Objective: Monitoring the depth of anesthesia (DoA) plays an important role for administering the drug injection during a surgery, i.e., preventing undesired awareness and inordinate anesthetic depth. Although the bispectral index (BIS) monitor is the golden standard system for the DoA monitoring, it is still not affordable for the developing countries. Alternatively, a low-cost electroencephalogram (EEG) headband can be used. The objective of this paper is to present a new algorithm for estimating the BIS values using a single frontal EEG channel. Method: In the first step, the EEG signal is filtered for the elimination of artifacts and is split into its sub-bands. In the second step, several linear and nonlinear features are extracted from each sub-band and fed to a random forest regression model in order to estimate the BIS. The performance of the proposed algorithm is assessed using EEG data recorded from twenty-four subjects during the general anesthesia and is validated in terms of correlation coefficient (CC) and absolute error (AE) between the reference and estimated BIS values. Results: The proposed algorithm achieved the mean CC of 0.83 and AE of 6.5 for intra subject variability and mean CC of 0.87 and AE of 5.5 for inter subject variability. Significance: Given the similar results for both intra and inter subject variability, the proposed algorithm has the potential to be used in the real-world scenario.

Optimization of institutional incentives for cooperation in structured populations

The application of incentives, such as reward and punishment, is a frequently applied way for promoting cooperation among interacting individuals in structured populations. However, how to properly use the incentives is still a challenging problem for incentive-providing institutions. In particular, since the implementation of incentive is costly, to explore the optimal incentive protocol, which ensures the desired collective goal at a minimal cost, is worthy of study. In this work, we consider the positive and negative incentives respectively for a structured population of individuals whose conflicting interactions are characterized by a prisoner’s dilemma game. We establish an index function for quantifying the cumulative cost during the process of incentive implementation, and theoretically derive the optimal positive and negative incentive protocols for cooperation on regular networks. We find that both types of optimal incentive protocols are identical and time-invariant. Moreover, we compare the optimal rewarding and punishing schemes concerning implementation cost and provide a rigorous basis for the usage of incentives in the game-theoretical framework. We further perform computer simulations to support our theoretical results and explore their robustness for different types of population structures, including regular, random, small-world, and scale-free networks. The electrocardiogram, also known as an electrocardiogram (ECG), is considered to be one of the most significant sources of data regarding the structure and function of the heart. In order to obtain an electrocardiogram, the contractions and relaxations of the heart are first captured in the proper recording medium. Due to the fact that irregularities in the functioning of the heart are reflected in the ECG indications, it is possible to use these indications to diagnose cardiac issues. Arrhythmia is the medical term for the abnormalities that might occur in the regular functioning of the heart (rhythm disorder). Environmental and genetic variables can both play a role in the development of arrhythmias. Arrhythmias are reflected on the ECG sign, which depicts the same region regardless of where in the heart they occur;thus, they may be seen in ECG signals. This is how arrhythmias can be detected. Due to the time limits of this study, the ECG signals of individuals who were healthy, as well as those who suffered from arrhythmias were divided into 10-minute segments. The arithmetic mean approach is one of the fundamental statistical factors. It is used to construct the feature vectors of each received wave and interval, and these vectors offer information regarding arrhythmias in accordance with the agreed-upon temporal restrictions. In order to identify the heart arrhythmias, the obtained feature vectors are fed into a classifier that is based on a multilayer perceptron neural network. In conclusion, ROC analysis and contrast matrix are utilised in order to evaluate the overall correct classification result produced by the ECG-based classifier. Because of this, it has been demonstrated that the method that was recommended has high classification accuracy when attempting to diagnose arrhythmia based on ECG indications. Recording the provenance of scientific computation results is key to the support of traceability, reproducibility and quality assessment of data products. Several data models have been explored to address this need, providing representations of workflow plans and their executions as well as means of packaging the resulting information for archiving and sharing. However, existing approaches tend to lack interoperable adoption across workflow management systems. In this work we present Workflow Run RO-Crate, an extension of RO-Crate (research Object Crate) and *** to capture the provenance of the execution of computational workflows at different levels of granularity and bundle together all their associated objects (inputs, outputs, code, etc.). The model is supported by a diverse, open community that runs regular meetings, discussing development, maintenance and adoption aspects. Workflow Run RO-Crate is already implemented by several workflow management systems, allowing interoperable comparisons between workflow runs from heterogeneous systems. We describe the model, its alignment to standards such as W3C PROV, and its implementation in six workflow systems. Finally, we illustrate the application of Workflow Run RO-Crate in two use cases of machine learning in the digital image analysis domain. © 2023, CC BY.

