Identifying primary frames of official public health reporting in mainland China: a before-and-after policy change analysis using the ANTMN approach

The COVID-19 pandemic has exerted a profound influence on the global landscape, jeopardizing public health and transforming the daily lives of countless individuals. Navigating the complexities of public health communication during this crisis has emerged as a paramount challenge for both governmental institutions and media entities. In response to this quandary, we executed an extensive analysis of 929 official Chinese reports pertaining to COVID-19 on social media platforms, spanning from 7 November 2022, to 7 January 2023. Utilizing the sophisticated methodology of Analysis of Topic Model Networks (ANTMN), we discerned three overarching frameworks (Social Health Resources, Official Public Health Actions, and Dissemination of Health Knowledge) and nine salient themes (Medical Infrastructure, Collective Public Health Initiatives, Epidemiological Trajectories, Governmental Health Interventions, Temporary Recesses, Public Health Regulations, Community-Based Public Health, Medical Supply Distribution, and Health Information Dissemination). Moreover, by juxtaposing media coverage before and after the Chinese government’s adjustment in epidemic policy, we unveiled substantial disparities in the framing and thematic foci among various tiers and genres of media outlets. Our findings illuminate the intricate nature of public health reporting during the COVID-19 pandemic and underscore the necessity for a judicious appraisal of diverse factors. © 2024 Asian Media Information and Communication Centre.

Enacting Phronesis: some deliberations about enactive ethics

Enactivists have made several forays into the domain of ethical thought over the past decades: their proposals vary in foci and ambition (Colombetti and Torrance in Phenomenol Cogn Sci 8:505–526, 2009, Fourlas and Cuffari in Topoi 41:355–371, 2022, as reported by Di Paolo and De Jaegher (Linguistic bodies: the continuity between life and language, MIT Press, Cambridge, 2022), Pescador Canales and Mojica in Topoi 41:257–274, 2022). Rather than survey that terrain, this paper goes back to basics and revisits a seminal series of lectures by Varela on ethical expertise from 1999 that is standardly cited as a cornerstone for these sundry efforts. It reviews and questions some of the core claims and assumptions Varela makes in his attempt to bring enactivist ideas to bear on moral psychology and ethical expertise. His analysis is revealed to be lacking in crucial respects. Specifically, Varela mischaracterizes and undervalues Aristotle’s contributions to virtue ethics and fails to take stock of a pivotal Aristotelian lesson about what is required for being an ethical agent at all. This paper attempts to rectify that omission. It also considers, afresh, reasons why we should take a neo-Aristotelian approach to virtue ethics and phronesis then seriously today. Doing so, ironically, puts us in a position to directly respond to the concerns Varela raised about the unhealthy dominance of rule-based ethical approaches in Western thought. Finally, the paper shows that if we are interested in understanding how to enact phronesis at least one variety of enactivism—namely, radical enactivism—provides a promising framework for helping us to do so. This is because radical enactivism recognizes the existence of both contentless and contentful modes of cognizing and the need to understand how they interact and influence each other in complex ways. © The Author(s) 2025.

With the continuous improvement of urban development in China, there is an urgent need to explore a new model for urban management. Big data reveals that in the current era of urban densification, the availability of land resources for green construction is extremely limited. Achieving sustainable development of green spaces and ecological areas in high-density cities, while addressing the scarcity of land and residents’ demand for green spaces, has become a crucial challenge in contemporary urban development. This study focuses on the Macau Peninsula as a representative high-density urban area and systematically examines patterns for creating urban green spaces. It identifies desirable characteristics and proposes viable strategies for green space creation, taking into account the current construction status and development vision of the Macau Peninsula. These strategies include regional connectivity, comprehensive service coverage, seamless integration, micro-green expansion, and three-dimensional greening. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

With the rapid development of digital technology, the design and application of human-computer interaction systems are receiving increasing attention. Based on the design principles of generative artificial intelligence, this article focused on how to apply this technology to digital media through in-depth exploration and experimentation. This article aimed to obtain user behavior and response patterns from multidimensional data, and based on this, learn and optimize interaction models to achieve more personalized interaction effects. This article provided a detailed comparison and analysis of various existing interactive systems, and evaluated their performance and user experience in practical use. Therefore, this article started from the perspective of human-computer interaction and improved the performance and efficiency of human-computer interaction by simulating the perception and cognitive processes of humans. In addition, a study was also conducted on different application scenarios such as intelligent education, e-commerce, and online customer service. The first attempt time for user 9 was the minimum, reaching 105 s, and then continued to shorten until it remained at 65 s. The research results of this article can provide new ideas and methods for the intelligent human-computer interaction research of digital media. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

