Integrating wind turbines into high-rise buildings can generate on-site renewable energy. Through-building openings can effectively increase the utilization of wind energy in high-rise buildings. However, current research on wind energy potential within these openings is limited to conventional wind conditions. Meteorological observations indicate that cities near mountainous terrain, such as Hong Kong and Tokyo, often experience twisted wind flows due to topography. These wind flows cause changes in the wind direction angle with increasing vertical height, and previous studies have demonstrated significant differences in flow fields around high-rise buildings in twisted wind fields as compared to conventional wind fields. Consequently, the wind energy potential within through-building openings of high-rise buildings may be significantly impacted by twisted winds. This paper applies high-fidelity methods (LES) to evaluate the wind energy potential within through-building openings of buildings with different heights under twisted wind field conditions, and compares the results with those obtained under conventional wind conditions. The results show that the passage near the inflow experiences higher wind speed and wind power compared to the passage far from the inflow under the twisted wind profile. The twisted wind flows cause an increase in local wind power density within the through-building openings, but it also results in an elevation of turbulence intensity, which is unfavorable for enhancing the efficiency of wind turbines. Furthermore, the degree of enhancement in local wind power and local turbulence intensity within the through-building openings gradually intensifies as the wind twisted angle increases. © 2023, The Authors. Indoor temperature prediction as an essential reference for HVAC system tuning has boomed in recent years, with the development of information technology. But for data-driven techniques, inputs as key factors in prediction accuracy, learning efficiency and generalization capacity, did not pay enough attention. Existing research focused only on prediction accuracy by copying previous practices in other fields like medicine and hydrology, without considering prediction horizons and economic costs, which is meaningless and even may mislead the configuration of the monitoring system, especially for large-space buildings with long-span space, diverse zones and coupling parameters. In this work, we developed a novel hybrid feature selection technique for indoor temperature prediction. Herein, transfer entropy (TE) was introduced into filter to evaluate importance of features, where Max-min TE as a gauge was defined to cope with time delays in HVAC system;Then gated recurrent network was taken in wrapper as a bridge to transform evaluations in filter into contributions to prediction;Lastly, life cycle cost was employed as a referee to judge cost-efficient alternatives. The proposed technique was validated by time-series data collected from a library and system energy consumption baseline simulated with TRNSYS to suggest optimal feature subsets under different prediction horizons. © 2023, The Authors. Experimental design for FRP-concrete interface bond behavior under blast loads

To enhance the numerical simulation efficiency of FRP-concrete beam components under blast loads, a meso-scale numerical simulation scheme for FRP-concrete joints under blast is proposed. Based on the failure modes and bond-slip behavior of FRP-concrete interface for different FRP-concrete joints under various loading conditions in previous research, a modified configuration and dimension of FRP-concrete bending joint under blast is designed. The joint consists of two concrete beams with dimensions of 500 mm in length, 100 mm in width, and 150 mm in height, with a compressive strength of 54. 4 MPa. The beams are hinged at the bottom, and a GFRP plate with an elastic modulus of 30 GPa, dimensions of 450 mm in length, 100 mm in width, and 3. 0 mm in thickness, is bonded to the top surface of the concrete specimen. Employing the modified FRP-concrete bending joint, and under the condition of scaled distance Z≥1. 2 m/ kg1/ 3 and distance span ratio a≥0. 5, the actual stress range of the FRP at an interface debonding failure mode similar to intermediate crack-induced debonding (IC Debonding) is [180. 1, 583. 3] MPa. Pressure-impulse(P-I) curve and empirical formula of P,I, explosive equivalent weight W, explosion distance R, and scaled distance Z for the modified FRP-concrete bending joint under blast of which the length is 1. 0 m in longitudinal direction are proposed, which can be used for numerical simulation of FRP-concrete beam components under explosive loading conditions. © 2024 Science Press. The Influence of Carbon Nanotubes and Nano-Silica Fume on Enhancing the Damping and Mechanical Properties of Cement-Based Materials