Phonon-trapping enhanced energy resolution in superconducting single photon detectors

A noiseless, photon counting detector, which resolves the energy of each photon, could radically change astronomy, biophysics and quantum optics. Superconducting detectors promise an intrinsic resolving power at visible wavelengths of R = E/δE ≈ 100 due to their low excitation energy. We study superconducting energy-resolving Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs), which hold particular promise for larger cameras. A visible/near-infrared photon absorbed in the superconductor creates a few thousand quasiparticles through several stages of electron-phonon interaction. Here we demonstrate experimentally that the resolving power of MKIDs at visible to near-infrared wavelengths is limited by the loss of hot phonons during this process. We measure the resolving power of our aluminum-based detector as a function of photon energy using four lasers with wavelengths between 1545−402 nm. For detectors on thick SiN/Si and sapphire substrates the resolving power is limited to 10 − 21 for the respective wavelengths, consistent with the loss of hot phonons. When we suspend the sensitive part of the detector on a 110 nm thick SiN membrane, the measured resolving power improves to 19 − 52 respectively. The improvement is equivalent to a factor 8 ± 2 stronger phonon trapping on the membrane, which is consistent with a geometrical phonon propagation model for these hot phonons. Economic Load Dispatch depicts a fundamental role in the operation of power systems, as it decreases the environmental load, minimizes the operating cost, and preserves energy resources. The optimal solution to Economic Load Dispatch problems and various constraints can be obtained by evolving several evolutionary and swarm-based algorithms. The major drawback to swarm-based algorithms is premature convergence towards an optimal solution. Fitness Dependent Optimizer is a novel optimization algorithm stimulated by the decision-making and reproductive process of bee swarming. Fitness Dependent Optimizer (FDO) examines the search spaces based on the searching approach of Particle Swarm Optimization. To calculate the pace, the fitness function is utilized to generate weights that direct the search agents in the phases of exploitation and exploration. In this research, the authors have carried out Fitness Dependent Optimizer to solve the Economic Load Dispatch problem by reducing fuel cost, emission allocation, and transmission loss. Moreover, the authors have enhanced a novel variant of Fitness Dependent Optimizer, which incorporates novel population initialization techniques and dynamically employed sine maps to select the weight factor for Fitness Dependent Optimizer. The enhanced population initialization approach incorporates a quasi-random Sabol sequence to generate the initial solution in the multi-dimensional search space. A standard 24-unit system is employed for experimental evaluation with different power demands. Empirical results obtained using the enhanced variant of the Fitness Dependent Optimizer demonstrate superior performance in terms of low transmission loss, low fuel cost, and low emission allocation compared to the conventional Fitness Dependent Optimizer. The experimental study obtained 7.94E-12, the lowest transmission loss using the enhanced Fitness Dependent Optimizer. Correspondingly, various standard estimations are used to prove the stability

The burgeoning field of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) continues to attract research interest, particularly with the potential of copper iodide (CuI) as a high-performing hole transport layer (HTL). This review comprehensively examines the intrinsic advantages of solid-state CuI as HTL for PSC applications due to its exceptional p-type conductivity, ambient stability, and ease of synthesis. Moreover, the review explores cutting-edge strategies for mitigating defects to preserve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of the device including optimization of synthesis, defect engineering through stoichiometry control, interface engineering and doping engineering. Notably, lanthanum (La) doping engineering on CuI demonstrates remarkable potential, offering enhanced structural compatibility due to its ionic size, improved band alignment, and a substantial reduction in deep-level traps contributing to carrier recombination. This groundbreaking doping strategy produces La-doped CuI HTL that addresses the challenges at the perovskite/HTL interface, leading to an elevation in the PCE of the PSCs. As PSC technology advances toward commercial viability, CuI emerges as a linchpin in accelerating progress in the quest for highly efficient and stable solar energy solutions. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Internet of Things (IoT) technology is one of the topics being hotly discussed as one of the innovations in the era of Industry 4.0. On the other hand, there are still many conventional devices installed around us that are not ready to adopt IoT technology, so we need to find ways to add IoT features to these conventional devices at a low cost. One of the main benefits of implementing IoT technology is that we can monitor and control the consumption of resources which will have direct implications for the efficiency of routine costs that must be paid. Inefficient use of resources we often find in government agencies which incidentally payment of routine costs does not use private funds so there is less concern to be frugal. The use of clean water that continues to flow from a faucet that is not closed or leaking is an example that we often find every day. For this reason, it is necessary to develop a system that can monitor and control the consumption of resources when human culture is inadequate to care. One of them is by implementing the IoT technology using several sensors and actuators that have specific functions that are attached to the microcontroller and connected to the LoRa module for low power usage. The results obtained in the form of a servo motor-based system and solenoid valve-based system function properly to monitor and control clean water consumption with their respective advantages and disadvantages.

Convergent adaptive control based prescribed-time synchronization of switched fuzzy competitive network systems with time-varying delays

This paper addresses the prescribed-time control problem for discontinuous fuzzy neutral-type competitive neural networks (FNTCNNs) featuring switchings and time-varying delays. Notably, FNTCNNs constitute a generalized class of singularly perturbed Filippov systems. The establishment of a prescribed-time stability lemma for time-varying delay singularly perturbed systems remains a critical yet unresolved challenge. To address this, we first develop a novel prescribed-time stability lemma for singularly perturbed Filippov systems using adjustment functions, the comparison principle, and inequality techniques. This is achieved through the application of the one-norm and the introduction of a new stability definition for such systems. Considering the switching law inherent in FNTCNNs, we achieve prescribed-time stabilization control by designing adaptive prescribed-time control strategies, employing differential inclusion theory and Filippov’s solution framework. The proposed adaptive control strategies demonstrate convergence properties, ensuring that both the control strategies and system state variables converge to zero within the same prescribed-time interval. These newly developed strategies offer significant advantages over existing approaches. Finally, we validate our principal results through numerical simulations of second-order multi-agent systems subject to discontinuous disturbances.
