Today, life-long learning is a way of life and Malaysian universities took this opportunity by offering executive masters programs to engineering managers and industrial practitioners to prepare themselves for moving up to higher job ladder. This paper present findings from an alumni's survey conducted between July and August 2011 with respect to program relevancy, appropriateness of program objectives (POs) and program educational outcomes (PEOs). A set of self administered survey questionnaire was developed and sent to the alumni via postal mail and email. Their feedbacks would be used to update this program POs and PEOs to ensure their appropriateness and relevancy. Survey results show high overall values of alumni perception of POs (i.e. between 4.22- 4.29) and PEOs (i.e. between 4.24 - 4.54). In addition, the standard deviations for all POs and PEOs are less than 1.0, which shows common agreement of the perception of importance by the alumni.

Cross-disciplinary research is a research activity that extends beyond simple collaboration to integrate data, methodologies, perspectives and concepts from various research disciplines. The approach of cross-disciplinary research taken at the faculty of engineering and Built environment (FKAB), in transforming the researcher, is still deem to be at its minimum because there has yet to be a study on unravelling the challenges of reinforcing cross-disciplinary research. Furthermore, the absence of a guideline for conducting such research prohibits the researcher to pursue his research into different discipline. The purpose of this paper is to examine the difficulty factors that contribute to the less than effective cross-disciplinary researches at the FKAB. In addition, through the conducted data analysis, a preliminary guideline can be formed, which can then be used as a guide and resource to develop awareness and capability in implementing cross-disciplinary research. The study was conducted using qualitative and quantitative methods. The qualitative method taken was distributing a questionnaire to academicians at the FKAB. Data obtained are then analysed using WinSteps 3.68.2, which is software utilised in Rasch measurement analysis. Overall, results show that the main factor contributing to difficulties in implementing cross-disciplinary research is the need for solid financial funding.

This study was undertaken to examine employability of graduated from the facultyengineering and Built environment (FKAB) for the year 2011. The employability study was conducted to identifying the percentage of graduates who obtained employment, and to identify satisfaction of graduates with the program they have follow during their study. In addition the study is to examine graduates job scope after graduation and study the influence of graduates CGPA on their employability. This study was conducted on graduates who have completed their study at the May 8, 2011. Survey forms distributed to the group from time to time in stages where it is to follow the progress of FKAB graduates employability for the one year. The first phase of this study was conducted in early July 2011, and the’ monkey survey’ method (online survey methods) was applied in the success of this employability study. In general, almost 50% of the respondents for this first phase have their first job after a month of final transcript release.

Industrial training program is a prerequisite course for all undergraduate students in the faculty of engineering & Built environment (FKAB), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). By having this training program, students are exposed to the responsibility of an engineer and engineering profession. This study was carried out to compare the students’ perception on the benefit of the Industrial Training program for the year 2010. A 5-point-Likert scale questionnaire based on students’ perception before and after industrial training were given to 318 trainee students in the faculty. All raw data were analysed using descriptive statistics and t-test measurement. The results show that there was a statistical different (p<0.05) between students’ perception before and after the industrial training. These results also proved that the industrial training program is merely beneficial to the students in terms of engineering education improvement and engineering profession.

This paper reports an alumni survey conducted in 2010 on postgraduate alumni of the faculty of engineering and Built environment, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The survey was aimed at acquiring alumni responses with regards to their perception and satisfaction on three aspects of education, namely; Part A - achievement of Programme Educational Objectives (PEO) and Programme Outcomes (PO); Part B - assessment of curriculum and delivery process; Part C - perception on available facilities and resources. A total of 36 responses are obtained, out of which 58% are local graduates. The survey results of Part A shows that more than 60% of the respondents give a rating of above 4 (‘quite a lot’ to ‘very much’) to the achievements related to acquisition of knowledge and skills including lifelong learning, decision making, logical thinking, critical analysis, creativity, communication, problem solving and teamwork. For Part B on assessment of curriculum and delivery process, more that 50% of the respondents ‘agree’ to ‘strongly agree’ with most of the statements related to curriculum and lecturers. For Part C on facilities and resources, more that 60% of respondents give a rating of ‘good; to ‘very good to the available facilities. Results from the survey will be used to enhance the academic programmes as part of the continual quality improvement initiatives for graduate studies at the faculty.

This paper presents the results of a study on the actual notional hours of workload for academicians at the faculty of engineering and Built environment (FKAB) of University Kebangsaan Malaysia. The study is aimed at ascertaining the hours allocated for teaching, supervising postgraduate and undergraduate students, conducting research, publishing, attending conference, providing consultation as well as public services. The study involved 29 academicians comprising Professors, Associate Professors, and lecturer (with and without PhD) from all five departments namely Mechanical and Materials engineering, Electrical, Electronics and Systems engineering, Civil and Structural engineering, Chemical and Process engineering and Architecture. The time allocated by each respondent for teaching:research:services is compared to the percentage agreed in the academicians Performance Assessment Report (LNP), that is 30%:60%:10%. Results from the study indicated that 62.1% of the respondents devoted 40 hours more than the designated time per week. This issue is critical and has to be rectified in a systematic and strategic manner

The study was conducted to identify indoor air quality and the level of thermal comfort in various selected locations in faculty of engineering and Built environment (FKAB), University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) with built-up area of 250,936 fie. The indoor air quality and thermal comfort were measured at various selected locations by using indoor air quality equipment (Thermal Comfort SERI). The thermal comfort assessments are based on Malaysian Code of Practice Indoor Air Quality 2005 and Moderate Thermal environments-Determination of the PMV and PPD indices specification of the condition for thermal comfort (ISO7730:1994) From the data analysis, the FKAB building is considered inadequately vented space. The concentration of CO2 for all sampling area evaluated exceeds the recommended concentration (〉 1000 ppm). The ventilation system used in FKAB building is designed by delivering fix amount of fresh air into building from external building without consideration on the number of occupants. This common ventilation design will increase the amount of CO2 dramatically all day long and these reflect the inefficiency of energy used. The faculty needs to be equipped with a comprehensive energy management system that can allow detailed documentation of continuous performance of all energy system and consumption in the building.

Water quality management is essential for sustaining aquatic ecosystems and public health. Different approaches, such as trading ratio systems (TRS), offer economic incentives for reducing pollutant discharges and promote cost-effective compliance with water quality standards. This study evaluates the impact of equitable initial permit allocation on the willingness of dischargers to engage in trading and examines its effect on abatement cost savings within a TRS framework for riverine water quality management. The methodology combines a multi-objective optimization model with the Streeter-Phelps simulation to assess permit allocation and trading scenarios in the Sefidrood River. The model was calibrated and validated using 58 years of historical data, generating Pareto front curves for objective functions across three periods with progressively stricter water quality standards. According to the optimization results, equitable permit allocation significantly influenced trading behavior and cost efficiency. Equitable initial permit allocation led to significant reductions in total abatement costs: 58% in the first period, 62% in the second period, and 45% in the third period. These cost savings were achieved through increased trading participation, as evidenced by higher trading ratios and greater traded permit volumes across scenarios. Across the three evaluated periods, each consisting of seven trading scenarios, equitable permit allocation led to significant reductions in total abatement costs, with reduction of 58%, 62%, and 45% in the first, second, and third periods, respectively, while maintaining compliance with BOD standards. These findings highlight those scenarios with higher equity indices facilitated greater participation in trading, leading to increased cost savings and promoting collaborative pollution control among dischargers. The proposed TRS model effectively balances economic efficiency and fairness, offering a viable solution for sustainable water
