Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) represent a promising approach for organizations to provide their services to a large number of users, but also to consume other services in order to solve different business problems. A Service composition is useful when such problems do not have a straightforward solution. However, there may appear problems with the SLA of the composition in case of variations of QoS of its constituent services. In such a case there should exist an approach that allows for specification of QoS properties of Web-Services and their composition. This paper presents an extension of the standard WS-BPEL process description language. The implementation has a flexible design that allows both researchers and developers to tailor it for their specific needs. Copyright © 2014 ACM.

An application of a method for prioritizing requirements to an actual project is reported. The project where one of the authors participated as a project member developed in-house software development support tools based on a software product line. In the development of a software product line, a project needs to evolve core assets in accordance with changes to the environment, the market, and technology. The concerns of stakeholders may also change the process of evolving core assets over the years, and even if stakeholders change, the concept of the target product line should be maintained. In order to effectively evolve core assets, it is important for the project to prepare and utilize a standardized method for prioritizing requirements. In this paper, we analyzed the evolution of core assets in relation to an actual project. Tacit knowledge for prioritizing requirements was extracted. Such knowledge was made explicit and defined to develop a method for prioritizing requirements. The method consists of the rules and processes for applying the rules. We also defined a meta-model for prioritizing requirements and incorporated the concept of the improvement of rules into the meta-model. According to the evaluation of the method, the following issues were clarified: (a) different stakeholders smoothly and efficiently reached agreement using the method, and (b) the method is effective for reducing lead time and costs for defining requirements. © 2014 IEEE.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of digital game-based learning on the performance and motivation of high school students in computer science education. A simple matching game was designed using the ARCS Model which is wellknown in instructional design, and can be implemented to various aspects of game-based learning. The game content was identified by reviewing the exact course content used at national schools. An experiment was conducted to examine the students’ achievements through an exam and the learning motivations by The Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ). One hundred and fifty two (152) tenth grade students participated in the users study, and were separated into two groups: one is the experimental group that used game-based learning, and the other is the control group which used the traditional face-to-face approach. The quantitative data was collected and the scores in both learning groups were compared. The results show that students who studied by a gamebased learning model performed better than those who studied using traditional teaching sessions. The same users demonstrated positive attitudes toward the use of educational matching games. © ICIC International

This article describes a method and tool to identify expert translators in an on-demand translation service. We start from existing efforts on expert retrieval and factor in additional parameters based on the real-world scenario of the task. The system first identifies topical expertise using an aggregation function over relevance scores of previously translated documents by each translator, and then a learning to rank method to factor in non-topical relevance factors that are part of the decision-making process of the user, such as price and duration of translation. We test the system on a manually created test collection and show that the method is able to effectively support the user in selecting the best translator. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

When it comes to software process improvement (SPI), process engineers look for SPI methods to support process analysis, design, realization, deployment, and management. Although a number of different SPI methods and models exist, process engineers tend to view these as too generic, too large, or a poor fit for the organization in which SPI is conducted. A strategy to overcome these shortcomings is to concentrate on the artifacts, which precisely define the desired outcomes, rather than on specific methods. In this paper, we present the Artifact-based software Process Improvement & Management (ArSPI) model that provides a unified perspective on SPI and company-wide software process management (SPM), the required key artifacts, and the life cycle models. ArSPI is shown to be of practical support to industry who called for a practical way to define the interfaces between SPI projects. This paper concludes with an example of how ArSPI paved the way for several organizations through applying the model in real-world SPI-projects. © 2014 ACM.

Tongue diagnosis plays a significant role in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Owing to its experience-based nature, an increasing number of researchers have been studying on automatic tongue diagnosis methods. However, most methods fail to calibrate the input tongue images which rely on the quality of tongue images. In this paper, we present an optimised computer-aided tongue diagnosis method based on Android platform which makes up the drawbacks and insufficiency of our previous work. First, it calibrates the colour of the input tongue images and makes them standardised. Then the hue range of the brim pixels of the sample images is evaluated based on maximum likelihood estimate method. This can help us obtain edges and link them into a complete outline to finish tongue segmentation. Finally, we realise the new algorithm on Android platform which can give the classification of the tongue and make diagnosis. Compared to existing calibration algorithms, our system shows better robustness, comprehension and accuracy. © 2015 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Information systems supporting flexible business in small-to-medium enterprises must be easily modifiable under the supervision of their users. The users (business people) must take active part in agile system development and maintenance. The systems must be able to integrate large legacy systems and to communicate with the systems of independent business partners. Business processes need not be executed by a single ERP. We discuss a variant of SOA able to meet these requirements. The discussed SOA uses communication protocols based on problem-oriented languages. We propose a concept of organizational (architectural) services generalizing the concept of connectors and routers. The power and usefulness of the proposal is demonstrated on the examples of service composition, business-oriented interfaces, agile business processes, portals, and gateways. The proposal is based on experience from practical SOA projects.
