The integration of augmented reality (AR) into educational environments will depend on its perceived effectiveness in enhancing teaching practices and the attitudes toward the use of this technology. Therefore, the main objective is to investigate the teachers’ attitude and motivation to adopt AR in educational settings, which also looks at a cross-cultural context. Furthermore, this research reveals different aspects that have an impact on teachers’ attitudes toward adopting AR in the teaching process. To investigate this, we conducted a study with 87 K-12 teachers belonging to two different education systems, i.e., Sweden and Palestine. The mixed-methods approach enhances the validity of the study and provides a broad understanding through numerical data, while qualitative insights offer deeper explanations of the findings. The results indicate a statistically significant difference in teachers’ attitudes about AR, with a mean 3.99 for teachers coming from Palestine showing a more positive attitude towards AR-supported learning. Therefore, it is important for educational institutions and application developers to consider a range of learning and teaching methods, as well as specific needs, throughout the process of developing and incorporating AR into the curriculum. © 2025 by the authors of this article.

A new CNN-based watermarking method for color medical images in a fusion domain

The transmission of medical images via medical agencies raises security concerns, necessitating increased security measures to ensure integrity and security. However, many watermarking algorithms overlook equipoise;the relation between robustness, invisibility, and payload capacity results in a less satisfactory performance. To bridge this gap, we propose a new blind watermarking method for securing medical images based on a convolutional neural network in a fusion domain. First, we transmute the host color image using a phase-only transform (PHOT) to detect the surface pattern. We feed the detected surface pattern into a pre-trained VGG19 model to impeccably extract the stable feature vector. We encrypt the extracted image features using a hybrid Chirikov map to enhance their robustness and reliability. The synergy between the pre-trained VGG19 model and PHOT in an integrated domain effectively captures additional native and localized image features. A hybrid Fibonacci Q-matrix method scrambles the binary watermark to enhance security. Integrating double encryption into the proposed method markedly enhances its resistance against diverse countermeasures. Experimental outcomes indicate that the proposed scheme performs efficiently in robustness and invisibility. The obtained PSNR value was up to 60.15 dB, which is optimal for human perception. The embedded watermark can be retrieved without any warping. The retrieved watermark seems to be authentic, exhibiting ideal BER and NC values. In almost all attack circumstances, the BER values approached zero while the NC values got closer. The proposed method demonstrates notable enhancements in robustness and invisibility compared to prior methods. © The Author(s) 2025.

Designing a skilled soccer team for RoboCup: exploring skill-set-primitives through reinforcement learning

The RoboCup 3D soccer simulation league serves as a competitive platform for showcasing innovation in autonomous humanoid robot agents through simulated soccer matches. Our team, FC Portugal, developed a new codebase from scratch in Python after RoboCup 2021. The team’s performance relies on a set of skills centered around novel unifying primitives and a custom, symmetry-extended version of the proximal policy optimization algorithm. Our methods have been thoroughly tested in official RoboCup matches, where FC Portugal has won the last two main competitions, in 2022 and 2023. This paper presents our training framework, as well as a timeline of skills developed using our skill-set-primitives, which considerably improve the sample efficiency and stability of skills, and motivate seamless transitions. We start with a significantly fast Sprint-Kick developed in 2021 and progress to the most recent skill set, including a multi-purpose omnidirectional walk, a dribble with unprecedented ball control, a solid kick, and a push skill. The push addresses low-level collision scenarios and high-level strategies to increase ball possession. We address the resource-intensive nature of this task through an innovative multi-agent learning approach. Finally, we release the team’s codebase to the RoboCup community, providing other teams with a robust and modern foundation upon which they can build new features. © The Author(s) 2025.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with an increasing prevalence among the elderly, making early and accurate diagnosis critical for effective intervention and management. This paper introduces an end-to-end machine learning pipeline optimized for detecting AD using multimodal data from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). The study proposes an ensemble model that integrates key modalities—demographics, cognitive scores, neuropsychological assessments, and MRI data—via early fusion to enhance AD detection. Various machine learning models, including Logistic Regression, Gradient Boosting, AdaBoost, XGBoost, Support Vector Machine, and Neural Networks, are compared, and feature selection is optimized through Recursive Feature Elimination, ANOVA F-value, and mutual information methods, with mutual information showing the most efficacy. With further hyperparameter tuning, the highest accuracy is achieved at 95.85%, with Gradient Boosting as the top-performing model. Additional experiments assess and evaluate individual modality contributions, underscoring the predictive value of cognitive scores and neuropsychological features. To enhance clinical interpretability, we incorporate model explainability using LIME and SHAP, which identify key features influencing model predictions across different AD stages. Explainable AI (XAI) is essential in healthcare for providing transparency and supporting clinician confidence by highlighting which biomarkers, such as MMSE, CDRSB, and PTAU, contribute most to diagnostic outcomes. This study demonstrates classical machine learning's potential in AD diagnostics, offering a pathway to cost-effective and clinically viable models for neurodegenerative disease management. © 2025 IEEE.

Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) remain a crucial challenge in healthcare systems, highly contributing to patient mortality. We present an innovative smart pharmacy system that utilizes advanced large language models (LLMs) to enhance drug safety and pharmacy operational efficiency. Our system integrates real-time data from patient's prescriptions, medication databases, and electronic health records (EHR) to automate the detection of potential drug interactions, optimizing clinical decision-making and reducing ADR-related risks. The system's architecture is designed to easily manage prescription processing for patients, inventory management and control, and Pharmacist consultations through an intelligent chatbot interface. Key features include real-time tracking of medication expiration and inventory levels, an interaction checker API for identifying and mitigating risky drug combinations, and an LLM-powered chatbot for accurate data analysis and visualization. By combining advanced computational techniques with AI-driven insights, our smart pharmacy system not only improves medication safety but also eases pharmacy operations. This transformative approach holds the potential to significantly reduce ADR-related hospital admissions and enhance overall healthcare delivery. Our research underscores the vital role of AI and LLMs in modern pharmacy practice, offering an inclusive solution that integrates easily into existing healthcare infrastructures. The proposed smart pharmacy system can be plugged into hospital EHR systems to automatically track patient medications. © 2025 IEEE.

Advanced Feature Extraction and Machine Learning Techniques for Classifying Steam Game Feedback

The gaming industry produces vast amounts of user-generated feedback, making it challenging for developers to efficiently analyze and respond to real-time reviews. This study addresses the problem of classifying large-scale unstructured user feedback from Steam reviews. In this paper an approach that integrates traditional machine learning models and deep learning models is proposed. XGBoost is used to manage feature-rich datasets, reducing overfitting. Long-short-term memory (LSTM) and Bi-directional LSTM are used to enhance the accuracy and robustness of classification. Feature extraction techniques, such as sentiment analysis and topic modeling, are employed to enrich the dataset and improve model performance. The experimental results show that the XGBoost model achieved the highest performance with an accuracy of 0.9499 and a ROC-AUC score of 0.6113, demonstrating superior performance in distinguishing between positive and negative feedback. In comparison, deep learning models such as LSTM and Bi-directional LSTM showed lower ROC-AUC scores, indicating less effectiveness in handling the classification task. This approach offers game developers a reliable and scalable solution for classifying user sentiment, leading to better game improvements based on user reviews. © 2025 by the authors of this article.

