The Permanent Magnet method for measuring critical current density in high-temperature superconducting thin film is numerically and experimentally investigated. Numerical results show that the critical current density is approximately proportional to the maximum repulsive force. Furthermore, the maximum repulsive force increases as the value of diameter of permanent magnet increases. These tendency is also observed in the experimental investigation. Finally, the spatial distributions of the shielding current density are reproduced by the system experimentally. © 2009 IEEE.

The Italica Project is the implementation of an Electronic Health Record system at the Italian Hospital of Buenos Aires. The present work shows the implementation of a Medical Signal Grid Repository module and its integration to the Italica Project. We also describe the architecture of that module and explain the design decisions taken for its construction. The integration to the preexisting system is also presented, together with the difficulties that arose from the insertion of a data grid in an environment not used to this technology. Several issues about the security and reliability of the medical data are treated as well. In this paper we also discuss the use of the grid repository as a starting point for the development of distributed processing applications. ©2009 IEEE.

E-Learning is widely used to facilitate and enhance learning in higher education. For developing any e-Learning program, direct and indirect costs associated with digital learning content should be measured. Normally, over 60% of total e-Learning costs are spent on design, development, publication and evaluation of learning content. However, the rapid growth of high quality digital content has become a challenge to tertiary education institutions. This paper discusses the employment of new technology known as learning objects for creating cost effective learning content. By investigating essential factors that affect learning content development, variables influencing the development cost are identified. Identified variables associated with content development process are prioritized based on the extent and significance of each variable in the context of ‘cost’. Through taking control of these seemingly controllable variables, the content development cost can be minimized and thus cost effective learning content can be created.

Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) considers the characteristics of the image itself, for example its shapes, colors and textures. The current approaches to CBIR differ in terms of which image features are extracted. Recent work deals with combination of distances or scores from different and independent representations. This work attempts to induce high level semantics from the low level descriptors of the images. In this paper, we propose a new approach that integrates techniques of salient, color and texture features. Our approach extracts interest salient regions that work as local descriptors. A greedy graph matching algorithm with a proposed modified scoring function is applied to determine the final image rank. The proposed approach is appropriate for accurately retrieving images even in distortion cases such as geometric deformations and noise. This approach was tested on proprietary image databases. Also an offline case study is developed where our approach is tested on images retrieved from Google keyword based image search engine. The results show that a combination of our approach as a local image descriptor with another global descriptor outperforms other approaches.

This paper proposes a recommendation method considering users' time series contexts which are situations that have occurred/will occur in the past/future. There are some recommendation methods that provide information suitable for users' action patterns as the recommendation methods considering them. These methods provide information referring to the other users that have a similar action pattern to that of an active user. However, since a user's action pattern changes depending on the user's contexts, the methods need to refer to the other users' action patterns related to the current user's contexts. In this paper, we propose a recommendation method considering the user's time series contexts considering that the user's action pattern changes depending on the user's contexts. Copyright 2009 ACM.

Many people with severe disabilities find it difficult or even impossible to use traditional powered wheelchairs independently by manually controlling these electrical devices. Intelligent wheelchairs are a very good solution to assist severely handicapped people who are unable to operate classical electrical wheelchair by themselves in their daily activities. This paper describes a development platform for intelligent wheelchairs called IntellWheels. The intelligent system developed may be added to commercial powered wheelchairs with minimal modifications in a very straightforward manner. The paper describes the concept and design of the platform, including the hardware and software, multimodal input interface and the intelligent wheelchair prototype developed to validate the approach. Preliminary results concerning automatic movement of the IntellWheels prototype are also described showing the autonomous movement capabilities of the prototype. © 2009 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

A new features based algorithm for face recognition is proposed. The algorithm is based on locating features on faces and finding the correspondence of these features between faces using an algorithm which is adopted from the works of Yasein and Agathoklis. The algorithm is using feature extraction through filtering with Mexican-hat wavelets and detection of correspondence of the feature points through comparison of Zernike moments. The transformation of the feature points between images is obtained using an iterative weighted least-squares algorithm which allows to eliminate outliers. The face recognition is based on the residual error between the feature points after transformation. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated using experiments with a face database and compared against existing techniques for face recognition. The results of experiments with varying pose and illumination conditions show that the proposed method performs well compared to existing feature based face recognition techniques.

The architecture of designed intrusion detection system is based on two layer hybrid model for event detection. System function is based on analysis parts of network flow in a real communication and offers processing of this data in a real time. The core of the first layer are detection sensors, which offer base processing based on statistical methods with direct interconnection to countermeasure module. Performance and accuracy of designed system is secured with central distributed processing, in which is used detection based on particular event description, which foregoing intrusion. The architecture presented in this article is a result of teamwork of Department of computer and informatics and Institute of computer technologies of Technical University of Kosice. Its partial results are processed in author's master thesis and research within the APPV-0073-07 project.
