Two of the primary vital signs are breathing and pulse rate. There are various solutions to monitor them, however, all require additional equipment and expertise to use. Smartphones are nowadays at almost every person's arm length, therefore, it could be cost-effective for crowd and personal health screening. Diaphragmatic breathing can be measured with Inertial Measurement Units (IMU). To optimize the breathing detection the smartphone has to be placed in the middle of the epigastric region. The tissue in the region vibrates because of the presence of the abdominal aorta which is also picked up by the IMU. Breathing, which is usually under 1 Hz during sleep can be filtered out with a Bandpass filter. The heartbeat is present as vibrations which can be seen between 1-30 Hz. After filtering, breathing is detectable by a peak detector algorithm and can be differentiated from noises. Copyright © 2020 for this paper by its authors. Intestinal damage (ID) leads to bacterial translocation and bloodstream infections—the common cause of non-relapse mortality in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). This study evaluated ID over ALL induction and the significance of body mass index (BMI) for its development and identified biomarkers reflecting chemotherapy-induced ID. The composite biomarker panel included 37 plasma amino acids, urea, ammonia, fecal calprotectin (fCLP), absolute neutrophil count (ANC), C-reactive protein, and albumin. We prospectively assessed 45 children treated according to the ALLTogether protocol in 2020–2024. Analysis and sample collection were performed on days 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29 of the protocol. The obtained values were compared between the ID and non-ID groups. 40% of patients (18/45) had grade I–III ID which was more pronounced on day 22 of induction when the ANC increased from its lowest point. Age younger than 5.5 years at a diagnosis was a significant prognostic factor for ID. Decreasing BMI and concentrations of citrulline, taurine, cystine, phosphoethanolamine, A-aminobutyric acid, B-alanine, and albumin suggest progressive ID in children treated due to ALL. No difference in ANC and fCLP was found between patients with and without ID, but fCLP levels start to rise simultaneously as the most intense ID is observed. In conclusion, assessing nutritional status and prospective evaluation of biomarkers may provide valuable information on treatment-related ID. © The Author(s) 2025.

Understanding the relationship between vocal tract motion during speech and the resulting acoustic signal is crucial for aided clinical assessment and developing personalized treatment and rehabilitation strategies. Toward this goal, we introduce an audio-to-video generation framework for creating Real Time/cine-Magnetic Resonance Imaging (RT-/cine-MRI) visuals of the vocal tract from speech signals. Our framework first preprocesses RT-/cine-MRI sequences and speech samples to achieve temporal alignment, ensuring synchronization between visual and audio data. We then employ a modified stable diffusion model, integrating structural and temporal blocks, to effectively capture movement characteristics and temporal dynamics in the synchronized data. This process enables the generation of MRI sequences from new speech inputs, improving the conversion of audio into visual data. We evaluated our framework on healthy controls and tongue cancer patients by analyzing and comparing the vocal tract movements in synthesized videos. Our framework demonstrated adaptability to new speech inputs and effective generalization. In addition, positive human evaluations confirmed its effectiveness, with realistic and accurate visualizations, suggesting its potential for outpatient therapy and personalized simulation of vocal tract visualizations. © 2025, CC BY-NC-ND.

This article evaluates an academic application designed to provide career guidance using the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ). A survey involving 255 respondents assessed the application across 6 UX dimensions: attractiveness, perspicuity, efficiency, dependability, stimulation, and novelty. The results reveal the highest scores on Attractiveness 1.473 and Perspicuity 1.642, indicating that the platform is visually appealing and easy to navigate. However, lower scores on Novelty 0.774 and Dependability 1.243 highlight areas requiring improvement, particularly in building trust among users and introducing innovative features. The implications of these findings suggest that while the platform holds significant potential as a tool for academic monitoring and career guidance, enhancing user engagement and reliability will be critical to achieving broader acceptance. Addressing the gaps in Stimulation (1.135) and Novelty could lead to a more engaging and unique user experience, aligning with the evolving needs of students. This study provides actionable insights for the iterative development of user-centered educational tools, emphasizing the importance of UX in supporting informed decision-making and improving academic outcomes. © 2024 IEEE.

Introduction data-driven medical research (DDMR) needs multimodal data (MMD) to sufficiently capture the complexity of clinical cases. Methods for early multimodal data integration (MMDI), i.e. integration of the data before performing a data analysis, vary from basic concatenation to applying Deep Learning, each with distinct characteristics and challenges. Besides early MMDI, there exists late MMDI which performs modality-specific data analyses and then combines the analysis results. Methods We conducted a scoping review, following PRISMA guidelines, to find and analyze 21 reviews on methods for early MMDI between 2019 and 2024. Results Our analysis categorized these methods into four groups and summarized group-specific characteristics that are relevant for choosing the optimal method combination for MMDI pipelines in DDMR projects. Moreover, we found that early MMDI is often performed by executing several methods subsequently in a pipeline. This early MMDI pipeline is usually subject to manual *** Our focus was on structural integration in DDMR. The choice of MMDI method depends on the research setting, complexity, and the researcher team's expertise. Future research could focus on comparing early and late MMDI approaches as well as automating the optimization of MMDI pipelines to integrate vast amounts of real-world medical data effectively, facilitating holistic DDMR. © 2024 The Authors.

