A theoretical model is presented for the pull-out response of strip anchor reinforcement based on a nonlinear elastic (hyperbolic) shear stress-displacement relationship for the soil-reinforcement interface. The interface pull-out mechanism has been simplified by formulating the boundary conditions for the anchor section. Additional terms for the soil-reinforcement interaction, which incorporate the anchor section, are also introduced. A new concept of an anchorage factor (anchor-to-strip reinforcement capacities), the relative stiffness, and the displacement parameters are defined to explain the pull-out behaviour. A parametric study is carried out for a range of relative stiffness values, interface shear stresses, and anchorage factors. The normalised load-displacement relationship and the variations of pull-out force and displacements with distance along the reinforcement, at different anchorage factors, are presented. Experimental pull-out test results for planar reinforcements are also examined/compared with the model using a zero anchorage factor. The model helps to evaluate the pull-out displacements, stresses, and strains along the length of the strip anchor reinforcement.

The first stage in the development of a fuzzy controller for active control of vibration in a wind excited tall structure is reported. The initial rule base of the fuzzy controller is developed based on the input/output data obtained from the performance of the system under a state feedback controller. The performance of the developed controller is validated through computer simulation. The controller is applied to both the building model from which the rule base is extracted and another building with similar dynamics but different parameters. The developed controller has significantly outperformed a state feedback controller and a previously developed intuitive fuzzy controller in terms of the maximum required control force. The amplitude of the steady state oscillation produced by the state feedback controller has, however, proved to be marginally better than the other two controllers.

In the Netherlands, interest in utilization of underground space has been increasing over the past decade. To examine the potential for subsurface space use, a national "Strategic Study on the Utilization of Underground Space" was carried out by the Centre for Underground Construction (Centrum Ondergronds Bouwen, COB) and Delft University of technology (TUD), on the initiative of the National Physical Planning Service (Rijksplanologische Dienst, RPD) of the Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment. The paper describes the objectives of the study, the characteristics of underground space use in the Netherlands, positive and negative influences on the potential use of such space, and conclusions of the Strategic Study, including likely prospective applications of subsurface space in the Netherlands. This book presents a detailed analysis in relation to pollutant processes and transport pathways encompassing atmospheric pollutants, atmospheric deposition and build-up on road surfaces of traffic generated key pollutants. The research study undertaken by the authors created extensive knowledge relating to the relevant processes and establishing their relationships as a chain of processes. The information presented in this book was derived based on comprehensive experimental investigations including field sampling, laboratory testing, mathematical modelling and multivariate and univariate statistical data analyses. The knowledge presented will be of particular interest to readers such as stormwater treatment design specialists, decision-makers and urban planners since these outcomes provide practical suggestions and recommendations to effective urban stormwater treatment design.

This book expands the body of scientific knowledge on research and solutions for alternative water systems. It addresses a wide variety of water management issues in buildings, ranging from the technical possibilities, hydraulic and financial efficiency, and public acceptance of decentralized water systems, to their impact on sewage systems. Climate changes, population growth, and progressive urbanization are the main causes of the growing interest in alternative sources of water around the world. Decentralized systems are seen not only as solutions that can effectively save water, but also as systems that can operate partially or completely independently of centralized suppliers. With these aspects in mind, the main focus of this book is on showcasing a new approach to water management at the building scale. The findings and insights presented here will support the development of future technical guidelines for using alternative water systems in urban areas – an aspect that is particularly important since, in many European countries, these systems are only very rarely used.
