Many dynamic routing architectural patterns are available, including distributed routing, e.g., using the sidecar pattern, or centralized routing, e.g., using event stores or service buses. Different Quality-of-Service (QoS) factors influence routing schemas and technology selection, such as performance, reliability, scalability, and control properties offered by the patterns. An analytical model can formalize the QoS factors and facilitate the architectural decision-making when changing the routing scheme, i.e., to more distributed or centralized routing. So far, the impact of these architectural patterns on performability, i.e., the overall performance of a system with impeded reliability, has not been extensively studied. This is important because deciding to increase performance, e.g., by parallel processing of requests, may lead to decreased reliability because of the added points of a crash. We propose an analytical performability model during component crashes. For the empirical validation of our proposed model, we ran an extensive experiment of 2412 hours of runtime on a private cloud infrastructure and Google Cloud Platform. The low prediction error of 1.75 % indicates the high accuracy of our performability model. These results provide important insights when making architectural decisions regarding service- and cloud-based dynamic routing.

The manuscript presents the management of waste from marine vessels and cargo handling companies in a selected European Union port. The main objective of the paper is to analyse and evaluate the existing waste management model in the port of Szczecin in the context of circular economy. The expert research carried out is aimed, inter alia , at identifying which of the solutions currently in use need to be improved from an environmental perspective. These measures could serve as a basis for the development of green logistics chains for waste generated in connection with the organisation of shipping. What is of particular importance in this regard is the information flow, which preferably should be an integral part of an international IT system enabling tracking of waste streams from their place origin to final disposal. In light of the above, it is particularly important to look for solutions which will support the creation and adoption of models providing sufficient control over the entirety of green waste management activities, in line with the circular economy concept.

the design decisions made in the architecture of a software system are essential to its maintainability, and thus its quality is of great importance. Architecture smells (ASs) can be used to identify any quality issues within the system. To further explore the relationships between ASs, stability, and reusability, Spearman correlation coefficients will be calculated. This paper seeks to examine the connection between architecture smells, software stability, and reusability. To do this, we utilized a dataset created by other researchers and conducted an empirical study of the associations between five types of architecture smells and software stability and reusability. This research is necessary as there is a lack of in-depth research on architecture smells and their relationship to software stability and reusability. We found a relationship between the presence of Feature Concentration in package and the stability and reusability of the package. Also, package's stability is affected by both Cyclic Dependency and Unstable Dependency. A slight positive correlation has been found between God Class and stability, as well as a very weak negative correlation between Unstable Dependency and reusability. Finally, we found a slight negative correlation between package stability and reusability.

Counterfeit and Genuine Ethiopian Banknote Classification Model Using Similarity Learning

Counterfeiting money is nearly as old as money itself and is a common problem around the globe. Even though counterfeiting is often motivated by financial gain, the ability of counterfeiting to have significant economic consequences has led to its use as a political weapon or terrorism. In Ethiopia, counterfeit banknotes remain a persistent problem, and the existing methods for their detection primarily rely on manual inspection of the security features, creating awareness, and hardware-based systems, such as bill counters and detector machines. However, hardware-based systems are expensive, while manual inspection is a time-consuming, subjective process and prone to errors. Relying on manual inspection, awareness, and machine-based techniques is inadequate. Only a handful of studies have been conducted on the current Ethiopian banknotes. This study presents a novel combination of two deep learning approaches known as transfer and similarity learning for classifying counterfeit and genuine Ethiopian banknotes. The experimental result indicates the Inception and Vgg16 models scored equal classification accuracy scores of 0.9925 and a classification loss of 0.0025 on the testing dataset. Despite having a similar score, the Vgg16 shows the probability of an unknown class on the test dataset. The inception similarity model having a better distance score of 0.335824 made it a better model than Vgg16. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

SUS-Lib: An automated tool for usability evaluation based on the software Usability Scale from user feedback

Usability evaluation has received considerable attention from both the research and practice communities. While there are many evaluation tools available, the software Usability Scale (SUS) is the most widely used. In this paper, we introduce and describe the SUS-Lib software package, which aims to compute SUS scores and generate graphical figures based on user input. SUS-Lib responds to the need for user-friendly software that requires only basic knowledge and skills of the Python environment and command line tools. By using open source solutions and low hardware resources, SUS-Lib is a cost-effective solution. In addition, due to its generic nature, SUS-Lib can also be used in different research setups and settings. © 2024, CC BY.