The concept of privacy-by-design has gained considerable attention in the wake of legal requirements that software systems should fulfill. The interconnected knowledge on privacy concepts, legal requirements, and software development artifacts required to implement this concept can be a major burden for organizations. To address this challenge, we propose a knowledge graph-based Exploratory Search system to help organizations complete privacy engineering tasks. We identify major requirements of such systems and develop an Exploratory Search prototype built on privacy engineering knowledge that integrates different information sources. While still preliminary, this work serves as a foundation for future research on integrating privacy knowledge into software development and demonstrates the potential of Exploratory Search Systems to support the cognitive process in privacy tasks such as privacy threat identification. © 2023 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

Technical light-field setup for 3D imaging of the human nerve head validated with an eye model

With the new technology of 3D light field (LF) imaging, fundus photography can be expanded to provide depth information. This increases the diagnostic possibilities and additionally improves image quality by digitally refocusing. To provide depth information in the human optic nerve head such as in glaucoma diagnostics, a mydriatic fundus camera was upgraded with an LF imager. The aim of the study presented here was the validation of the technical setup and resulting depth estimations with an appropriate eye model. The technical setup consisted of a mydriatic fundus camera (FF450, Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germany) and an LF imager (R12, Raytrix GmbH, Kiel, Germany). The field of view was set to 30°. The eye model (24.65 mm total length) consisted of a two-lens optical system and interchangeable fundus models with papilla excavations from 0.2 to 1 mm in steps of 0.2 mm. They were coated with red acrylic lacquer and vessels were drawn with a thin brush. 15 images were taken for each papilla depth illuminated with green light (wavelength 520 nm ± 20 nm). Papilla depth was measured from the papilla ground to the surrounding flat region. All 15 measurements for each papilla depth were averaged and compared to the printed depth. It was possible to perform 3D fundus imaging in an eye model by means of a novel LF-based optical setup. All LF images could be digitally refocused subsequently. Depth estimation in the eye model was successfully performed over a 30° field of view. The measured virtual depth and the printed model papilla depth is linear correlated. The presented LF setup allowed high-quality 3D one-shot imaging and depth estimation of the optic nerve head in an eye model. © 2021 by Walter de Gruyter Berlin/Boston.

By a case study approach, the paper analyzes a project and information ecosystem of the Clinical Research environment within a Medical School at a University. There are two types of data sources, a medical information system based on a transactional database for recording patients and serving as the basis of nursing and treatments of patients and medical and other medical IoT systems (like ECGs, etc). There exists neither data Warehouse solutions nor any other data collection solutions dedicated to utilizing data science methods and tools. The emerging technologies provide opportunities for synergy between the traditional data Warehouse and the most recent data Lake approaches. A deep learning model for correcting nonlinear biases between the TEC measurements of COSMIC-2 and GNSS

Radio occultation technology, with its characteristics of global coverage, all-weather capability, and high resolution, has become an important tool for ionospheric research and modeling. However, the nonlinear biases between space-borne and ground-based systems limit the accuracy of data fusion. To solve this problem, a deep learning-based calibration model containing various kinds of parameters is developed for correcting the nonlinear biases. The correcting performances of this model are comprehensively evaluated depending on season and latitude under quiet periods and geomagnetic storms. The results indicate that the model significantly reduces the discrepancies in TEC measurements between COSMIC-2 and GNSS. During the quiet period, the most significant improvement occurred in the (40°S–20°S) region, where MAE and RMSE were reduced to 0.74 TECU and 1.11 TECU, respectively. This was followed by the (20°S–0°) and (0°–20°N) regions, with reductions of 0.83 and 0.93 TECU, and 1.29 and 1.35 TECU, respectively. The weakest improvement was observed in the (20°N–40°N) region, where MAE and RMSE were 0.92 TECU and 1.36 TECU, respectively. Seasonally, the model performed best in winter, followed by summer, with slightly lower performance in spring and autumn. During the geomagnetic storm period, the best performance was achieved in the (40°S–20°S) region, with an RMSE of 0.99 TECU and a correlation coefficient of 0.9958. This was followed by the (0°–20°N) and (20°N–40°N) regions, which had RMSE values of 1.35 and 1.40 TECU and correlation coefficients of 0.9942 and 0.9940, respectively. The weakest performance occurred in the (20°S–0°) region, with an RMSE of 1.51 TECU and a correlation coefficient of 0.9937. These findings demonstrate that the proposed model significantly enhances the accuracy of occultation data, providing valuable insights for ionospheric modeling and data integration. © 2025 COSPAR
