This study examines how a community in Yogyakarta, Indonesia reacts to the closing of local landfills. It identifies different groups within the community, such as those primarily concerned with health and aesthetics, those exhibiting proactive behaviors, and those acutely aware of the broader impacts. These groups show varying responses to the closures, from adjusting personal habits to calling for policy changes. The findings suggest a need for policies that are flexible and considerate of the community's diverse priorities and behaviors. In conclusion, landfill closures have complex effects on communities that require a thoughtful analysis. The study shows that personal choices and proactive behaviors are crucial in encouraging community involvement in waste management. However, there's a hesitancy to pay more for such services, indicating a gap in community responsibility and environmental stewardship. The research advocates for sustainable waste management solutions that are aligned with the community's values and behaviors, urging policymakers to design inclusive and sustainable systems for waste management that support the long-term well-being of both the community and the environment. © 2024

This comprehensive study investigates the radiation attenuation properties of various bismuth (Bi) and lead (Pb) based alloys, with a focus on identifying superior shielding materials for nuclear safety and industrial radiation protection. The research encompasses an in-depth analysis of seven alloys, namely GTSB5, Sn%40Bi, Bi50Sn50, A1, PbAl-4, Safe Alloy, and P1, assessing their efficacy in gamma-ray and neutron attenuation. Utilizing some computational tools, various parameters such as mass and linear attenuation coefficients, half and tenth value layer values, effective atomic and electron numbers, buildup factors, and transmission values were evaluated. Our findings highlight Alloy P1's outstanding performance, attributed to its high density (11.05 g/cm3) and optimized elemental composition, including Silver (Ag). In addition, P1 demonstrates exceptional gamma-ray attenuation across multiple energy spectra and superior neutron shielding capabilities, evidenced by its significant fast neutron removal cross-section (∑R, 0.12003 1/cm). The study revealed that the addition of Ag enhances the photon and beta particle absorption capacity, positioning P1 as a promising material in radiation shielding applications. The correlations between alloy density and gamma-ray shielding properties were particularly notable, with P1's density contributing to its enhanced attenuation capabilities. Furthermore, P1's lower half value layers (1.14469 cm) and tenth value layers (3.80256 cm) at 15 MeV indicate its efficiency in reducing radiation intensity with minimal material thickness. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

The utilization of plant-mediated methods to synthesize metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) is becoming increasingly popular due to its simplicity, low cost, and environmental friendliness. Adonida merrilli leaf extracts in aqueous form were used for the production of nanoparticles of zinc oxide (ZnO). scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and UV-Vis spectrophotometer were accustomed to analyze the ZnO nanoparticles. The antibacterial effects of the ZnO NPs was examined on pathogens such Salmonella, Candida, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas *** indicate spherical crystalline nanoparticles with an average particle size of 73.82 nm. Zinc oxide nanoparticle absorption wavenumber at 715 cm-1 was seen in the FTIR, and EDX chemical mapping confirms the elemental composition of zinc and oxygen. For Candida, Salmonella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus measured Zones of Inhibition (ZI) values are 30.00, 36.00, 32.00, 40.00, and 36.00 mm, and the measured Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) values are 7.81, 1.95, 7.81, 1.95, and 3.90 mg/mL, respectively. The results of this investigation, as shown by the MIC and ZI values, point to the possible use of Adonida merrilli extract in the synthesis of highly crystalline Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) as an alternative medication.

Aluminium nitride (AIN) thin film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) sensor for hydrogen sulfide gas detection has been designed and mathematically modelled using CoventorWare and MATLAB software, respectively. The designed FBAR sensor is based on the PiezoMUMPs fabrication technology. The detection principle of the FBAR gas sensor is based on the resonant frequency changes detection due to the mass change on the top electrode of the sensor induced by the absorbed gas molecules by the nanomaterial deposited on the surface of the top electrode device. Reduced graphene oxide hybrid with copper oxide was considered as the sensitive nanomaterials and their mass loaded was evaluated in the theoretically calculation. The resonant frequency of the shear mode of the FBAR sensor has been calculated theoretically and found to be 9.4524 GHz. The effects of the gas molecules on the resonant frequency have been investigated using a mathematical equation and it shown that the increasing of the gas mass on the sensor surface will reduce the sensor resonant frequency. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the sensor was calculated to be 0.22615 Hz/fg. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

This study presents an Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) to evaluate the management strategies for Human-Orangutan Conflict (HOC) in Aceh, Indonesia. Utilizing an IPA Grid, the research categorizes various management strategies into four quadrants, each reflecting different levels of community-perceived importance and performance. Strategies like “Orangutan-Safe Fences” and “Community-Based natural Resource Management (CBNRM) for Orangutans” in Quadrant A are both important and performing well, underscoring the effectiveness of current efforts in these areas. Significantly, “Traditional Measures for Orangutan Deterrence,” which include non-harmful, traditional methods such as the use of specific noise deterrents, physical barriers, and community-led patrols to discourage orangutans from entering human areas, alongside “Quick Response program for Orangutan Incidents,” are placed in Quadrant B. In Quadrant C, “Strengthen Law Enforcement and Conservation Policies” are deemed less crucial and underperforming, suggesting a lower priority for immediate resource allocation. Lastly, Quadrant D includes well-performing but less critical strategies like “Early Warning Systems for Orangutan Presence” and “Raise Local Awareness About Orangutans,” pointing to potential over-investment. The study's findings advocate for a strategic reallocation of resources and highlight the importance of aligning conservation efforts with community priorities for effective and sustainable HOC management. © 2024 The Author(s)

