At the beginning of the academic year 2011-2012 the Central Library of faculty of Electrical engineering and computing (FER) set foot in the world of Web 2.0 expanding to social networks: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Google+. The necessity to integrate social networks into library management occurred due to the presence of a large number of patrons on the Web. It also turned out that besides being a learning and resource centre, the essential concept of a modern library refers to its active participation in teaching. For the purpose of this study we have isolated the Central Library Facebook Page, as the most significant in social networking. This paper will review and analyze the reactions of users/patrons to the content offered by the Central Library FER and the interaction over a certain time period. In the long run, it is expected that the Facebook Page will allow a form of maintaining users/patrons database, close communication, development of interactive services, breaking the conventional stereotypes of libraries and librarians, in other words, opening the door to the “living-room library” concept.

Given the area of their research, the students of the faculty of Electrical engineering and computing (FER) need the latest scientific information from both domestic and foreign journals. That is why the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sports has provided them with the access to various databases of scientific and technical journals. Furthermore, the faculty of Electrical engineering and computing is a provider of one of the most important databases for engineers - IEEE Explore. Students can access these databases either from their homes or from the faculty premises; they can also attend seminars on information retrieval. The goal of this article is presenting the research on students of the faculty of Electrical engineering and computing, their usage of available databases and their familiarity with the search tools for those databases.

The article deals with the problem of assessing student knowledge in programming courses at the Department of Applied computing of faculty of Electrical engineering and computing, University of Zagreb, Croatia. It discusses the evolution of an assessment system from a simple midterm and homework based model to a more complex and better organized model in order to eliminate a negative backwash effect and to stimulate an active approach to learning. Various types of employed assessments are presented, their theoretical background discussed and the success of their implementation evaluated.

The main characteristics of computer system developed for support of teaching the Fundamentals of electrical engineering are described, with emphasis on computer use in knowledge evaluation. The ways of actual computer use in knowledge testing are presented, and the possibilities of development of distance testing are discussed, regarding distance learning, as well as data security issues. At the end, the possibilities to apply the developed system in teaching at other universities and secondary schools are considered.

The laboratory for telecommunications software technologies is part of the Department of Telecommunications at the faculty of Electrical engineering and computing at Zagreb. The basic purpose of this laboratory is education of undergraduate and postgraduate students at the authors' Department (especially within the course "Information, logic and languages") and investigation within the project COST 247-"Verification/Validation Of Communication Software By Formal Methods" in which their Department has been involved since 1995. The laboratory is equipped with the help of the Ericsson Nikola Tesla company, and it enables research of specification, verification, simulation and implementation problems, related to telecommunication software. The authors are especially focused on the problems of concurrency, parallelism, distributed control and processing, which are of great importance in the telecommunications area.

Since the early 1990s, open access (OA) scholarly publishing has become widespread in the international scientific community. Although there are numerous benefits of OA publishing, researchers experience a number of disadvantages related to the transition to the OA model. Article processing charges (APCs) paid by authors/institutions have become a key mechanism for funding full OA (the gold OA model). This paper addresses the issue of OA publication costs and attempts to find out what financial resources have been used by researchers at the University of Zagreb, faculty of Electrical engineering and computing for publishing in gold OA journals over the last five years. The published OA articles indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection for the period from 2016 to 2020 were analysed. A quantitative analysis of Journal Citation Reports metrics for 163 journals was conducted to identify a relationship between APCs and journal rankings. In addition, a detailed study of gold OA articles was carried out by examining the websites of 31 publishers and identifying APCs for 64 journals. Funding and collaboration models were extracted for 174 gold OA articles as they provide insight into the extent of national funding in relation to financing based on international collaboration. Finally, a calculation of invested funds over the last five years is presented.

Electricity price forecasting plays a vital role inthe strategy decision making for almost all power marketparticipants. This article investigates statistical background andpotential relations between different power market products (***-ahead prices, intraday prices, etc.). Danish and Croatianpower markets are used for the purpose of the case studyto present the methods used in this article. First, Danish andCroatian power market structures are shortly explained to clarifythe context of the problem. The data collection and preprocessingmethods are described, followed by the core focus of the study:statistical analysis. In addition to the presented histograms ofrespective power market components, we examine interrelationships through statistical analysis, demonstrating significantcorrelations both numerically and graphically. Furthermore, price spreads are investigated as a logical next step of the noticedcorrelations. Our comparative analysis of Danish and Croatianmarket peculiarities reveals three key findings: i) statisticallysignificant relationships between specific market components,ii) distinct behavioral patterns among observed factors, and iii) anopen-access analytical tool with accompanying dataset for futureresearch. Finally, the findings of this article present to marketparticipants an efficient tool to adjust business strategies andincrease profit.
