This study investigated the effect of using waste crumb rubber as a partial replacement for the fine aggregates on the fresh and hardened properties of normal mix concrete. Waste crumb rubber with particles sizes of 2 mm–4 mm was supplanted in the mix design of the concrete as part of the fine aggregates. Three different percentages of waste crumb rubber were considered to replace the fine aggregate which are 5%, 10%, and 15% by volume. The properties of fresh concrete were evaluated through standard slump test, while the hardened properties were examined through compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural strength tests after curing at 7 days and 28 days. Furthermore, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) tests were also carried out to evaluate the integrity and quality of the crumb rubber concrete. The test results revealed that the partial replacement of the fine aggregate with waste crumb rubber significantly decreased the workability and mechanical properties of the concrete. In addition, the concrete workability decreased with the increasing substitution of the waste crumb rubber replacement to that of the fine aggregate. Similarly, by increasing substitution of the waste crumb content, the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexural strength showed a decreasing trend from the control mixture at 7 days and 28 days. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2024.

Changing mobility patterns in the Netherlands during COVID-19 outbreak

The COVID-19 outbreak and associated measures taken had an enormous impact on society as well as a disruptive, but not necessarily negative, impact on mobility. The Ministry of infrastructure and Water Management received the most recent insights from the Dutch Mobility Panel (DMP) on a weekly basis. These insights were used to monitor the travel behaviour and to analyse changes in the behaviour of different groups and usage of modes of transport during COVID-19. The analysis shows an enormous decrease in travel at the beginning of the implementation of the so-called ‘intelligent’ lockdown and gradual increase again towards comparable levels as before this ‘intelligent lockdown, although the distribution over time, motives and used modes has changed. It becomes clear that not everyone needs to travel during peak hours and commuter travel is also not the main reason for the increase in car usage. Furthermore, cycling has shown to be an alternative option for travellers and public transport is hardly used anymore. If it is possible to sustain the lower level of car usage and integrate public transport as an important alternative for travel again, the COVID-19 impact on mobility could have a substantial remaining positive impact on mobility. © 2021 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

In this study, we conducted a comparative analysis of three deep learning models - CNNs (90% accuracy), LSTMs (92% accuracy), and RNNs (95% accuracy) - for skeleton-based action recognition. The research focused on evaluating each model's ability to accurately classify a variety of human actions using a Kaggle dataset. Our findings revealed CNNs' strength in spatial recognition, LSTMs' proficiency in temporal dynamics, and RNNs' overall superiority in sequential processing. The study emphasizes the importance of model selection in action recognition tasks and lays groundwork for future exploration into hybrid models. © 2024 SPIE.

Optical fibre sensors are currently used to detect many non-electrical phenomena. The latest sensors analyze the polarization properties of light inside an optical fiber. Unlike interferometric methods, this method uses the interference of two planes of polarization at the output of the optical fibre. The sensors are divided into linear polarizer sensors or multi-fibre interference sensors based on different ways of converting the polarization state into a change in the intensity of the optical radiation. These sensors are particularly suitable for low frequency vibration measurements due to the transformation of beats into the longitudinal deformation of the optical fibre. The aim of the presented measurements was to demonstrate that these polarization vibration sensors have excellent sensitivity and are thus suitable for vibration detection. This paper demonstrates that polarization sensors have excellent sensitivity, are convenient and inexpensive to install, and, due to their non-electric nature, are suitable for hazardous environments. In addition, it is possible to employ these sensors as intrusion detection and prevention systems and remotely power them at a distance of tens of kilometers. The motivation for this research was the lack of information and equipment for vibration testing of optical fibres and the associated polarization changes. © 2024 IEEE.

Recycling of metals has become one of the most important concerns in the modern industrial development. The availability of the rare earth metals keeps on decreasing and the cost of mining increases as we go to higher depth of the planet. Not all metals can be recycled but majority of them can be used till they reach their recyclable cycle limits. Till then they can be used for construction and designing purposes. Metals can be separated by various aspects. The major one is separating metals with their magnetic property. Ferrous metals and non-Ferrous metals. Ferrous metals or alloys or those which have iron in their compounds so that they get attracted to magnetic field. Nonferrous are those which are not attracted to magnetic lines of force but still exhibit some characteristics when they are brought close to magnetic fields. With this property in the metals, they can be separated as magnetic and non-magnetic metals. This is done in metal and alloy industries where, while recycling is done this is one the efficient methods to separate metals having different properties. © 2023 IEEE.

Currently, the vast majority of international interactions and activities related to trade, government, culture, social interaction, and economics take place online. These interactions involve people, non-governmental organizations, governments, and government agencies at all levels. Recently, a sizeable number of commercial firms and government organizations all over the world have been presented with the challenge offered by cyberattacks as well as the danger represented by wireless communication technologies. A very little amount of time has passed since this had place. We were able to develop a model for the risk of cyber security by making use of Bayesian Networks. This model has the capability of locating the point of cyber security that is weak and merging two different cyber analysis models. Among these is the activityquality model, which shows how individuals and/or groups adhere to the legal requirements for cyber security. Evidence describing the critical component of cyber security for a research reactor's RPS may be produced via the cyber security risk model. An further model that shows the probability of a cyberattack against RPS architecture is the cyber security risk model. © 2024 IEEE.

In 2022, there are 1,524 flood events out of a total of 3,531 disasters occurring in Indonesia. East Kalimantan Province ranked 20th among the 35 provinces in Indonesia with 28 flood occurrences in 2022, resulting in two fatalities. This highlights the urgent need for addressing flood hazard to prevent future casualties. There are some methods that can be used to determine the flood hazard in a region. In this research aims to identify flood-prone areas in East Kalimantan Province and evaluate the effectiveness of different mapping methods. The methodology that compares are the Pairwise Comparison method and Geomorphic Flood Index (GFI). The study's results provide flood-prone area maps of East Kalimantan Province using both methods, recommend the more efficient method for flood-prone area identification, and offer mitigation strategies based on the findings. This research is intended to serve as a reference for selecting the best method for identifying flood-prone areas and for informing policy decisions to mitigate flood impacts in East Kalimantan Province. © Author(s) 2025.
