State-of-charge is an important variable in a battery management system. However, it cannot be measured directly from a battery. Instead, it is estimated from measurable variables like current and voltage. This paper addresses a discrete-time observer-based SOC estimation such that it has an asymptotic stability guarantee with some assumptions. The second-order equivalent circuit model and a piecewise linear approximation representing a relationship between the state-of-charge and the open circuit voltage are utilized. Simulations are conducted in Python to evaluate the designed observer. Some simulation scenarios also include the appearance of the model uncertainty, disturbance, and measurement noise. The estimated state-of-charge can track the real one for these situations, despite performance degradation.

This study aimed to submit the albino peach palm to the cooking and drying processes, and characterize the raw pulp (RP), cooked pulp (CP), raw pulp flour (RPF), and cooked pulp flour (CPF). The product's chemical composition, bioactive compounds, and physical-chemical, color, thermal, morphological, and functional-technological properties were evaluated. The proximate composition showed that carbohydrates were the main constituents of all products. The cooking process increased the moisture content of the pulp but decreased its other contents. The colorimetric parameters indicated a significant browning. After cooking, the total phenolic compounds and ascorbic acid content decreased in the pulp. The RPF and CPF presented different thermogravimetric behaviors. The spectral patterns in the infrared region showed characteristic bands of organic compounds which are present in the structure of starches. Scanning electron microscopy showed amyloplast and fiber bundles with starches in the RP and gelatinized starch granules in the CP and CPF. The RPF presented small and heterogeneous starch granules with isolated amyloplast. The RPF and CPF showed different granulometric patterns and technological indices. The results indicated that pulp and flour from the pulp of albino peach palms can be exploited by the food, pharmaceutical, and biotechnological industries. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The synthesis of highly stable small mesoporous silica nanoparticles (SMSN) in colloid dispersions is still challenging for biomedical applications. This study is focus on the successfully synthesis and formulation of porous, highly dispersed and colloidal stable SMSN via the soft–templating method. This study reports how the differences in synthesis variables, namely, temperature, amount of triethylamine (TEA) and/or cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) influence the morphology and textural properties of SMSN. The analysis of the particle size, surface area, pore size, pore volume, zeta potential, and colloidal stability (represent by absorbance decreasing rate) show that temperature is the most influential factor governing the preparation of SMSN. The optimal conditions found for the synthesis of these nanoparticles were 50 °C, using a molar ratio between TEA and CTAB (3.5971: 1). Therefore, our study shows interesting insights on the effect of each variable to control the morphology and properties of small MSN for the design of this kind of nanoparticulated systems, therefore, giving valuable data to be considered for the future construction of tailor-made effective drug carrier materials. © 2023 The Society of Powder Technology Japan

Interactions between groundwater and surface water sustain groundwater-dependent ecosystems, provide baseflow to rivers, and regulate river temperature and biogeochemical cycles, amongst many other processes. These interactions occur in freshwater environments including rivers, springs, lakes, and wetlands, and in coastal environments via tidal pumping, submarine groundwater discharge, and seawater intrusion. Here, we use a data-driven approach to explore groundwater-surface water interactions research using 20,275 journal papers published between 1970 and 2023. Analyses show that research into groundwater-surface water interactions is highly multi-disciplinary, with growing contributions from the social and biological sciences. As in the case with many research areas, the number of groundwater-surface water interactions papers is rapidly increasing with over 1200 papers published per year since 2020. Drawing on our data-driven approach and expert knowledge, we synthesise current research trends and identify critical future research directions. Despite the thousands of papers on groundwater-surface water interactions, there are still important processes that are difficult to quantify or predict at meaningful spatial scales to inform management. We see benefits in future groundwater-surface water interactions research focusing on: (1) embracing new technologies including the use of internet-of-things-based sensors and further use of uncrewed vehicles in data capture and remote sensing approaches to inform groundwater-surface water interactions at large scales, (2) capitalising on the increased computational power, availability of physically based models, and machine learning to inform hydrological and biogeochemical processes, and (3) continuing the movement towards multi-disciplinary investigations to better inform the quantification of groundwater-surface water interactions that will enable better management outcomes. © 2024, The Authors. The chili management practices can influence the predatory arthropod community. This study aimed to identify soil arthropod species and examine their abundance in different chili management practices in freshwater swamps of South Sumatra. The survey was conducted in three types of chili field, first without mulch and synthetic insecticides, and by fertilizing using manure (EF). The Conventional 1 (C-1) used plastic mulch, synthetic fertilizers, and synthetic insecticides. The Conventional 2 (C-2) used insecticides and synthetic fertilizers but without mulch. The total of all soil arthropod species was found in the different chili management practices of 24 species originating from Insecta, Arachnida, and Diplopoda. The highest number of soil arthropod species was found in EF, while the least number was found in C-1. This survey found species of predatory mites (Macrocheles dispar), spiders (Pardosa birmanica), and predatory insects (Coccinella transversalis) and other important predators such as Pheropsophus occipitalis and Pardosa pseudoannulata. The abundance of soil arthropods either predators, herbivores or neutral insects was the highest in EF, while the lowest one was in the C-1. Overall, different chili management practices affected the number of species and abundance of soil arthropods;the environmentally friendly plot has the highest number of species and the largest abundance. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

