The task of Handwriting Digits Recognition represents a classification challenge involving the interpretation of handwritten digits sourced from diverse mediums such as paper, photos, touch screens, and other devices. This challenge is very intricate due to the distinctiveness of each individual's handwriting, and several essential traits that influence the interpretation process. Numerous researchers have devoted efforts to solve this problem. Recent research has improved preprocessing and feature extraction techniques by using particle swarm optimization to address the handwritten digit recognition problem. The outcomes of these experiments have shown obtain good results. Nevertheless, outcomes from this technique can be further improved. The feature selection technique popularly applies pattern recognition to improve outcomes. Thus, this study proposes a modified feature selection technique that developed from binary particle swarm optimization to optimize particle swarm optimization for handwritten digit recognition. This proposed feature selection technique has demonstrated the potential to yield higher Recognition Rates significantly in both training and testing phases. Comparative analysis against the original technique, devoid of the feature selection technique, reveals that the proposed method exhibits superior Recognition Rates when tested on both the original MNIST datasets and the individual's each person handwritten digit datasets. © 2024 IEEE.

An efficient feature selection and classification system for microarray cancer data using genetic algorithm and deep belief networks

Cancer is one of the most devastating health conditions in the world. In the diagnosis and treatment of the various forms of cancer illness, studies have shown that early detection of the cancer by clinical methods usually takes a considerable lengthy time. This informs searching for an alternative non-clinical diagnosis of cancer cases using microarray technology. Therefore, this study develops an efficient feature selection and classification method for high-dimensional microarray cancer data by combining Genetic Algorithms (GA) and Deep Belief Networks (DBN). The study employed a GA for selecting the most informative gene biomarker and DBN for the classification of biological samples. In a Monte Carlo experiment, the simulated and real-life microarray datasets were partitioned into 95% training and 5% test samples at 100 to 1000 epochs. The classifier was constructed using the training datasets while its efficiency was assessed on the test sample using the Misclassification Error Rate, Sensitivity, Specificity, and Receiver Operating Characteristic Analysis. The GA and DBN were implemented using Caret and Deepnet (R statistical packages). The proposed GADBN method was implemented using simulated and real-life datasets, which yielded out-of-bag average classification accuracy of 98.8% and 93.1% respectively. The proposed GADBN outperformed the other existing classifiers;and the GADBN method was more efficient with a smaller Misclassification Error Rate (MER) for Leukaemia 1 (0.18), Prostate 1 (0.35) and Prostate 3 (0.09) datasets than some of the existing methods under various performance indices considered. The proposed model is a powerful and effective instrument for identifying useful features in microarray cancer data and classifying the cancer types accordingly. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Development of Robot to Improve Learning of Programming Skills among Students

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR4.0) has shifted the mindsets of engineering students on the importance of IT skills for current and future engineering related jobs. Nowadays, programming is the most fundamental skill that needs to be learnt by the students using mBot technology. The mBot technology is consider as programmable educational robot designed for beginners to learn basic programming concepts which can be assessed and evaluated via bloom's taxonomy framework. It can be a daunting task to learn programming, especially to new students who do not have any prior experience in coding. Average and low performing students are lacking algorithmic skills, where they could not visualize how the programming concepts work. Therefore, this paper presents the effectiveness of using robot to improve students’ learning of the programming concepts. In designing the learning modules, bloom’s taxonomy model and problem-based learning are adopted using mBot. Moreover, a low-cost and pre-programmed line follower robot has been used to demonstrate the outputs from the programs written in a more interactive manner. For the evaluation, pre-test and post-test of Quasi experimental design have been applied involving 40 students who were identified and categorized as average and low performing groups in the course. The findings show that a significant improvement has been observed from students’ performance and motivation. As such, the students’ performance is measured based on two phases of experiments. Whereas the students’ motivation is measured based on four motivation attributes: self-efficacy, active learning strategy, programming learning value and performance goal. © 2023 College of Education, Al-Iraqia University. The field of information technology has witnessed rapid developments in data mining applications in education. In this context, association rule mining, one of the key aspects of data mining, has emerged as a specialized technique for extracting meaningful insights from sets of frequent items. Academic institutions face persistent challenges, including high failure rates and suboptimal academic achievement among students. This study examined the use of the Apriori algorithm to analyze data within an academic setting, focusing on students enrolled in the Department of Zoology at Sebha University. The primary objective was to study the effect of interconnectedness between academic courses on the overall academic performance of students in the Department of Zoology. The results revealed that high failure rates were observed consistently during the first two academic years. When the Arabic language course was linked to the botany course for second-semester students, an alarming failure rate of 80% occurred. Similarly, linking Arabic with Chemistry in the same semester resulted in a high failure rate of 75%. The English course during the same period showed a failure rate of 52%, which dropped significantly to 51% when linked to the zoology and chemistry courses. Conversely, linking other zoology courses to chemistry increased the failure rate by 59%, highlighting the subtle effects of course linkage on academic outcomes. These findings for the Department of Zoology are of fundamental importance to educators, providing valuable insights into improving student performance and identifying those who need additional support. © 2024 IEEE.

