Model-Predictive-Control-Based Self-Powered Active Secondary Lateral Suspension of High-Speed Trains Using H-Bridge Circuit Electromagnetic Dampers with Vibration Control and Energy Harvesting Functions

The active suspension demonstrates superior control performance to its semiactive and passive counterparts, but the considerable power consumption has hindered its wider application. This paper aims to establish a self-powered active suspension to narrow the gap between active and semiactive suspensions in power and control performances. The previously (Li and Zhu, 2022) developed bidirectional H-bridge circuit-based electromagnetic damper (HB-EMD), which was experimentally validated to accomplish the self-powered active skyhook control of the SDOF isolation, was integrated into the secondary lateral suspension of the 17-DOFs high-speed train (HST) to achieve substantial vibration reduction while maintaining self-powering. Despite the success of self-powered active control of a single electromagnetic damper (EMD) in the SDOF/2-DOFs system, the self-powering of generic active controllers in the MDOFs system is still challenging. First, the self-powering condition of a single EMD is ambiguous. This paper clarifies it: the accumulated time-averaged harvested power (i.e., the control power minus resistor dissipation) absorbed from the plant must be positive while the instantaneous control power is bidirectional. Second, the self-powering condition has not been fully exploited in the active controller design before. The active linear quadratic (LQ) controllers cannot directly influence the harvested power since the resistor dissipation is excluded from its objective function. Third, the mechanical and electrical coupling and the force constraints by the circuit complicate the controller design. To address these issues, a novel model predictive controller (MPC) is proposed to optimize the objective function with the leveraged normalized vibration indices and harvested power incorporating resistor dissipation. The previously proposed H-bridge circuit based electromagnetic damper (HB-EMD) that allows bidirectional current flow and enables active vibration control was experimentally validated to achieve self-powered active skyhook control of the SDOF vibration isolator under harmonic excitation. The feasible self-powered active HB-EMD is promising in narrowing the gap between conventional active control with substantial energy consumption and the semiactive control with compromised control performance. However, its extension to the generic active control of multiple-degrees-of-freedom (MDOF) system under stochastic excitation has not been attempted before. The challenge lies in enabling an independent EMD to reach the self-powering condition: the long-term accumulated harvested power (i.e., the control power minus resistor dissipation) absorbed from the plant must be positive while allowing instantaneous bidirectional control power. The conventional active linear quadratic (LQ) controllers have difficulty reaching the self-powering condition if the controller or EMD parameters are not designed deliberately. Therefore, a novel model-predictive-controller (MPC) is proposed to fully exploit the self-powering condition of an experimentally calibrated EMD without a deliberate design. By establishing an [[EQUATION]] leveraged objective function consisting of the normalized vibration indices and harvested power incorporating resistor dissipation, MPC can transition from the vibration-reduction oriented control to the harvesting-power oriented control by adjusting [[EQUATION]]. To evaluate the proposed MPC efficiency, two separate HB-EMDs are implemented in the front and rear secondary lateral suspensions of the 17-DOF high-speed train (HST) subject to stochastic track irregularities to maximize the vibration mitigation of car body while maintaining energy harvesting for both EMDs in the long-term. Since much attention has been paid to the accuracy of prediction models in chiller plant, the practicality and feasibility of models are often compromised for superior performance. In this paper, a data-driven model and online predictive control strategy are presented for a typical chiller plant to optimize its overall performance and energy consumption from the perspective of real-time application. The model predictive controller is developed based on the multivariable linear regression (MLR) model. Meanwhile, the ordinary least squares (OLS) estimation technique was adopted to identified and update the model coefficients. The input variables of the developed model are the temperature difference of chilled water and the temperature difference of cooling water, which are much easier to obtain in a practical system compared to variables such as water flow and part load ratio, thereby rendering an excellent model capable of easy implementation and duplication. The MLR model-based online predictive control strategy is tested and evaluated in a real chiller plant system. The results of application indicate that the online predictive control strategy can enhance the global COP values by 6.52% on average and reduce electricity consumption by 2.45% daily compared to the local control strategy. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2020.

The process of the constructing and operating building energy consumption monitoring platforms (BECMPs) has last for more than a decade in China. In the meantime, a lot of problems occurred, such as data loss and data anomaly. However, there is lacking method to automatically measure the data quality of BECMPs. Most data problems can only be discovered by human checking, which is often delayed, and the severity is often unclear, resulting in restriction to further data utilization. Based on previous research on the causes of data loss and data anomaly, this paper put forward an index system to evaluate the data quality of BECMPs. The index system targets the data quality itself as well as the designing, constructing, debugging, operating and maintaining process of BECMPs, which enable the maintenance personnel to have a clear knowledge of the data quality and help them keep the system in an optimal state. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

To maximize the recovery of heat energy from bathing wastewater, a two-series-connected bathing wastewater source heat pump hot water unit (SCBWSHP) with large temperature difference was proposed. Its rated design parameters are: the inlet and outlet temperatures of the bathing wastewater are 30 °C and 6 °C, respectively. The tap water inlet temperature is 10 °C, and the hot water outlet temperature is 45 °C. The effects of the mass flow rate of the tap water and the bathing wastewater on heating performance of the SCBWSHP were investigated experimentally. The results showed that the COP of the whole unit is 4.5 at the ratings. When the tap water mass flow rate increases from 600 to 900 kg/h, the whole unit COP increased by 18.7%, from 3.20 to 4.88. And the COP of the whole unit increases from 4.03 to 4.83 as the bathing wastewater mass flow rate rises from 600 to 1000 kg/h, increased by 16%. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2020.

