A note on the applications of artificial intelligence in the hospitality industry: preliminary results of a survey

Intelligent technologies are widely implemented in different areas of modern society but specific approaches should be applied in services. Basic relationships refer to supporting customers and people responsible for services offering for these customers. The aim of the paper is to analyze and evaluate the state-of-the art of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in the hospitality industry. Our findings show that the major deployments concern in-person customer services, chatbots and messaging tools, business intelligence tools powered by machine learning, and virtual reality & augmented reality. Moreover, we performed a survey (n = 178), asking respondents about their perceptions and attitudes toward AI, including its implementation within a hotel space. The paper attempts to discuss how the hotel industry can be motivated by potential customers to apply selected AI solutions. In our opinion, these results provide useful insights for understanding the phenomenon under investigation. Nevertheless, since the results are not conclusive, more research is still needed on this topic. Future studies may concern both qualitative and quantitative methods, devoted to developing models that: a) quantify the potential benefits and risks of AI implementations, b) determine and evaluate the factors affecting the AI adoption by the customers, and c) measure the user (guest) experience of the hotel services, fueled by AI-based technologies.

Researchers and practitioners have recently proposed many Microservices Architecture (MSA) patterns and strategies covering various aspects of microservices system life cycle, such as service design and security. However, selecting and implementing these patterns and strategies can entail various challenges for microservices practitioners. To this end, this study proposes decision models for selecting patterns and strategies covering four MSA design areas: application decomposition into microservices, microservices security, microservices communication, and service discovery. We used peer-reviewed and grey literature to identify the patterns, strategies, and quality attributes for creating these decision models. To evaluate the familiarity, understandability, completeness, and usefulness of the decision models, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 24 microservices practitioners from 12 countries across five continents. Our evaluation results show that the practitioners found the decision models as an effective guide to select microservices patterns and strategies. © 2022, CC BY.

A Secure Federated Data-Driven Evolutionary Multi-objective Optimization Algorithm

Data-driven evolutionary algorithms usually aim to exploit the information behind a limited amount of data to perform optimization, which have proved to be successful in solving many complex real-world optimization problems. However, most data-driven evolutionary algorithms are centralized, causing privacy and security concerns. Existing federated Bayesian optimization algorithms and data-driven evolutionary algorithms mainly protect the raw data on each client. To address this issue, this paper proposes a secure federated data-driven evolutionary multiobjective optimization algorithm to protect both the raw data and the newly infilled solutions obtained by optimizing the acquisition function conducted on the server. We select the query points on a randomly selected client at each round of surrogate update by calculating the acquisition function values of the unobserved points on this client, thereby reducing the risk of leaking the information about the solution to be sampled. In addition, since the predicted objective values of each client may contain sensitive information, we mask the objective values with Diffie-Hellman-based noise, and then send only the masked objective values of other clients to the selected client via the server. Since the calculation of the acquisition function also requires both the predicted objective value and the uncertainty of the prediction, the predicted mean objective and uncertainty are normalized to reduce the influence of noise. Experimental results on a set of widely used multi-objective optimization benchmarks show that the proposed algorithm can protect privacy and enhance security with only negligible sacrifice in the performance of federated data-driven evolutionary optimization. Palliative care services are rapidly evolving in cancer care organisations. In palliative care processes, administratives are involved without acknowledging that they may hinder rather than facilitate the path of palliative care in respect to cancer patients. Comprehending a palliative care organisation, without looking at current running processes is groundless. Therefore, a critical understanding of palliative care processes is necessary for improving respective cancer care systems. In this research palliative care Business Process Models (BPMs) have been developed to empower palliative care domain experts not only attaining a critical understanding of the currently running palliative care operations, but also in informing further required improvements with associated implications on cancer patients. Amongst the key outcomes of developing and analysing palliative BPMs in a cancer care organisation revealed identifying gaps, limitations, challenges, and opportunities to reflectively improve palliative care processes in cancer care centres. Finally, this research suggests further re-engineering of palliative care processes as reference models that may be instantiated in specific socio-cultural, person-centered, and other contextual settings aimed at improved qualitative palliative care for cancer patients.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has paved the way for revolutionary decision-making processes, which if harnessed appropriately, can contribute to advancements in various sectors, from healthcare to economics. However, its black box nature presents significant ethical challenges related to bias and transparency. AI applications are hugely impacted by biases, presenting inconsistent and unreliable findings, leading to significant costs and consequences, highlighting and perpetuating inequalities and unequal access to resources. Hence, developing safe, reliable, ethical, and Trustworthy AI systems is essential. Our team of researchers working with Trustworthy and Responsible AI, part of the Transdisciplinary Scholarship Initiative within the University of Calgary, conducts research on Trustworthy and Responsible AI, including fairness, bias mitigation, reproducibility, generalization, interpretability, and authenticity. In this paper, we review and discuss the intricacies of AI biases, definitions, methods of detection and mitigation, and metrics for evaluating bias. We also discuss open challenges with regard to the trustworthiness and widespread application of AI across diverse domains of human-centric decision making, as well as guidelines to foster Responsible and Trustworthy AI models. © 2024, CC BY.

