In this paper, we describe a natural implementation of the classical logarithmic barrier function method for smooth convex programming. It is assumed that the objective and constraint functions fulfill the so-called relative Lipschitz condition, with Lipschitz constant M > 0. In our method, we do line searches along the Newton direction with respect to the strictly convex logarithmic barrier function if we are far away from the central trajectory. If we are sufficiently close to this path, with respect to a certain metric, we reduce the barrier parameter. We prove that the number of iterations required by the algorithm to converge to an epsilon-optimal solution is O((1 + M2) square-root n\log-epsilon\) or O((1 + M2)n\log-epsilon\), depending on the updating scheme for the lower bound.

The system described, VISC, has as its aim the acquisition and subsequent digitization of monodimensional cardiotocographic signals. These signals can originate in any type of hospital cardiotocographic register, as well as in a book of uterine activity (UA) or fetal heart rate (FHR) signals. VISC consists of a set of algorithms to identify the fetal heart rate signal, although it can be used with minor corrections to work on any continuous curve. Some of the problems that may arise, such as signal loss and presence of noise, are discussed to illustrate the proposed method. The program is integrated into a wider environment, whose main nucleus is the NST-EXPERT expert system, for the diagnosis of fetal well-being, the recommendation of therapeutical plans and the prognosis of immediate neonatal states.

Sequence mining is an important data mining task. In order to retrieve interesting sequences from a large database, a minimum support threshold is needed to be specified. Unfortunately, specification of the appropriated support threshold is very difficult for users who are novice to mining queries and task specific data. To avoid this difficulty of specification of the appropriated support threshold, this paper is proposed to mine k most frequent closed sequences consisting of events containing a single item. This is called top-k closed sequences. This mining not only provides an easy way to retrieve interesting sequences but also gives the compact representation of sequences. In this paper, an efficient algorithm, called TKS, is also proposed for mining top-k closed sequences without candidate maintenance. In addition, it produces closed sequences in support descending in order to avoid finding the appropriated support threshold before mining phase.

Strict TCP-friendliness is a problematic issue that discourages multicast deployment on the Internet. In this paper, we therefore propose a new design of Multi-Rate Multicast Congestion Control (MR-MCC) by revising our previous proposed MR-MCC protocol, namely Explicit Rate Adjustment (ERA). In the new design, a multicast-supportive TCP-friendliness bandwidth allocation is used at intermediate nodes (routers) to motivate multicast deployment by giving more bandwidth to ERA without starving TCP. At the end node, an explicit reception rate adjustment algorithm is used. The receiver adjusts its reception rates according to the network conditions using Packet-pair Probe (PP). The implementation of our new ERA is done on the network simulator 2 (ns2). We demonstrate via simulations that the new ERA could provide responsiveness, fairness and the motivation for multicast deployment.