The posterior probability of the oil samples— mineral oil (MO), punga oil (PO), and modified punga oil (MPO)— are utilized in this study. The posterior probability of the oil samples is discovered using two classification techniques. Breakdown voltage (BDV), kinematic viscosity (KVIS), dielectric constant (DC), and moisture content were the dielectric parameters employed in this investigation (MC). The classification of clusters and visualization of their 2D interactive effect, visualization of the 3D decision surface at various clusters, examination of Gaussian mixture assumptions, the Q- Q plot, and consistency testing using the Mardia Kurtosis test for linear and quadratic discriminant analyses are the main counterparts of the work. The study’s findings show that using the observed dielectric properties of the oil samples, it may be possible to comprehend their subsequent roles.

Energy generation from plastic composites offers a viable solution to the dual challenges of plastic waste management and renewable energy production. This study explores the potential of plastic composites for energy generation through key waste-to-energy technologies, including incineration, pyrolysis, gasification, and anaerobic digestion. The study employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) methodology, following the PRISMA guidelines, and draws from two primary databases: ScienceDirect and Web of Science. Each method is assessed in terms of energy efficiency, environmental impact, economic feasibility, and scalability, based on studies published between 2020 and the second quarter of 2024. Pyrolysis and gasification emerge as particularly promising technologies due to their flexibility and higher energy recovery potential. Incineration, although widely used and well-established, presents challenges related to emissions, despite improvements in emissions control technologies. Anaerobic digestion, though limited in its application to conventional plastics, provides sustainability benefits when used with biodegradable materials. The analysis reveals regional disparities in research focus, the influence of policy frameworks, and the need for technological innovation to optimize these processes. Ultimately, the findings highlight the importance of integrating energy recovery from plastic waste within circular economy models to achieve sustainable waste management and renewable energy goals. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

The chip cooling has become more appealing due to the increasing integration of integrated circuits. The physical parameters of a stable phase change emulsion are obtained, and the thermosiphon loop system with a microchannel heat sink is built. The results revealed the system using a 0.5% mass concentration emulsion (cm) runs stably at a low heating power (Q ≤ 8.5 W). An increase of cm (= 1.0 and 1.5%) enables the system to present a periodic start-up characteristic at 5.0 and 7.5 W, while the system with cm = 2.0% failed to start, and the heating power of 8.5 W makes the system with cm = 2.0% achieve a steady state. Moreover, the hysteresis of peak temperature of adjacent measuring points is weakened by increasing cm or Q. Compared with the deionized water, heat transfer coefficients of the microchannel heat sink with cm = 0.5 and 2.0% were increased by 16.0% and 17.1%, respectively. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2020.

Ice bending fracturing is a major failure mode for sea ice act on offshore wind turbines (OWTs) with icebreaker. The cohesive element method (CEM) is applied to simulate the bending fracturing and fragmentation accumulation of the level ice in the presented study. The elastoplastic linear softening constitutive model is used to consider the characteristics of S2 columnar ice, and the transversely isotropic Tsai-Wu failure criterion is adopted t o predict the ice failure. The proposed interaction coupling model is implemented into the LS-DYNA finite element code. Then, the sea ice crack expansion, breaking, sliding, and accumulation are observed under different ice velocities. Meanwhile, the numerical results are validated against the ice force model test data. Furthermore, the structural motion responses of the OWT under sea ice loads are investigated, and influence of ice velocities is observed. The results show that the ice velocity has no significant effect on ice force and structural motion response. However, the fracture size are decreased with the increasing of ice velocities. © 2022 by the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).

A continuous mode of electrocoagulation reactor is implemented to enhance the effectiveness of pollutant removal, replacing the existing chemical coagulation in plastic plating industry. This study was conducted on-site at a full-scale operation of the wastewater treatment plant for nine months to evaluate the removal efficiency as well as chemicals and energy consumptions. The treatment flow were adjusted to optimize the operational cost. More than 99% removal of heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Ni) were achieved with chemical expenses reduction by almost 50%. Also, more than 50% reduction of sludge production was observed, and acid and alkali by-products were completely recycled. These results confirm that electrocoagulation can be optimized and fully implemented to substitute conventional chemical coagulation. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
