Kartini reactor in Yogyakarta is a nuclear reactor with a low thermal power of 100 kW that is mainly used for education, training, and research. For that purpose, measuring neutron flux and controlling the power are important operational parameters. The Fission Chamber (FC) type of detector is the main component in the reactor operation and safety system that measures the neutron flux in the outer reactor core. As the FC detector is placed in a fixed location, a numerical calculation model is needed to know the neutron flux in all outer core regions. In this study, the MCNPX code is used. The first step is to validate the model with experimental measurement. The objective of the present study is to obtain a validated model by comparing calculations using MCNPX with measurements using gold foil activation (Neutron Activation Analysis technique). The computational model tested showed promising results with an average difference compared to the gold foil activation method of about 23%. Further research can be done using more gold foil samples or foils from other materials to see the consistency of measurements or minimize the measurement difference. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Strengthening effect of graphene oxide on mechanical properties of interface transition zone of recycled concrete

The micro-mechanical properties and micro-structural characteristics of the interfacial transition zones of recycled concrete with graphene oxide were studied using nano-indentor. The results showed that the average elastic modulus and width of the interfacial transition zone of recycled concrete with graphene oxide between new paste matrix and natural aggregate were approximately 20GPa and 30-35μm respectively. The mean elastic modulus and transition zone width of the interfacial transition zone between the new paste matrix and old paste matrix were approximately 35GPa and 25-30μm, respectively. By analyzing and calculating the probability distribution of hydration products, it was found that the graphene oxide template increased the proportion of calcium silicate hydrate in the hydrate and enhanced the content of calcium hydroxide crystal group. When compared with ordinary recycled concrete, the elastic modulus distribution in the interfacial transition zone was more uniform and the microstructure was more stable. It can be concluded that graphene oxide can enhance the mechanical properties and microstructure of the interfacial transition zone of recycled concrete so as to improve the macroscopic mechanical properties of recycled concrete. © 2020 Trans Tech Publications Ltd, Switzerland.

This research studied the effect of increasing the strength of concrete surfaces by using concrete surface polishing with a lithium silicate coating. The abrasion resistance and resistance to sulfuric acid attack of concrete were studied. The performance of 4 concrete surfaces viz., untreated surface, a surface coated with lithium silicate, a polished surface without lithium silicate, and a polished surface with lithium silicate. In addition, the effect of lithium silicate contents was studied. The mechanical properties of the concrete after the treatments for 120 days were tested. The results showed that the concrete polished surface with a lithium silicate coating had significant increases in abrasion resistance and resistance to sulfuric acid attack. The increases in resistance increased with the amount of lithium silicate and the strength of the concrete. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In order to effectively alleviate the stress concentration phenomenon of the inner-cone bond type anchorages and improve the ultimate anchoring capacity of the anchorages, a new kind of arcuate-cone bond type anchorage for carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendons was designed. The stress distribution curves, load-slip curves and failure modes of anchorages are obtained by tension test of a group of innner cone and arcuate cone anchors with different parameters. According to the test results, the influence of anchorage types, inclination angles and radius of arc on anchorage performance is analyzed. The results show that ultimate anchoring capacity is directly proportional to the slip between anchor cup and grout during loading. The slip of arcuate cone anchorage is larger than that of inner-cone anchorage, and the anchor with smaller inclination angles of anchor cup slips larger. The ultimate anchoring capacity of the novel arcuate cone bond-type anchorages is larger than that of the traditional inner cone anchorages, and the phenomenon of stress concentration on the surface of CFRP tendons is effectively alleviated by using arcuate cone anchorages. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Building response during nearby excavation activities (e.g., tunnelling or deep excavations) is traditionally monitored by conducting displacement measurements. These displacement data are then post-processed to determine proxy measures that are correlated to damage categories. For masonry buildings, commonly-used proxy measures include building deflection ratio, horizontal relative displacement and angular distortion;simple mechanical models and empirical rules are used to define limiting values for these proxy measures to identify and control the level of cracking in buildings during construction. This procedure has a profound influence on mitigation and construction activities, and a critical evaluation of its veracity is needed. To this end, results from a recent experimental campaign on the settlement response of half-scale masonry buildings are examined in this paper. During these tests, detailed optical measurements were conducted, allowing the calculation of absolute displacements across the façade, as well as crack opening displacements at specific locations. These measurements facilitate a direct comparison between the actual observed damage and the damage category that is indicated by the proxy measures. The comparisons highlight the limitations of existing techniques. A discussion is provided on how proxy measure calculations can be improved to deliver more reliable indications of building damage. © 2022 the Author(s).

