The mechanical behavior of a reinforced polylactic material with perolera pineapple fiber study is presented in order to determine its potential as an alternative industrial input material. First, the necessary information about the lactic acid production with biodegradable materials and materials reinforced with natural fibers was collected;secondly, the procedure to be followed to generate the raw material with which the composite material was developed was defined. Thirdly, the material testing experimental design reinforced with perolera pineapple fiber was made;and finally, the stress tests were carried out on the already reinforced composite material to know its mechanical properties and determine its behavior. The results obtained allow a behavior comparison of tensile resistance of PLA and PLA reinforced with pineapple fiber. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The 2004 Aceh tsunami triggered by a major earthquake taught us the importance of disaster mitigation efforts, one of which is monitoring seismic activity using earthquake sensors. However, the success of these sensors is highly dependent on community involvement, awareness, and active maintenance of the technology. This study aims to examine the perceptions of the Acehnese community regarding earthquake sensors and to identify factors that influence their perceptions of this disaster mitigation technology. The study was conducted in six districts in Aceh Province: Aceh Besar, Aceh Selatan, Aceh Singkil, Aceh Utara, Lhokseumawe, and Aceh Tengah, which were selected due to their high seismic activity and the installation of existing earthquake sensors. The study involved 112 respondents who completed a questionnaire to assess their knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes toward sensors. A One Sample T-Test was used to assess each factor influenced perceptions. The study showed that experience was the most influential factor in shaping perceptions, indicating that individuals directly involved in installing the sensors were more likely to appreciate their benefits. This study emphasizes the importance of more targeted educational campaign efforts that emphasize the role and importance of earthquake sensors in reducing earthquake risk and bridging the gap in public understanding of earthquake sensors. By directly involving the community in installing or maintaining earthquake sensors, it can improve their perception and increase the effectiveness of disaster preparedness strategies. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

The presence of surfactant waste in the aquatic environment contributes to environmental problems. In this study, the adsorption that uses magadiite and carbon from rice husk ash via the microwave irradiation method and is composited with magnetite was proposed. The composite magadiite-magnetite (MM) and carbon-magnetite (CM) were obtained by co-precipitation methods by intercalation and impregnation. MM and CM were evaluated as adsorbents for the removal of the anionic surfactant linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LABS). The obtained material was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), N₂ adsorption by Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) method, and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The influence of contact time, initial concentration, temperature, pH, and adsorbent dose on the adsorption process was investigated. The adsorption kinetics of LABS onto MM and CM followed the pseudo-second-order model and the equilibrium data fitted well to the monolayer Langmuir model as confirmed by the calculated values of R². The adsorption capacity for LABS on MM and CM is 129.00 and 91.77 mg g⁻¹, respectively. The thermodynamic study exhibited that those adsorptions occurred spontaneously with a predominance of chemisorption. MM and CM could be utilized as effective adsorbents with retrieval ability for removing anionic surfactant pollutants in aquatic environments. © 2025 The Authors

Despite its relevance for copying with water scarcity in cities, wastewater reuse aches from the complexity and trade-offs of its implementation. Therefore, holistic evaluation methods are necessary to assess its potential, constrains, and socio-ecological impacts. In this study, wastewater reuse sustainability was assessed from a social metabolism perspective, and with a focus to a case study in South-Central Chile. An analysis that joints Material Flow accounting and Multiscale Integrated Assessment of Societal and Ecological Metabolism (MuSIASEM) tool was performed for several cities. Indicators of water use and performance were calculated, and the feasibility, viability and desirability of different reuse strategies was *** results reveal the pattern of water use at different levels, highlighting the potential of wastewater reuse to improve urban self-sufficiency, replace water in relevant economic activities at the regional level, and avoid the environmental impacts of wastewater discharge. However, effluent quality and the fluctuations observed in wastewater flow limit the viability of some alternatives. Furthermore, reuse was socially accepted only when contact with water is reduced. The proposed framework integrated relevant issues of wastewater reuse, representing a useful tool that can be complemented with in-depth assessments of critical problems. © 2023, The Authors. The research shows the development process of a 3 m2 flat solar collector, composed of three modules of 1 m2 each, with labyrinth trap geometry, turbulence ridges and thermal energy storage tanks, the latter using different types of phase change materials (PCM), specifically two types of paraffins with melting points in the range of 48 to 58 ℃. Additionally, one of its modules filled with motor oil. During the first phase, a bibliometric exploration methodology is carried out with VOSviewer Software, identifying prominent technologies in the subject, which allows the design and simulation of a prototype using CAD Software. Subsequently, when implementing it, an analysis of the behavior of the vacuum collector with respect to the use of thermal energy storage is carried out, identifying the advantages in the use of PCM. Among the results, a working power close to 450 W and an approximate efficiency of 25% stand out, contrasting with the simulation, the importance of PCMs in increasing the efficiency of these devices used in different applications is concluded. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The use of deep learning in medical image classification has become an important study in the past few years. The proper use of this method, however, is still hindered by many problems, one of it being the imbalance of dataset available for training which resulted in small-set database. In this study, the effect of noise-based augmentation on the performance of deep learning based classification will be studied. The noises which were used for the augmentation method were Perlin-noise and Gaussian noise. The modality of medical image used in this study is X-ray. 174 X-ray images (87 cancer, 87 normal) were used in this study and will be classified by using transfer learning from previously trained deep learning architecture. The deep learning architecture used was vgg-19. The images were divided into two groups, 138 (69 cancer, 69 normal) images were used for training phase and 36 (18 cancer, 18 normal) were images used for testing phase. Three deep learning models were used for the classification tasks, the first one was retrained to classify the original images, the second one was retrained by using mix of original images and images with Perlin-noise, and the third one was retrained by using mix of original images and images with Gaussian noise. The results showed that the three models returned similar accuracy of 0.8 which indicate that the use of noise-based augmentation can increase the performance of deep learning in classifying medical images with small set training database. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Biodiversity values frequently encounter challenges from developmental needs despite having strong forest and wildlife laws in developing countries like India. Landscape ecology offers the relevant scientific backstopping and sophisticated tools to support conservation of several species. To aid the future development of landscape ecology in India within current and emerging contexts, we reviewed the spatio-temporal and thematic trends in the published research involving forest and wildlife conservation. Spatial modelling and land use land cover change assessments have been well established conceptually and methodologically, but an increase in studies involving impact of climate change on species habitat suitability is comparatively very recent. Thematic research gaps in this field include impact of scale on ecological processes, and uncertainty and error quantification in modelling. Dedicated studies on characterisation of biodiversity and its dynamics in biogeographic transition zones can scientifically inform management of forest and wildlife. The review of 494 peer-reviewed articles published between 1994 and 2021 showed an increase in published research on landscape ecology over time. We found that the studies were dominated by the ‘Pattern–Process–Scale’ related questions and spatially clustered in the Western Ghats (biodiversity hotspot) and Uttarakhand state. Considerable research efforts are required in riverine and coastal ecosystems. Nevertheless, the increasing trend of research across themes and regions is a positive indicator of the growing role of landscape ecology in forest and wildlife management in India.

