(LSSVMs).It was found that despite ML approaches outperforming classic methods in predicting the lateral behavior of piles,their‘black box'nature and reliance only on a data-driven approach made their results showcase statistical robustness rather than clear geotechnical insights,a fact underscored by the mathematical equations derived from these ***,the research identified a gap in the availability of drilled shaft datasets,limiting the extendibility of current findings to large-diameter *** extensive dataset,compiled from a series of lateral loading tests on free-head drilled shaft with varying properties and geometries,was introduced to bridge this *** paper concluded with a direction for future research,proposes the integration of physics-informed neural networks(PINNs),combining data-driven models with fundamental geotechnical principles to improve both the interpretability and predictive accuracy of AI applications in geotechnical engineering,marking a novel contribution to the field.

Utilization of genetic algorithm in tuning the hyper-parameters of hybrid NN-based side-slip angle estimators

This paper proposes a solution to enhance and compare different neural network (NN)-based side-slip angle estimators. The feed-forward neural networks (FFNNs), recurrent neural networks, long short-term memory units (LSTMs), and gated recurrent units are investigated. However, there is a lack in the selection criteria of the architectures’ hyper-parameters. Therefore, the genetic algorithm is integrated with the NN-based estimators to find the optimal hyper-parameters for the studied architectures. The tuned hyper-parameters in this work include the number of neurons, number of layers, activation function, optimizer type, and learning rate. The objective function of the optimization problem is minimizing the root-mean-square error (RMSE) on multiple testing data. The optimal models are further included in the design of a hybrid NN estimator with Kalman filter. In the hybrid estimators, the optimal NN estimators are used as virtual sensors to correct the prediction of the side-slip angle resulting from the mathematical lateral vehicle model. Eventually, the performance of the best selected model is evaluated in terms of different metrics;mean RMSE, mean error variance, mean training time, and mean estimation time. LSTMs are found to achieve the lowest mean RMSE while being tested on highly generalized data yielding the highest training and estimation time. However, FFNNs achieve the lowest RMSE while being tested on low generalized data and the lowest training and estimation time. Meanwhile, it is observed that the hybrid estimators achieved lower RMSE with great enhancement compared to the non-hybridized ones proving the effectiveness of the proposed approach and increasing the side-slip estimation generalization ability in unknown environments with high uncertainties, which are not covered by the training dataset for the NNs estimators. © The Author(s) 2024.

Mobile Crowdsensing (MCS) has emerged as a compelling paradigm for data sensing and collection, leveraging the widespread adoption of mobile devices and the active participation of numerous users. Despite its potential, MCS faces critical challenges, particularly in recruiting reliable workers and acquiring high-quality sensing data. Most existing approaches assume prior information on worker quality and are vulnerable to collusion attacks, especially having not comprehensively considered workers' reliability and stability. To address these problems, we propose a Multi-Armed Bandit (MAB) based Worker Recruitment Scheme (MWRS) integrated with the Tripartite Stackelberg Game (TSG) for MCS. Specifically, a trust evaluation and truth inference mechanism is introduced to assess the trustworthiness of workers through active truth detection. To enhance recruitment quality, we employ a trust-aware worker selection mechanism that utilizes a modified Upper Confidence Bound (UCB) algorithm, achieving an optimal balance between exploration and exploitation. Furthermore, the interactions among participants are modeled using a TSG framework, which formulates their respective payoffs to determine optimal decision-making strategies, thus achieving mutually beneficial outcomes. Extensive evaluations on real-world datasets demonstrate that our proposed scheme improves total quality by up to 30.8% and reduces regret by up to 80.3% compared to existing methods. © 2025 IEEE.

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) decouples the control and data planes, enhancing both network management and programmability. SDN switches in the data plane communicate with controllers, generating controller loads. However, dynamic network load changes can result in controller overloads. Some switches may need to be migrated to other controllers to solve the problem. With the growing focus on energy efficiency in networking, minimizing energy consumption from communications between switches and controllers becomes important. Thus, a load distribution strategy that also accounts for energy consumption is needed. This paper presents the Energy-aware Controller Load Distribution (ECLD) algorithm. It addresses the controller overload issue and aims to reduce the overall energy consumption associated with switch loads. It considers hop counts and energy costs, as well as the effect where a switch migration causes others to migrate to further controllers, increasing energy consumption. Evaluation results indicate that the ECLD algorithm achieves lower energy consumption compared to existing solutions. © 2024 IEEE.