An imbalanced dataset often challenges machine learning, particularly classification methods. Underrepresented minority classes can result in biased and inaccurate models. The Synthetic Minority Over-Sampling Technique (SMOTE) was developed to address the problem of imbalanced data. Over time, several weaknesses of the SMOTE method have been identified in generating synthetic minority class data, such as overlapping, noise, and small disjuncts. However, these studies generally focus on only one of SMOTE’s weaknesses: noise or overlapping. Therefore, this study addresses both issues simultaneously by tackling noise and overlapping in SMOTE-generated data. This study proposes a combined approach of filtering, clustering, and distance modification to reduce noise and overlapping produced by SMOTE. Filtering removes minority class data (noise) located in majority class regions, with the k-nn method applied for filtering. The use of Noise Reduction (NR), which removes data that is considered noise before applying SMOTE, has a positive impact in overcoming data imbalance. Clustering establishes decision boundaries by partitioning data into clusters, allowing SMOTE with modified distance metrics to generate minority class data within each cluster. This SMOTE clustering and distance modification approach aims to minimize overlap in synthetic minority data that could introduce noise. The proposed method is called “NR-Clustering SMOTE,” which has several stages in balancing data: (1) filtering by removing minority classes close to majority classes (data noise) using the k-nn method;(2) clustering data using K-means aims to establish decision boundaries by partitioning data into several clusters;(3) applying SMOTE oversampling with Manhattan distance within each cluster. Indeed, risky roads have a negative impact on traffic by causing road injuries with fatalities, which can lead to negative emotional, social, and economic influences on humans, countries, and the world. Additionally, taxi and rideshare passengers prefer to move on familiar and safe roads. Therefore, to ensure the high quality of transportation services, it is required to follow secure roads to avoid poorly maintained roads, areas with high incidences of car accidents, neighborhoods with high crime rates, and places with a history of terrorist attacks or civil unrest. In this regard, discovering risky roads is a need. This paper introduces a real-time framework, named RiskyMove, that helps drivers and passengers to follow safe roads and avoid risky once that are not safe for travel. Mainly, the RiskyMove framework employs a probabilistic method based on a Minimum Adaptive Viterbi (MAV) algorithm to identify risky paths during the trip and alarm the drivers to take precautions. An experimental evaluation of the RiskyMove with a real dataset of the movement of cabs in San Francisco illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed framework. © 2025 The Authors

RT-PPS: Real-time privacy-preserving scheme for cloud-hosted IoT data

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a rapidly growing network of devices that can communicate with each other and with cloud-based services. These devices generate vast amounts of data that can be used to provide valuable insights into user behavior, environmental conditions, and other important factors. However, as this data is collected and processed by cloud-hosted services, there is a growing concern about privacy and security. Without adequate protection, sensitive information could be exposed to hackers or other malicious actors, putting both individuals and organizations at risk. To address this challenge, real-time privacy-preserving techniques can be used to protect IoT data without compromising its value. This paper introduces an efficient Real-time privacy-preserving scheme (RT-PPS) for cloud-hosted IoT data. RT-PPS employs multi-authority attribute-based encryption on a hybrid cloud environment to keep data secure and private, while still allowing it to be processed and analyzed by cloud-hosted services. RT-PPS has efficient response time and resource consumption, which gives it the ability to handle a huge number of concurrent users at the same time without notable delay. The proposed RT-PPS has been validated through extensive experimental evaluation on a variety of configurations. Moreover, the proposed scheme has been computationally compared with the state-of-the-artwork. RT-PPS has shown excellent performance, effectiveness, and efficiency. The RT-PPS encryption time for a 1 GB dataset while considering 1024 slices is approximately 1000 ms. Also, the RT-PPS decryption time for a 1 GB ciphertext while considering 1024 slices are approximately 235 ms. Finally, RT-PPS is proven secure against any polynomial-time attacks and their variations that have at most a negligible advantage in the introduced security model. This work considers the problem of the noisy binary search in a sorted array. The noise is modeled by a parameter p that dictates that a comparison can be incorrect with probability p, independently of other queries. We state two types of upper bounds on the number of queries: the worst-case and expected query complexity scenarios. The bounds improve the ones known to date, i.e., our algorithms require fewer queries. Additionally, they have simpler statements, and work for the full range of parameters. All query complexities for the expected query scenarios are tight up to lower order terms. For the problem where the target prior is uniform over all possible inputs, we provide an algorithm with expected complexity upperbounded by (log2 n + log2 δ−1 + 3)/I(p), where n is the domain size, 0 ≤ p 0 is the failure probability, and I(p) is the information gain function. As a side-effect, we close some correctness issues regarding previous work. Also, en route, we obtain new and improved query complexities for the search generalized to arbitrary graphs. This paper continues and improves the lines of research of Burnashev-Zigangirov [Prob. Per. Informatsii, 1974], Ben-Or and Hassidim [FOCS 2008], Gu and Xu [STOC 2023], and Emamjomeh-Zadeh et al.
