In this paper we present a semi-automatic method for femoral bone positioning after 3D image reconstruction from Computed Tomography images. This serves as grounding for the definition of strict axial, longitudinal and anterior-posterior views, overcoming the problem of patient positioning biases in 2D femoral bone measuring methods. After the bone reconstruction is aligned to a standard reference frame, new tomographic slices can be generated, on which unbiased measures may be taken. This could allow not only accurate inter-patient comparisons but also intra-patient comparisons, i.e., comparisons of images of the same patient taken at different times. This method could enable medical doctors to diagnose and follow up several bone deformities more easily.

Protection of an intrusion detection engine with watermarking in Ad hoc networks

In this paper we present an intrusion detection engine comprised of two main elements;firstly, a neural network for the actual detection task and secondly watermarking techniques for protecting the related information that must be exchanged between nodes. In particular, we exploit information visualization and machine learning techniques in order to achieve efficient and effective intrusion detection. In order to avoid possible modification or alteration of the maps produced by the intrusion detection engine, we focus on safeguarding and authenticating them using a novel embedded watermarking method. Previously, we had shown promising results in the intrusion detection task using this system. This paper focuses on the watermarking technique and gives a detailed exposition that includes an experimental evaluation of its quality.

Data mining algorithms have been proved to be useful for the processing of large data sets in order to extract relevant information and knowledge. Such algorithms are also important for analyzing data collected from the users' activity users. One family of such data analysis is that of mining of log files of online applications that register the actions of online users during long periods of time. A relevant objective in this case is to study the behavior of online users and feedback the design processes of online applications to provide better usability and adaption to users' preferences. The context of this work is that of a virtual campus in which thousands of students and tutors carry out the learning and teaching activity using online applications. The information stored in log files of virtual campuses tend to be large, complex and heterogeneous in nature. Hence, their mining requires both efficient and intelligent processing and analysis of user interaction data during long-term learning activities. In this paper, we present a bi-clustering algorithm for processing large log data sets from the online daily activity of students in a real virtual campus. Our approach is useful to extract relevant knowledge about user activity such as navigation patterns, activities performed as well as to study time parameters related to such activities. The extracted information can be useful not only to students and tutors to stimulate and improve their experience when interacting with the system but also to the designers and developers of the virtual campus in order to better support the online teaching and learning.

In this paper we discusses some pros and cons of using AJAX for increasing the usability of Web applications. As AJAX allows Web applications look like desktop applications, it can increase the learnability of a Web application. Nevertheless, AJAX can also be the source of end user frustration if the XMLHttpRequest is not supported by the browser, Javascript is not available, or an Internet connection is missing. We also provide some workarounds for server response time gaps, for example by providing visible user feedback messages) and enabling the back button to work properly.

The performance of three different Entity-Attribute-Value (EAV) storage formats for Clinical Data Repositories (CDRs) is compared with regards to querying millions of data points from clinical sources to assess the amount of storage space the data use, the speed with which the data can be obtained, and the complexity of the queries required to retrieve the data. Performance results are presented that show that the hybrid EAV approach provides a nice balance of the simple and multi-data type formats.

This paper presents two approaches to achieve attentiveness of a virtual quiz agent in the interactions with multiple users at the same time. One attempts to improve the agent with an utterance strategy to determine whether, when, and whom to suggest the users the availability of hints or to urge the users to answer. In the other one, a transition state model presenting the agent's attitude that allows the agent to perform meaningful idle motions is introduced. The transition model is obtained in a Wizard-of-Oz (WOZ) experiment and is learned with support vector machine (SVM). These two prototype systems are evaluated with an automatic attitude test, go/no-go task (GNAT) and regular questionnaires. From the joint results of the evaluation subject experiments, the direction of finding an appropriate triggering timing of the agent's behaviours is proved to be effective. Lumiproxy:A Hybrid Representation of Image-Based Models

In this paper, we present a hybrid representation of image-based models combining the textured planes and the hierarchical points. Taking a set of depth images as input, our method starts from classifying input pixels into two categories, indicating the planar and non-planar surfaces respectively. For the planar surfaces, the geometric coefficients are reconstructed to form the uniformly sampled textures. For nearly planar surfaces, some textured planes, called lumiproxies, are constructed to represent the equivalent visual appearance. The Hough transform is used to find the positions of these textured planes, and optic flow measures are used to determine their textures. For remaining pixels corresponding to the non-planar geometries, the point primitive is applied, reorganized as the OBB-tree structure. Then, texture mapping and point splatting are employed together to render the novel views, with the hardware acceleration.

In this paper, the e-JIKEI Network project, a project for creating community safety with present day technology, is reviewed. With the e-JIKEI Network, each individual watches around his/her house using cameras as his/her eyes, a computer as his/her brain, and software. For privacy protection, we propose the e-JIKEI with Privacy Protection, in which people who own and manage images (the owner) and people who have the right to view the images (the viewer) are separated by the encryption of the images. In order to evaluate our concept, social experiments have been performed. The present status and future prospects have been discussed in detail.