Changes in the Atmospheric Electric Field Signal(AEFS)are highly correlated with weather changes,especially with thunderstorm ***,little attention has been paid to the ambiguous weather information implicit in AEFS *** this paper,a Fuzzy C-Means(FCM)clustering method is used for the first time to develop an innovative approach to characterize the weather attributes carried by ***,a time series dataset is created in the time domain using AEFS *** AEFS-based weather is evaluated according to the time-series Membership Degree(MD)changes obtained by inputting this dataset into the ***,thunderstorm intensities are reflected by the change in distance from a thunderstorm cloud point charge to an AEF ***,a matching relationship is established between the normalized distance and the thunderstorm dominant MD in the space ***,the rationality and reliability of the proposed method are verified by combining radar charts and expert *** results confirm that this method accurately characterizes the weather attributes and changes in the AEFS,and a negative distance-MD correlation is obtained for the first *** detection of thunderstorm activity by AEF from the perspective of fuzzy set technology provides a meaningful guidance for interpretable thunderstorms.

The flood early warning system can help mitigate the resulting damages by predicting future events. This is achieved through the utilization of data obtained from telemetry stations to predict the values of water levels in the future. Flood hazard maps are considered a tool for representing the potential flood events that occur in an area. This paper proposed a framework to apply the spatial and temporal data to generate flood hazard mapping using the integration of interpolation telemetry station data and a temporal prediction model. The framework consists of two components: 1) the temporal prediction model is applied to water level prediction on hourly and daily scales, and 2) the interpolation of spatial data to generate a flood hazard map. The evaluation results show that the hourly and daily temporal prediction models can predict the water level with an average of MAPE using 500 iterations are 3.17% and 4.88% of training, and 3.48% and 4.72% of testing. Then, the flood hazard map is generated. The accuracy is 70.90% and F1-score is 81.50% compared to the observation flood event. © 2024 IEEE.

The increasing complexity of designing, deploying, and maintaining Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), particularly those incorporating multiple interacting robots, presents significant challenges regarding programming and system integration. Existing methods and tools that aim to decrease the complexity of setting up such systems through modeling-based approaches often focus on single-robot interaction and rely on manual data entries, thus limiting their scalability and applicability to more intricate multi-robot environments. This contribution introduces the Robot ion Method (RobAM), a conceptual modeling method developed to decrease the design complexity of CPS through additional layers of abstraction. By utilizing conceptual modeling, capabilities of humanoid robots can be leveraged for the design of multi-robot interactions. Thereby, our approach enhances the modeling of complex CPS as well as the subsequent generation of code to enable efficient deployments. Through an experimental scenario, we demonstrate how RobAM simplifies the development process of CPS, paving the way for advancements regarding the integration of AI-supported technologies, such as Large Language Models, to ultimately generate contextually relevant semantics for future system design. © 2024 IEEE.

ADNeuroNet: a neuroevolution-based neural network algorithm for the diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases

Neurodegenerative disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) have adversely devastated the health and well-being of the older community. Given that early detection might help prevent or delay cognitive disorders associated with AD, developing an effective diagnostic technique is deemed appropriate to control the disease. Despite advances in clinical diagnostic standards and treatment techniques, the global prevalence of cognitive disturbance and behavioral problems remains steep. Besides the above challenge, the scarcity of AD-related open-source raw data prompted us to tailor ADNeuroNet, a neuroevolution-based neural network (NN) designed for predicting cognitively normal, mild cognitive impairment, and AD instances. To construct a robust NN algorithm that can predict the disease with high accuracy and improved efficiency, we worked on the combined cognitive and demographic clinical data to create a comprehensive model. Primarily, the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) repository was used to develop this program. We employed three distinct datasets and developed a predictive model that achieved the maximum performance accuracy of 93.42%. Utilizing only baseline details, the as-developed model successfully diagnosed and predicted neurodegenerative disorders and is likely to emerge as an effective clinical tool in future endeavors. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.