The development of Internet digital technology has given rise to online education. To meet the needs of social development and lifelong learning, the widespread application of online education has attracted many researchers to study it. Undoubtedly, due to the development of online education, the nature and structure of educational relationships have changed significantly. Using the PRISMA method, this study screened 538 existing relevant studies in three literature resource libraries, Scopus, WOS, and ProQuest. Explore the impact of AI-based educational technology on educational relationships from a phenomenological perspective. Finally, 8 closely related studies that meet the criteria were screened out, and it was found that there are 5 core elements in the research of this topic: educational technology, phenomenology, embodied learning, online education, and online educational relationships. It is pointed out that these 5 elements provide a systematic research direction for future research to further optimize educational relationships in online education and improve the effectiveness and quality of online learning. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable performance in various natural language processing tasks. However, their abilities in generating specific syntactic functions still need to be tested. Using verbs of chatting as a case study, this paper applied dependency grammar to annotate and extract their syntactic information. On this basis, prompts were utilized to guide LLMs in generating sentences of sentence-head relations and verb-object relations. The syntactic ability of the LLMs was then evaluated through error analysis, providing insights into the models’ performance at the syntactic level. The results reveal limitations in the LLMs’ ability to generate sentences with specific syntactic functions. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

An Exploration of the Role of Metacognitive Awareness and Listening Anxiety in EFL Learners’ Listening Comprehension

Listening comprehension results are affected by various individual difference factors. This study aimed to examine the relationship between metacognitive awareness, listening anxiety, and EFL listening comprehension. To this end, data from the Metacognitive Awareness Listening Questionnaire (MALQ), Foreign Language Listening Anxiety Scale (FLLAS), and an English listening test were collected from 88 EFL learners at a university in China. The results showed that participants had a moderate level of metacognitive awareness and listening anxiety. Pearson correlation tests revealed that listening performance was positively associated with metacognitive awareness (r =.31) and negatively associated with listening anxiety (r = -.27). There was a strong negative correlation between learners’ metacognitive awareness and anxiety in listening (r = -.51). Regression analyses found both metacognitive awareness and listening anxiety were significant predictors of EFL listening comprehension, explaining 10% and 7% of the variance in listening performance, respectively. The study also revealed a significant difference in learners’ metacognitive awareness and anxiety between low and high listening proficiency group. Low-proficient listeners had much higher levels of listening anxiety but lower metacognitive awareness than that of high-proficient listeners. Pedagogical suggestions were provided based on the major findings of this study. © 2024 International Listening Association.

Linear cultural heritage eco-cultural spatial system: A case study of the Great Tea Route in Shanxi

The preservation of linear cultural heritage currently stands as a critical issue within the realm of global cultural heritage protection. The integration of cultural and ecological factors, as well as protection policies and implementation strategies, are facing great challenges. In 2019, the linear heritage "the Great Tea Route" was added to the Tentative List of China's World Cultural Heritage, underscoring its cultural and ecological significance. This study presents the construction of an expansive cultural and ecological corridor network across the Shanxi Province section of the route, employing morpho-spatial pattern analysis, the MaxEnt model, and the MCR model to effectively integrate cultural and ecological resources. And explores the establishment of cultural landscape nodes and the enhancement of cultural and ecological services, advocating a community co-construction model. This not only facilitates the development of a corridor-based economy but also addresses administrative challenges, thus promoting the preservation and management of cultural and ecological resources. The network developed comprises 43 cultural ecology points, 86 cultural source points, and 21 ecological sources, forming a foundation for the corridor's conservation and use. This study aims to provide new insights for the sustainable management of linear cultural heritage and promote the comprehensive protection of resources. © 2025 The Author(s)

Introduction Pluralistic religions have been an important part of the history of Southeast Asia from the pre-modern to the modern period. They have permeated every aspect of the daily lives of ordinarypeopleandhavebeenutilizedas instruments of control by regional rulers to strengthen their grip on social stability and consolidate their power. A parallel can be drawn with Europe during the pre-modern period, where religious power and royal power were in constant confrontation. At times, religious authority even surpassed the control of royal power.

The significance of home is broadly recognised as representing selfhood, safety and autonomy. For older people, especially those with dementia, the ability to age in place at home can be threatened by a necessary move into a care home. Home has heightened importance for people with dementia. We know most people want to stay in their own homes, but there is limited research which explores what home means for people with dementia when they move into care homes. Based in a care home in regional New South Wales, Australia, this study used the arts-based method, body mapping, to explore what home meant to people with dementia and/or cognitive impairment. Seven body maps were co-created by current residents (four), family members and supporters (six) and researchers (three). The findings of the body-mapping process highlighted that home is much more than a physical location. Home meant having the ability to carry out practices and rituals, use objects, maintain relationships and experience sensations that are personally meaningful, and which differ from one person to the next. Their body maps revealed that in care homes, people could not 'do home' anymore because many of the practices, objects, people and places that mattered to them were no longer accessible. Body mapping was a useful method that facilitated the exploration of a holistic expression of home that would not have been possible with more traditional methods. For people with dementia, home was not only embodied and spatial, but also temporal, helping us to understand the ways in which care homes might facilitate a greater sense of home for people with dementia.