Imposing nonlocal boundary conditions in Galerkin-type methods based on non-interpolatory functions

The imposition of inhomogeneous Dirichlet (essential) boundary conditions is a fundamental challenge in the application of Galerkin-type methods based on non-interpolatory functions, i.e., functions which do not possess the Kronecker delta property. Such functions typically are used in various meshfree methods, as well as methods based on the isogeometric paradigm. The present paper analyses a model problem consisting of the Poisson equation subject to non-standard boundary conditions. Namely, instead of classical boundary conditions, the model problem involves Dirichlet- and Neumann-type nonlocal boundary conditions. Variational formulations with strongly and weakly imposed inhomogeneous Dirichlet-type nonlocal conditions are derived and compared within an extensive numerical study in the isogeometric framework based on non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS). The attention in the numerical study is paid mainly to the influence of the nonlocal boundary conditions on the properties of the considered discretisation methods. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. software engineers often work on multidisciplinary projects as they collaborate with domain experts in a variety of different disciplines to effectively develop software systems. While the focus of software engineering curricula is generally on teaching technical skills, it is highly desirable to provide students with hands-on experience in working on multidisciplinary projects. This research attempts to facilitate the experience of working on projects with stakeholders of diverse expertise through the use of multidisciplinary hackathons. In recent years, hackathons have been considered effective teaching and evaluation tools that can contribute to the development of practical skills for students. Hackathons can be used as an instrument to improve the educational experience through learning by doing in which learners can test their problem-solving, project management, and prioritization skills in a limited time. This research presents a case study of hackathons in the field of health informatics involving students from software engineering and nursing. To facilitate a consistent and supportive multidisciplinary learning experience, the hackathon was introduced as a course component in two different courses in nursing and software engineering. The data presented in this research is from two consecutive executions of the hackathon involving two different cohorts of students in 2022 and 2023. The results of this study show that students believe a multidisciplinary course would be a welcomed addition as it facilitated an exciting collaborative environment to work on real-world problems;providing a unique opportunity for interactions between different disciplines. The addition of hackathons into the courses enhanced the students' understanding of how to work with requirements from gathering to analysis to development, and allowed them the unique opportunity to examine the different challenges, technologies, and tools involved with other disciplines. © 2023 IEEE.

Urban growth estimation is an essential part of urban planning in order to ensure sustainable regional development. For such purpose, analysis of remote sensing data can be used. The difficulty in analysing a time series of remote sensing data lies in ensuring that the accuracy stays stable in different periods. In this publication, aerial images were analysed for three periods, which lasted for 9 years. The main issues arose due to the different quality of images, which lead to bias between periods. Consequently, this results in difficulties in interpreting whether the urban growth actually happened, or it was identified due to the incorrect segmentation of images. To overcome this issue, datasets were generated to train the convolutional neural network (CNN) and transfer learning technique has been applied. Finally, the results obtained with the created CNN of different periods enable to implement different approaches to detect, analyse and interpret urban changes for the policymakers and investors on different levels as a map, grid, or contour map. © 2021 by SCITEPRESS - Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

This study investigates the application of graph neural networks (GNN) in session-based recommendation systems (SR), focusing on a key modification involving the use of a global vector. Session-based recommendation systems often face challenges in accurately capturing user behavior due to the limited data available within individual sessions. The SR-GNN model, originally designed for automatic feature extraction from session graphs by leveraging rich connections between nodes, addresses these challenges effectively. In our experiments, we replaced the local vector with a global vector representing the entire session sequence, not just the last element. Our results show that both local and global vectors perform comparably, suggesting that the global vector is sufficient to capture the session context. Additionally, our study indicate that the SR-GNN algorithm maintains consistent performance across various datasets, with minor fluctuations depending on the dataset characteristics. The conducted experiments highlight the resilience and adaptability of the SR-GNN model in diverse scenarios, demonstrating its potential for use in session-based recommendation systems. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

This research introduces a novel Probabilistic Graph Modeling-based Safety Classifier Algorithm designed for the purpose of classifying road safety in smart transportation systems. Leveraging a combination of numerical integration methods and Gaussian kernel density estimation models, the proposed algorithm offers an effective approach to assess and categorizing the safety levels of roads. The integration of these techniques enables a comprehensive analysis, allowing for a more nuanced understanding of the complex interactions within transportation networks.
