Silicon photovoltaic cells have been widely used in harvesting solar energy, and research efforts have driven significant improvements in the efficiencies of the photovoltaic cells. However, research on the application of silicon photovoltaic cells in thermophotovoltaic systems is significantly underdeveloped. In this study, a simulation study was conducted to study the performance of a black silicon photovoltaic cell in thermophotovoltaic applications. The photovoltaic cell was paired with two emitters made of different materials: a 1735 K Yb2O3 emitter, and a 1500 K Ta PhC emitter. The results of the simulation showed that when paired with the Yb2O3 emitter and the Ta PhC emitter, the cell efficiency was 1.7% and 0.76% respectively. The low efficiency in both was attributed to the limited amount of energy that is available above the band gap of silicon. The simulation results indicate that the Yb2O3 yielded better efficiency, as the selectivity of the emitter was better compared to the Ta PhC emitter. © Institute of Technology PETRONAS Sdn Bhd (Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS) 2024.

Electrical vehicles (EVs) presence forecasting on a parking lot with charging points is critical for charging schedule optimisation with providing demand response to the power grid. The paper leans on our previous work where we proposed innovative aggregated representation of EV population. The historical dataset is transformed in the aggregated representation, and it is analysed and used for training of two gradient boosting models in order to forecast future EV population. The predictions are generated on 2 hours forecasting horizon. Achieved accuracy is compared to week-of-day average and persistence. © 2023 IEEE.

Broadband matching of a small transmitting dipole is a long-standing problem in the antenna community. It is well known that classical passive resonant matching is inherently constrained by very narrow bandwidth. On the other hand, there are active approaches such as non-Foster-based matching and the recently intensively studied time-varying-based matching. This contribution gives a brief overview of all these approaches and compares their advantages and disadvantages. In addition, a novel approach is proposed that mimics a stable two-element non-Foster-based broadband matching of a short transmitting dipole, using a time-varying approach. © 2023 International Union of Radio Science.

The massive penetration of distributed energy resources (DER) encourages the provision of frequency regulation services at the distribution network level following large frequency disturbances occurring at the transmission system side. The availability of reduced-order or aggregated models will facilitate the coordination between transmission and distribution system operators. As there are no models that can capture the dynamics of diverse distributed technologies and their control systems by a unified single device model, this paper presents the single equivalent device based on the virtual synchronous machine (VSM) technology that can subsume the frequency response of different DER and loads. The validation of the proposed model is performed on the adjusted IEEE 9-bus system for different multi-energy systems. Simulated scenarios have demonstrated the accuracy of proposed aggregation with a maximum relative error of 0.1% as well as computational improvement of almost 100%. © 2023 IEEE.

Food authenticity is a significant concern in the meat industry, demanding effective detection methods. This study explores the use of multispectral imaging (MSI) and deep learning for meat adulteration detection. We evaluate different deep learning models using transfer learning and preprocessing techniques in a multi-level adulteration classification task. In addition, we propose a novel approach called one-band mixed augmentation for band selection in MSI data, which outperforms traditional reflectance-based feature selection and enhances model robustness. Furthermore, employing the ninecrop approach for dataset augmentation improved the accuracy from 0.63 to 0.74 for DenseNet201 model without transfer learning. This research contributes to advancing food safety assessment practices and provides insights into the application of deep learning for preventing food adulteration. The proposed one-band mixed augmentation approach offers a novel strategy for handling band selection challenges in MSI data analysis. © 2023 Polish Information Processing Society.

A lightning current measurement system for wind turbines was developed and tested in the High Voltage Laboratory at the faculty of Electrical engineering and computing, University of Zagreb, to determine actual distributions of lightning current parameters in a particular wind turbine area. The output of the measurement system is a waveform of lightning current. The measurement system consists of two current sensors with different frequency and amplitude ranges and a real-Time controller with two digitizers and a GPS module. The current sensors are Rogowski coils connected to integrators with coaxial cables. The prototype was installed on a wind turbine in a high winter lightning activity area. The current stage of development involves integrating the high-speed camera into the prototype measurement system to obtain the visual confirmation of the waveform measurements and help categorize lightning strikes into downward or upward strikes. The camera control application was developed in LabVIEW. The camera was set to trigger by the real-Time controller. Also, a redundant trigger occurs when there is a change in motion in the camera frame in case the prototype measurement system fails to register a lightning strike and therefore fails to send a trigger signal to the camera. The camera control application was tested in the High Voltage Laboratory by recording a flashover in a spark gap and a flashover on the insulator. © 2023 IEEE.

