Big social data analysis for quality of MOOC courses: the moderating role of practical examples

Big social data analysis has played an important role in understanding learners’ preferences in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). This study investigates learners’ satisfaction with MOOCs using big social data analysis and a large-scale survey. The learners’ online reviews are analyzed using a hybrid method based on machine learning techniques and Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling. We adopted a text mining approach, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), which is widely used in topic modeling. We utilized a large dataset of 6004 online reviews obtained from the learners of Udemy’s online courses. The results from the analysis identified nine topics as aspects of the quality of online courses, namely Course Accessibility, Course Cost, Course Material Quality, Course Organization, Course Resource Availability, Course Usefulness, Instructor Explanation, Instructor Knowledge, and Practical Examples in the Course. The results of the analysis were used to construct a research model, which was evaluated using a large-scale survey (N = 464). The results of the PLS-SEM confirmed the significant impacts of the proposed research factors, except for course organization, on learners’ satisfaction. The results also revealed that the practical examples in the course moderate the relationships between course usefulness, instructor explanation, instructor knowledge, and learners’ satisfaction. The findings of this research contribute to both the theoretical and methodological aspects of discovering and analyzing the influential factors for learners' satisfaction with MOOCs, thereby offering valuable insights for enhancing the overall quality of education in digital learning environments.

The existence of perfect state transfer (PST) on quantum spin networks is a fundamental problem in mathematics and physics. Various works in the literature have explored PST in graphs with arithmetic origins, such as gcd-graphs over Z and cubelike graphs. In this article, building on our recent work on gcd-graphs over an arbitrary finite Frobenius ring, we investigate the existence of PST on these graphs. Gcd-graphs represent an interesting and historically important class of integral graphs. Since the pioneering work of Klotz and Sander, numerous incarnations of these graphs have been explored in the literature. In this article, we define and establish some foundational properties of gcd-graphs defined over a general finite commutative ring. In particular, we investigate the connectivity and diameter of these graphs. Additionally, when the ring is a finite symmetric Z /n-algebra, we give an explicit description of their spectrum using the theory of Ramanujan sums that gives a unified treatment of various results in the literature. © 2025, CC BY.

The paper introduces an advanced hybrid model combining Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks to enhance fingerprint detection and matching within large datasets. The CNN component is employed for feature extraction and learning from image data, while the LSTM component is utilized for sequence prediction in temporal series, yielding optimal results compared to existing methods based on specific criteria. This hybrid approach achieves a fingerprint recognition accuracy of 99.85 %. The proposed method effectively reduces errors in recognition and false rejection rates in fingerprint recognition systems, thereby improving overall usability and security. The integration of CNN and LSTM in fingerprint recognition signifies a substantial advancement in biometric authentication technology, with potential applications in law enforcement, border security, and access control systems. © 2025

This paper explores the applicability of generative AI (genAI), specifically Large Language Models (LLMs), for the automatic generation and configuration of metaheuristic algorithms to address a real-world engineering problem: the optimal parameter estimation of time-delay systems in interconnected heating-cooling loops. The study introduces a pioneering workflow and iterative architecture with feedback within the emerging field of genAI-driven optimization for real optimization problems, eliminating the need for manually crafted or modified algorithms. This automated system empowers domain experts in engineering to solve complex optimization problems with minimal knowledge of optimization algorithms, lowering the barrier to entry for sophisticated algorithm use. We demonstrate how LLMs can generate effective optimizers under conditions like connstrained optimization problems where the solution lies near the boundaries of the search space. Four state-of-the-art LLMs (closed and open-sourced) have been selected for experiments. These are GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini, Claude Sonnet 3.5 and Llama 3.1. All studied LLMs generated metaheuristics that outperformed the initialization baseline optimization method (Random Search and CMA-ES). Notably, the Claude Sonnet 3.5 model generated a metaheuristic with the best mean results, almost matching the performance of the tuned state-of-the-art DISH algorithm, as an example of adaptive Differential Evolution. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

While Electronic Prescription Systems (EPS) adoption varies across EU Member States, there's a lack of comprehensive comparative analysis. Existing studies focus on single EPSs, employ diverse methodologies, and lack up-to-date data. This study fills this gap by providing a comprehensive overview of EPS development, functionalities, and usage statistics in each EU Member State. Most EU Member States widely adopted EPS by 2022, with exceptions including Germany, France, and Luxembourg, where pilot projects or just plans existed at that time. Out of the 27 EPSs, 25 employ a similar design featuring a central server and end-user software or web-based applications. Among these, 22 are structured as single national systems. The fundamental technical solution is remarkably similar across the EU. Despite these similarities, functionalities, authentication methods, prescription validity, and medication coverage differ significantly among EPSs. A multinational team, including co-authors from each EU Member State, collected data using a structured questionnaire. The study underscores the need for standardized methodologies in EPS research and emphasizes the importance of comprehensive comparative analysis to inform healthcare policies and digitalization efforts. © 2013 IEEE.

k-clustering typically struggles with the detection of irregular-distributed clusters due to the natural bias, while density clustering usually cannot well-adapt to different datasets and clustering tasks as it is not an oriented optimization process. This paper, therefore, proposes to perform density clustering in dynamically learned subspaces. To exploit the irregular-distributed clusters obtained by density clustering for the subspace determination, we design a new strategy to appropriately evaluate the importance of attributes. It turns out that the proposed Weighted Density-based Subspace Clustering (WDSC) algorithm inherits the unbiased merits of density clustering, and also upgrades the unlearning density clustering to be learnable under the subspace learning paradigm of k-clustering. A comprehensive evaluation including significance tests, ablation studies, qualitative comparisons, etc., shows the superiority of WDSC.

In this paper we consider the continuous wavelet transform using Gaussian wavelets multiplied by an appropriate rational term. The zeros and poles of this rational modifier act as free parameters and their choice highly influences the shape of the mother wavelet. This allows the proposed construction to approximate signals with complex morphology using only a few wavelet coefficients. We show that the proposed rational Gaussian wavelets are admissible and provide numerical approximations of the wavelet coefficients using variable projection operators. In addition, we show how the proposed variable projection based rational Gaussian wavelet transform can be used in neural networks to obtain a highly interpretable feature learning layer. —Accurate illness diagnosis is vital for effective treatment and patient safety. Machine learning models are widely used for cancer diagnosis based on historical medical data. However, data imbalance remains a major challenge, leading to hindering classifier performance and reliability. The SMOTEBoost method addresses this issue by generating synthetic data to balance the dataset, but it may overlook crucial overlapping regions near the decision boundary and can produce noisy samples. This paper proposes RE-SMOTEBoost, an enhanced version of SMOTEBoost, designed to overcome these limitations. Firstly, RE-SMOTEBoost focuses on generating synthetic samples in overlapping regions to better capture the decision boundary using roulette wheel selection. Secondly, it incorporates a filtering mechanism based on information entropy to reduce noise, and borderline cases and improve the quality of generated data. Thirdly, we introduce a double regularization penalty to control the synthetic samples’ proximity to the decision boundary and avoid class overlap. These enhancements enable higher-quality oversampling of the minority class, resulting in a more balanced and effective training dataset. The proposed method outperforms existing state-of-the-art techniques when evaluated on imbalanced datasets. Compared to the top-performing sampling algorithms, RE-SMOTEBoost demonstrates a notable improvement of 3.22% in accuracy and a variance reduction of 88.8%. These results indicate that the proposed model offers a solid solution for medical settings, effectively overcoming data scarcity and severe imbalance caused by limited samples, data collection difficulties, and privacy constraints.