High-quality fluorescence imaging of biological systems is limited by processes like photobleaching and phototoxicity, and also in many cases, by limited access to the latest generations of microscopes. Moreover, low temporal resolution can lead to a motion blur effect in living systems. Our work presents a deep learning (DL) generative-adversarial approach to the problem of obtaining high-quality (HQ) images based on their low-quality (LQ) equivalents. We propose a generative-adversarial network (GAN) for contrast transfer between two different separate microscopy systems: a confocal microscope (producing HQ images) and a wide-field fluorescence microscope (producing LQ images). Our model proves that such transfer is possible, allowing us to receive HQ-generated images characterized by low mean squared error (MSE) values, high structural similarity index (SSIM), and high peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) values. For our best model in the case of comparing HQ-generated images and HQ-ground truth images, the median values of the metrics are 6·10-4, 0.9413, and 31.87, for MSE, SSIM, and PSNR, respectively. In contrast, in the case of comparison between LQ and HQ ground truth median values of the metrics are equal to 0.0071, 0.8304, and 21.48 for MSE, SSIM, and PSNR respectively. Therefore, we observe a significant increase ranging from 14% to 49% for SSIM and PSNR respectively. These results, together with other single-system cross-modality studies, provide proof of concept for further implementation of a cross-system biological image quality enhancement. © 2024, CC BY-SA.

Design and implementation of arrhythmic ECG signals for biomedical engineering applications on FPGA

In this study, eight arrhythmic ECG signals from vital signals [sinus tachycardia, supraventricular tachycardia, premature ventricular complex (PVC), atrial fibrillation, AV block: 3rd degree, ventricular fibrillation, sinus bradycardia, first-degree AV block] were designed mathematically, and then modelled on FPGA by VHDL and Xilinx-Vivado software. The mathematical extrapolation of the signals was created in accordance with the literature and after examining the time and amplitude values of many ECG signals from the Physiobank ATM section of the MIT-BIH (Massachusetts Institute of Technology-Beth Israel Hospital) arrhythmia database. These signals were synthesized for the Zynq-7000 XC7Z020 FPGA chip for using in biomedical calibration applications and ECG simulators. The ECG signals were modelled with a 14-bit AD9767 DAC module that worked in coherence with this development board, and observed in real-time by 4 channel oscilloscope. Matlab-based ECG signals were taken as reference and compared with the results obtained from the FPGA-based ECG signals design. The FPGA chip resource consumption values obtained after the place–route process, the test results obtained from the design, the MSE (mean squared error) values of the designed signals, the operating frequencies of the system and each signal have been presented. The maximum operating speed of this system is 651.827 MHz. In this study, it has been shown that FPGA-based ECG signal generation system can be implemented on FPGA chips, and the designed system can be safely used in ECG simulators.

Indonesia is earthquake and tsunami prone areas, included Sumatera Island. Bandar Lampung is also vulnerable to earthquake and tsunami, especially Kangkung fishing village in Lampung Bay. Disaster risk reduction is very important to be implemented in the cases of earthquake and tsunami, which can save more life and build resilience in facing the hazard. This research aimed to study how the knowledge, awareness, and resilience of people in Kangkung fishing village can strengthen the earthquake and tsunami disaster risk reduction. This research conducted by quantitative methods. Survey and interview of 53 respondents were conducted as well as data collecting approached by purposive sampling. The results found that there is little knowledge and awareness of people in Kangkung fishing village of the hazard of earthquake and tsunami. Therefore, this research proposed a model of "Community-Based Resilience Strategy"Model of earthquake and tsunami disaster risk reduction. It is a comprehensive and sustainable model of how people take a part in disaster risk reduction by intensive participatory. Conclusion of this research emphasized that disaster risk reduction is a big matter in marginalized society such as people in Kangkung fishing village. The "Community-Based Resilience Strategy"Model of earthquake and tsunami disaster risk reduction that may increase the knowledge and awareness to become more resilience. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Over hundreds of years, cats have been domesticated and selectively bred, resulting in numerous pedigreed breeds expedited by recent cat shows and breeding associations. Concerns have been raised about the limited breeding options and the genetic implications of inbreeding, indicating challenges in maintaining genetic diversity and accurate identification in purebred cats. In this study, genetic variability and structure were examined in 5 Thai domestic cat breeds using 15 microsatellite markers and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) D-loop sequencing. In total, 184 samples representing the Wichien Maat (WCM), Suphalak (SL), Khao-Manee (KM), Korat (KR), and Konja (KJ) breeds were analyzed. High genetic diversity (H_o and H_e > 0.5) was observed in all breeds, and mtDNA analysis revealed two primary haplogroups (A and B) that were shared among all domestic cat breeds in Thailand and globally. However, minor differences were observed between Thai domestic cat breeds based on clustering analyses, in which a distinct genetic structure was observed in the WCM breed. This suggests that allele fixation for distinctive morphological traits has occurred in Thai domestic cat breeds that emerged in isolated regions with shared racial origins. Analysis of relationships among individuals within the breed revealed high identification efficiency in Thai domestic cat breeds (P_(ID)sibs < 10⁻⁴). Additionally, diverse and effective individual identification can be ensured by optimizing marker efficiency by using only nine loci. This comprehensive genetic characterization provides valuable insights into conservation strategies and breeding practices for Thai domestic cat breeds. © The Author(s) 2024.