This research delves into the complex factors that affect how ready a community is to embrace new environmental development strategies, which could significantly change the region's social and economic fabric. Using a structured questionnaire, exploratory factor analysis and logistic regression analysis, the study assesses how corporate practices in resource management, environmental governance, efforts to enhance community capabilities, and various demographic factors influence the community's willingness to adapt to change. Despite its intentions to benefit both the mining operations and the community, corporate resource management appears to have a paradoxical impact on the community's willingness to pursue new environmental paths. This negative impact can be attributed to the dependency it creates. Effective corporate resource management can lead to a community becoming heavily reliant on the stability and benefits provided by the mining company. This dependency fosters a sense of security and satisfaction with the status quo, making community members less inclined to explore or support new and potentially disruptive environmental strategies. The stability provided by the mine's resource management practices may inadvertently anchor the community to existing economic structures, reducing their impetus to seek alternative livelihoods or adapt to new socioeconomic conditions. However, it is essential to consider the limitations of this finding. One limitation is the potential bias in community perceptions, where immediate benefits from corporate resource management overshadow long-term considerations for sustainable development. Additionally, the context-specific nature of this study means that these findings may not be universally applicable to all mining communities. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

It is very important to reintroduce waste to the economy in the most efficient way and to reduce their amount both from the point of view of economic and environmental problems. However, when waste is evaluated, not only its elimination but also its use in areas with high added value should be considered. This study is aimed to create a different usage area for the slag wastes that cause problems to the environment and factories. For this reason, two different coatings;the low-cost BFS and commercial 80Ni-20Cr coatings have been successfully deposited on 316L stainless steel substrates by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) and high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) spraying techniques, respectively. The coatings’ microstructural properties and wear performance were studied under dry sliding conditions in ball-on-flat reciprocating tests using an Al2O3 ball as the counterpart. Reciprocating wear tests were comparatively evaluated under various dry sliding conditions. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy was used to examine the surface morphology and elemental analysis of coatings (EDS). The wear traces obtained from the tests were examined using a 3D optical profilometer. The phases in the samples were determined with the X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. This study was carried out to determine the applicability of BFS waste material in material coating technologies, to investigate its usability in industrial applications, and to determine its performance for commercially used coatings against wear-oriented damage mechanisms. As a result of the study results, it has been seen that BFS material can be produced by the thermal spray coating method in material coating technologies and has similar properties to Ni-Cr coatings in commercial use in terms of wear performance. © 2023, The Authors. Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (MAPEOs) are considered to be one of the main sources of mercury release into the environment. Considering the gold mining activities, this study evaluated the Hg concentration in 27 apiaries (Apis spp.) in the South of the Legal Amazon, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. A total of 243 samples distributed in 81 samples of bees, 81 beeswax, and 81 of honeys, collected between the months of July and November 2022, were analyzed. One bee sample showed Hg concentration above the limit of quantification (68.8 ng g−1), 27 samples were between the limit of detection and limit of quantification (15 samples of bees, 8 of wax and 4 of honey). In all study areas, trace levels of Hg concentration were detected, 12 near MAPEOs areas and 16 near crop areas. It recorded that the honeys analyzed in this study in Mato Grosso are not contaminated by Hg, not offering any risk to consumers of the product. It is noteworthy that the use of bioindicator tools such as bees, beeswax, and honey is effective in relation to Hg monitoring in apiaries. It can also infer that the implementation of beekeeping in areas that will go through experience the process of environmental recovery, after the mining exploitation, is feasible, in line with permanent biomonitoring of the region. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Konrad Burnik suggests a structure-preserving QR factorization for centrosymmetric matrices, known as QX factorization. In this article, we obtain the explicit expressions for rigorous perturbation bounds of the QX factorization when the original matrix is perturbed, either norm-wise or component-wise. First, using the matrix-equation approach, weak rigorous perturbation bounds are derived. Then, strong rigorous perturbation bounds are obtained by combining the modified matrix-vector equation approach with the strategy for the Lyapunov majorant function and the Banach fixed-point theorem. This study focuses on the numerical analysis and optimal control of vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWT) using Bayesian reinforcement learning (RL). We specifically address small-scale wind turbines, which are well-suited to local and compact production of electrical energy on a small scale, such as urban and rural infrastructure installations. Existing literature concentrates on large scale wind turbines which run in unobstructed, mostly constant wind profiles. However urban installations generally must cope with rapidly changing wind patterns. To bridge this gap, we formulate and implement an RL strategy using the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm to optimize the long-term energy output of a wind turbine. Our MCMC-based RL algorithm is a model-free and gradient-free algorithm, in which the designer does not have to know the precise dynamics of the plant and its uncertainties. Our method addresses the uncertainties by using a multiplicative reward structure, in contrast with additive reward used in conventional RL approaches. We have shown numerically that the method specifically overcomes the shortcomings typically associated with conventional solutions, including, but not limited to, component aging, modeling errors, and inaccuracies in the estimation of wind speed patterns. Our results show that the proposed method is especially successful in capturing power from wind transients;by modulating the generator load and hence the rotor torque load, so that the rotor tip speed quickly reaches the optimum value for the anticipated wind speed. This ratio of rotor tip speed to wind speed is known to be critical in wind power applications. The wind to load energy efficiency of the proposed method was shown to be superior to two other methods;the classical maximum power point tracking method and a generator controlled by deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) method. © 2022, CC BY-NC-ND.