An integrated biophysical-ecological assessment of embedded virtual water flows linked to Israel's consumption of agricultural crops

As populations and affluence grows, increased demand for food drives a concomitant increase in associated water scarcity. A relative and absolute increase in crop-embodied virtual water traded between countries is a geopolitically important component of this scarcity. In addition to biophysical dimensions, blue water consumption can have varying impacts on humans and biodiversity. This study focuses on virtual water trade relating to consumption of crops and crop products, and its related socio-ecological impacts, in a water scarce country with high reliance on virtual water, Israel. The results of two established methodologies are assessed, in calculating consumption associated with the virtual water trade of up to 100 crops. Using virtual water quantifications from the methodology with higher spatial resolution, together with two complementary sets of characterisation factors from life cycle impact assessment methodologies (water scarcity indices and potential disappeared fractions) a novel comparison of impacts on ecosystems relating to loss of species and water denial is facilitated. As an additional impact indicator, groundwater depletion is calculated for the virtual water trade of a narrower set of crops. Israel's crop production was found to be associated with outsized cumulative blue water consumption volumes, relative to imports. In addition, regional and country hotspots of blue water consumption, groundwater depletion, downstream user impact and biodiversity loss were identified, including in India, The United States, and the Mediterranean region. Several limitations and suggestions for future application are discussed. © 2024 The Authors

This paper is on the automated driving architecture and operation of a light commercial vehicle. Simple longitudinal and lateral dynamic models of the vehicle and a more detailed CarSim model are developed and used in simulations and controller design and evaluation. Experimental validation is used to make sure that the models used represent the actual response of the vehicle as closely as possible. The vehicle is made drive-by-wire by interfacing with the existing throttle-by-wire, by adding an active vacuum booster for brake-by-wire and by adding a steering actuator for steer-by-wire operation. Vehicle localization is achieved by using a GPS sensor integrated with six axes IMU with a built-in INS algorithm and a digital compass for heading information. Front looking radar, lidar and camera are used for environmental sensing. Communication with the road infrastructure and other vehicles is made possible by a vehicle to vehicle communication modem. A dedicated computer under real time Linux is used to collect, process and distribute sensor information. A dSPACE MicroAutoBox is used for drive-by-wire controls. CACC based longitudinal control and path tracking of a map of GPS waypoints are used to present the operation of this automated driving vehicle. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

We have investigated the effect of amino acid environment on the nucleobase-centered anionic shape resonances in RNA by employing uracil as a model system. Uracil-glycine complexes have been used to model the RNA-protein interactions, and with glycine to model the proximity of amino acid residues to RNA nucleobases. The resonance positions and widths of the complexes have been simulated using the equation of motion coupled cluster method coupled with resonance via Padé approach. The amino acid stabilizes the nucleobase-centered resonances through hydrogen bonding, increasing their lifetime. At the same time, the amino acid-centered resonances strongly couple with the nucleobase-centered resonances, thereby scavenging the electron density away from the nucleobase. At the micro-solvation level, amino acids have a greater influence on nucleobase-centered resonances than that displayed by the aqueous environment. © 2025, CC BY.