Click on a formula to *** agriculture (PA) research aims to design decision systems based on agricultural site control and management. These systems consist of observing fields and measuring metrics to optimize yields and investments while preserving resources. The corresponding applications can be found on large agricultural areas based on satellites, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and sol robots. All these applications based on various algorithms that are complex in terms of processing time. If these algorithms are evaluated offline on work-stations or desktops, this is not the case for algorithms that need to be embedded and should operate and help make real-time decisions. We, therefore, need an advanced study using hardware-software co-design approach to design decision systems to embed different algorithms, including sensor data acquisition and processing units. In this work, we propose a review in processing information tools-based embedded systems in PA algorithms with different applications: weed detection, numerical counting, monitoring of plant indexes, and disease detection. This review has been based on more than 100 papers to extract useful information on the different techniques used and the information processing systems. The elaborated study presents the various tools, databases, and systems in order to extract the advantages and disadvantages of system and application.

This paper presents a new approach to kinematic modeling and trajectory tracking control system (TTCS) design of an autonomous two-wheeled robot. The robot kinematic modeling is carried out based on a vector diagram. It transforms the robot trajectory tracking problem into a stabilization problem of non-linear posture error dynamics. A solution is presented by applying a state feedback control. The posture error dynamics is linearized using the Taylor series and linear quadratic regulator (LQR) is applied to design the state feedback control. It results in a closed-loop system where all of the eigenvalues are real negative numbers. Performance evaluation of the TTCS is presented through numerical simulations in computer. The results show that the robot is able to track a reference trajectory without oscillation regardless of the robot initial posture. © 2021. Home Health Care (HHC) is an essential and critical part of palliative care and especially for terminal cancer patients. This research is aimed as a first attempt to align with the research gap in modelling the social requirements of palliative care processes and the HHC process in particular. Consequently, this research is a first attempt at developing an $\mathbf{i}^{\ast}$ framework visual goal-oriented and social requirements models of the HHC process of the domain of palliative care with a reflected application using a case study from a leading regional cancer centre in the Middle East, namely KHCC. Furthermore, this research has made it possible for palliative care domain experts in the HHC process and using the associated $\mathbf{i}^{\ast}$ framework strategic dependency and strategic rationale models to visually trace the most critical and strategic actors in the HHC process along with the highly interacting dependers and dependees. Finally, the HHC $\mathbf{i}^{\ast}$ strategic models contribute to bridging the gap between the world of palliative care requirements and their reflective computer-based information systems and $\mathbf{IoT}$ smart devices. Hence, this sheds light towards the realisation of the field of palliative care as being a “systems of systems” virtual organisation with the respective socio-technical systems involvement, for the best care of the palliative patient and especially terminal cancer patients. A further corollary of this research is the insufficiency and less representativeness of palliative care process models to utilise in guiding the development of the HHC $\mathbf{i}^{\ast}$ framework strategic models without linking to the full associated strategic and policy documents of palliative care.