The insights of this study are implemented in a mathematical model with practical applications in industry, where they improve heat transport and minimize energy usage. The influence of the form factor on the radiative characteristics of a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) pair stress hybrid nanofluid on a contracting surface is analyzed, along with the stability of the system as a whole. Enhancing the heat transfer ratio is the primary objective of this research because of its importance in the engineering and industrial fields. Nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) are formulated as a means of approaching the issue by taking into account the conservation principles of momentum and energy. Using a similarity transformation and thermophysical features, these PDEs are converted into ODEs. The resultant ODEs are solved using the approximate analytical approach known as Homotopy Analysis approach (HAM). The consequence of the relevant parameters, including couple stress parameter, magnetic field parameter, velocity ratio parameter, Prandtl number and Eckert number, on temperature distribution, Nusselt's number, velocity profile, and the skin friction are interrogated with the help of graphical representation. The velocity filed decreases with the increasing value of couple stress parameter, magnetic field parameter, and velocity ratio parameter. The temperature filed is increasing with the increasing value of Eckert number. The authors examine the convergence and stability of the problem using tables, graphs, and a dual solution strategy. In light of the significant difficulty encountered in heat transfer applications for cooling equipment and devices across a wide range of industries including automotive, microelectronics, defense, and manufacturing, this theoretical approach aims to positively contribute towards improving the heat transfer ratio to meet the demands of these sectors. © 2023 The Authors

The Internet of Things (IoT) as a technology and its adaptation into mainstreams by various governments across the globe has set developmental pace for many new innovations in IoT. IoTs are transforming cities across globe in the form of ensuring healthcare, understanding traffic, building better and efficient services in the form of delivery in various sectors like energy, water and sanitation etc while improving quality of life and to establish the smart city. This paper place aims to understand some of these technologies and how it can be adopted as technology into the Sub-Sharan African region with a focus on Botswana to make a smart city. To explore the change rule of the temperature field and stress field for wind turbine extended foundation, this paper is based on the actual construction conditions of a wind farm in eastern China, and considers the creep of concrete. Based on the UPFs of ANSYS, the temperature field and temperature stress of the wind turbine extended foundation are simulated and calculated in the whole process. The calculation results show that the maximum temperature and maximum stress occur in the center of the wind turbine foundation;after the temperature of each part of the foundation drops to quasi-stable, the temperature field and the temperature stress field will change periodically with the air temperature;although the surface stress has a small value, the maximum surface stress occurs in the early stage when the concrete is not fully developed, and there is still a possibility of cracks on the surface of the foundation. Through analysis, it is found that the internal and external temperature difference of the surface part is the reason for the surface stress;the temperature drop of the central part determines the maximum temperature stress of the foundation. Therefore, the temperature control of the wind turbine foundation can be performed by controlling the internal and external temperature difference and the temperature drop, which provides a reference for the temperature control and cracks prevention of the wind turbine foundation. © 2021 IEEE.

Internet of Things is a dynamic platform and involves data which in turn attracts cybersecurity threats. Numerous organisations are increasingly placing its focus towards understanding cyber risks in a dynamic and complex environment while also trying to quantify their exposure. This article focuses on addressing the assessment of cybersecurity threats in IoT and its vectors through a risk-based approach using machine learning algorithms while highlighting and discussing the traditional cyber risk assessment techniques at length. Built on the statistics analysis, it can be decided that the Bayesian algorithm performs in estimating the potential risks at 82% and in comparison, the CAQ model using J48 classifies at 94%. The Bayes algorithm also helps in quantifying the complex risks originating from different sources and helps in understanding how the risk factors emerge and connect in an IoT environment and what controls are required for mitigating them. © 2022 IEEE.

The expansion performance of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is experimentally studied, and the influence of expansion agent on the expansion performance of UHPC is analyzed. The results show that type FP expansive agent can significantly improve the expansion performance of UHPC in the early hardening stage (3 hours). Type II expansive agent can significantly improve the later expansion performance of UHPC (3 hours to 24 hours). The combination of the two can meet the expansion performance index of UHPC required by the project. The optimum content of type FP and type II expansive agent is 0.1% and 6% respectively. The research conclusions can provide basis for UHPC grouting construction. © 2021 IEEE.