Collaborative filtering recommender systems are one of the essential recommender systems and are still widely used in combination with other algorithms to make predictions for users. However, they are vulnerable to shilling attacks, and if there isn't any detection system to prevent those attacks, original recommendations can be heavily influenced to benefit the attackers. Designing attack-resistant recommendation systems is not an easy task, and many researchers have tried to tackle that problem. In this paper, a new approach that combines multiple random forest models is proposed. Each of the random forest models is specialized in detecting one group of shilling attacks, and then all the models are combined into an ensemble model. Experimental results show that the proposed ensemble is capable of detecting attack profiles at high rate without causing significant bias in the original recommendation system. © 2023 MIPRO Croatian Society.

Current major changes in distribution systems require better monitoring from energy utilities to prevent possible issues in the form of deterioration of power quality and stability, voltage oscillations, and many others. However, distribution networks are still characterized by their limited observability, where information such as switching state and line parameters are not known. This constraint further complicates analyses concerning the observations of distribution networks. Therefore, this paper proposes a methodology that, as an answer to these problems, offers machine learning-based algorithms that aim to determine the switching state and line parameters of distribution networks using only collected historical Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) measurements. This model was tested on the radial IEEE 33-bus benchmark system and both meshed and radial real-world distribution networks. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can provide an accurate estimation of line parameters and network topology relying only on voltage magnitudes and active and reactive power measurements. © 2023 IEEE.

This study will introduce the use of Docker for simple application packaging to investigate the impact of packaging on application deployment and management. Containerization is a technological method for packaging and consuming applications in a self-contained environment that is more efficient than virtualization. Docker is a well-known containerization platform that enables efficient creation, deployment, and management of applications by focusing and efficiently utilizing resources across multiple locations. Delivering programs and investigating their similarities in terms of consistency, efficiency, and effectiveness. It also solves security issues and multi-container issues. The approach will be to package a simple web application, deploy it via Docker, and then measure how performance and manageability are improved compared to traditional deployments. Using Docker for application deployment helps you better understand how containerization can improve and simplify deployment and management in today's software development. © 2025 IEEE.

This project concentrates on simulating the batch microbial biosurfactant production in crude oil and its interfacial tension response. Bacterial metabolism has been widely studied for its significant role in bioremediation of oil spill, which is proven capable of reducing the interfacial tension between oil and water. Therefore, this simulation is integrated to observe the metabolic behaviour of the bacteria of interest upon its uptake of carbon source from crude oil., biosurfactant production and the system's interfacial tension which are some of the outputs mainly being discussed within the culture system. The metabolic process in the crude oil batch is first modelled, then simulated in MATLAB software, and the results are verified through literature and process theories, while the model was validated using the experimental data. The simulation will use a step size of 1/60 h, equivalent to 60 seconds, set to a total of 11520 iterations for a running time of 8 days. Different crude oil substrate concentrations are set to 1.5 g/L, 2.0g/L, 2.5g/L, 3.0g/L and 3.5 g/L for parameter testing and the initial concentrations of biosurfactant and cell concentration are 0.02 g/L and 0.02 g/L respectively, while the initial interfacial tension is set at 70.8933 mN/m. The simulation outcome in this study signifies that the final concentrations of biosurfactant and bacteria cell increases with the increase in substrate concentration as crude oil degrades completely quicker with substrate concentration increase among culture batches obtained from the parameter testing. Additionally, the simulated interfacial tension profile plotted against biosurfactant from experimental research., showed similar profiles across batch cultures with an increasing substrate concentration where IFT is reduced from 70 ± 0.5 mN/m to 38 ± mN/m, but exhibited decreasing value of biosurfactant concentration defined at 0.5 micelle concentration (based on experimental value). © 2023 IEEE.