Breast Cancer (BC) remains a significant health challenge for women and is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. Accurate diagnosis is critical for successful therapy and increased survival rates. Recent advances in medical imaging and computational technologies have enabled more precise methods of detecting and evaluating breast cancer. Accurate analysis and diagnosis utilizing medical imaging have developed as essential research topics, providing important help in clinical decision-making for various illnesses, including breast cancer. Machine learning (ML) can accurately predict breast cancer. But the breast cancer data has vague and uncertainty information. So, the neutrosophic sets (NSs) are used in this study to deal with uncertainty data. We convert the original dataset into neutrosophic data with three components such as truth, indeterminacy, and falsity values. Then we applied four ML models with N-data such as logistic regression, gradient boosting (GB), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), and support vector machines (SVM), to improve diagnostic accuracy. Then we compared the ML models with and without using N-data. The results show the logistic regression has higher accuracy with 98.6% with the N-data and 95.80% without N-data. So, the NSs can improve the accuracy of ML models. © 2025, University of New Mexico. All rights reserved.

In this work, a novel methodological approach to multi-attribute decision-making problems is developed and the notion of Heptapartitioned Neutrosophic Set Distance Measures (HNSDM) is introduced. By averaging the Penta-Partitioned Neutrosophic Distance Measures under particular conditional criteria, the suggested technique ranks the options. Additionally, we explore the fundamental characteristics of HNSDM and provide several illustrative theorems. The Heptapartitioned Neutrosophic Set Distance Measures are formulated based on the Hepta Neutrosophic Set. Lastly, a practical numerical example is provided to illustrate the efficacy of the suggested methodology. © 2025, University of New Mexico. All rights reserved.

Predictive Analytics in Mobile Education: Evaluating Logistic Regression, Random Forest, and Gradient Boosting for Course Completion Forecasting

This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of three predictive algorithms—logistic regression, random forest, and GBM—in predicting course completion using user engagement data from online learning platforms. By analyzing engagement metrics such as session duration, session frequency, and quiz scores, the study sought to identify the most effective model for forecasting course completion, providing insights into which aspects of student behavior were most predictive of success. Logistic regression emerged as the best overall performer, achieving the highest accuracy (52.13%) and F1-Score (56.17%), indicating its balanced approach to predicting course completion and non-completion. Random forest and gradient boosting machines (GBM) showed strengths in specific areas;random forest maintained a good balance between precision and recall, while GBM excelled in recall, identifying students likely to complete courses but with lower precision, leading to more false positives. The findings have practical implications for educational technology, particularly in designing personalized learning paths and targeted interventions to support at-risk students. The study also acknowledged limitations, including the dataset’s focus on engagement metrics without demographic context and the potential for model-specific biases. Future research should explore additional predictive features, larger datasets, and more advanced algorithms to enhance the robustness and applicability of predictive models in real-time educational settings. © 2025 by the authors of this article.