This paper conducted experimental studies on the damping and mechanical properties of carbon nanotube-nanosilica-cement composite materials with different carbon nanotube contents. The damping and mechanical properties enhancement mechanisms were analyzed and compared through the porosity structure test, XRD analysis, and scanning electron microscope observation. The results show that the introduction of nanosilica significantly improves the dispersion of carbon nanotubes in the cement matrix. At the same time, the addition of nanosilica not only effectively reduces the critical pore size and average pore size of the cement composite material, but also exhibits good synergistic effects with carbon nanotubes, which can significantly optimize the pore structure. Finally, a rationalization suggestion for the co-doping of nanosilica and carbon nanotubes was given to achieve a significant increase in the flexural strength, compressive strength and loss factor of cement-based materials.

This study undertakes a comprehensive investigation to explore strategies for replacing current dielectric liquid understanding in transformers. Understanding existing literature fosters creativity and effective research responses. The review process incorporates data and text analysis. Statistical data from 1978 to 2022 is used to understand prevailing techniques, drawn from an analysis of 80+ research publications. Contributions include Ageing 34 %, blending 20 %, additive addition 17 %, modification 8 %, gas analysis 5 %, critical dielectric testing 5 %, case studies 2 %, and others 8 %. The discussion includes 16 exclusive review papers, highlighting contributions to mixed dielectrics, nanofluids, testing manuals, modifications, and alternative fluids. This advanced study integrates materials, techniques, and standards to explore dielectric liquids, supported by accessible research journal data. The paper provides crucial data for future research. © 2024 IEEE.

This study presents a six-construct employability skills model for built environment graduates in the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). The model examines the influence of generic skills, discipline-specific skills, work-integrated learning, emotional intelligence, university-industry collaboration and 4IR knowledge on graduate employability. A mixed-method approach was employed, including the Delphi technique for qualitative analysis and a well-structured questionnaire for quantitative analysis. The findings highlight the significant impact of work-integrated learning on improved employability, while also revealing the direct influence of other exogenous variables. Notably, discipline-specific skills showed a weaker influence. This research contributes to the field by presenting a tailored employability skills model for built environment graduates, addressing the sector’s unique challenges in the 4IR era. The study also offers practical implications for stakeholders involved in employability skills development. Overall, this study provides a substantive contribution to the research area of engineering education and graduate employability in the context of 4IR. In an ever-evolving job market shaped by technological advancements, this study underscores the importance of equipping built environment graduates with a diverse set of skills and knowledge to thrive in the dynamic landscape of the 4IR. © 2024 Associated Schools of Construction.

Many geospatial applications rely on the extraction of spatial features, including road networks, from very high-resolution (VHR) satellite images. Researchers have developed many algorithms to achieve this goal, the majority of which are based on image fusion, fuzzy logic, and active contour models. The snake model is among the most widely used methods for road extraction by active contours. In most studies, an initial curve close to available roads is manually defined or based on prior knowledge. These methods also require manual adjustment of the snake model parameters, which is time-consuming. In order to address these limitations, this study proposes an algorithm for extracting roads from VHR satellite images in a semi-urban area that optimizes snake models by Honey-Bee Mating Optimization (HBMO). Based on a support vector machine and some image processing analysis, the presented method can extract an accurate initial curve, as well. According to the results of the experiments, the proposed approach not only eliminates the shortcomings of the snake model but also increases the accuracy of road extraction by 10% in all three study areas compared to the traditional snake method. © 2022 IEEE.

Aging infrastructure in the Netherlands presents a significant challenge, particularly with precast girder bridges made continuous, which exhibit inadequate shear reinforcement per current design codes. To address shear capacity and accuracy of current assessment practices, a research program including fullscale shear tests is underway at Delft University of technology. As a part of the research, a blind prediction contest with two specimens has been organized. The experiments showed that the loss of composite action at the interface is the primary failure mechanism, and generally an accurate model of the interface behaviour in such composite members is missing. In this paper, a further review of the available interface models and previous tests is conducted. This review leads to the challenges in the accurate evaluation of the interface behaviour, as well as the next steps to address them: a new set of full-scale specimens, and a small-scale test setup reflecting a realistic stress distribution. © Fédération Internationale du Béton–International Federation for Structural Concrete.
