This study focuses on enhancing rice leaf disease image classification algorithms, which have traditionally relied on convolutional neural network (CNN) models. We employed transfer learning with MobileViTV2_050 using ImageNet-1k weights—a lightweight model that integrates CNN’s local feature extraction with Vision Transformers’ global context learning through a separable self-attention mechanism. Our approach resulted in a significant 15.66% improvement in classification accuracy for MobileViTV2_050-A, our first enhanced model trained on the baseline dataset, achieving 93.14%. Furthermore, MobileViTV2_050-B, our second enhanced model trained on a broader rice leaf dataset, demonstrated a 22.12% improvement, reaching 99.6% test accuracy. Additionally, MobileViTV2-A attained an F1-score of 93% across four rice labels and a Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve ranging from 87% to 97%. In terms of resource consumption, our enhanced models reduced the total parameters of the baseline CNN model up to 92.50%, from 14 million to 1.1 million. These results indicate that MobileViTV2_050 not only improves computational efficiency through its separable self-attention mechanism but also enhances global context learning. Consequently, it offers a lightweight and robust solution suitable for mobile deployment, advancing the interpretability and practicality of models in precision agriculture. © 2024, CC BY.

Rainfall plays a significant role in managing the water level in the *** unpredictable amount of rainfall due to the climate change can cause either overflow or dry in the *** individuals,especially those in the agricultural sector,rely on rain *** rainfall is challenging because of the changing nature of the *** area of Jimma in southwest Oromia,Ethiopia is the subject of this research,which aims to develop a rainfall forecasting *** estimate Jimma's daily rainfall,we propose a novel approach based on optimizing the parameters of long short-term memory(LSTM)using Al-Biruni earth radius(BER)optimization algorithm for boosting the fore-casting accuracy.N ash-Sutcliffe model eficiency(NSE),mean square error(MSE),root MSE(RMSE),mean absolute error(MAE),and R2 were all used in the conducted experiments to assess the proposed approach,with final scores of(0.61),(430.81),(19.12),and(11.09),***,we compared the proposed model to current machine-learning regression models;such as non-optimized LSTM,bidirectional LSTM(BiLSTM),gated recurrent unit(GRU),and convolutional LSTM(ConvLSTM).It was found that the proposed approach achieved the lowest RMSE of(19.12).In addition,the experimental results show that the proposed model has R-with a value outperforming the other models,which confirms the superiority of the proposed *** the other hand,a statistical analysis is performed to measure the significance and stability of the proposed approach and the recorded results proved the expected perfomance.

Technology is changing how students learn in the 21st century significantly. Integrating mobile devices in teaching, learning, and assessment processes has emerged as an important strategy for improving teaching methodologies and students’ learning. However, adopting mobile devices presents several challenges, including understanding the students’ performance, impact on time, and efficiency in the assessment process. This study explores this area with an empirical study of using mobile devices and compares the results to those using traditional desktop computers. In the educational environment, we investigated students’ effective use while interacting with mobile and desktop versions of the Second Introductory programming summative assessment. Multinational/multi-institutional research involved a comparative analysis between two student groups undertaking identical tasks on mobile phones and desktop computers. Our results suggest that the students’ results are not affected significantly by using the mobile version of the assessment application. These results highlight the usability of mobile devices as a flexible and effective tool for various educational applications, strengthening their role in the modern learning environment.

The development of the Internet has made people more closely related and has put forward higher requirements for recommendation models. Most recommendation models are studied only for the long-term interests of users. In this paper, the interaction time between the user and the item is introduced as auxiliary information in the model construction. Interaction time is used to determine users' long-term preferences and short-term preferences. In this paper, temporal features are extracted by building a convolutional gated recurrent unit with attention neural network (CNN-GRU-Attention). Firstly, for the problem of accurate feature extraction, CNN are constructed to extract higher-level and more abstract features of themselves and transform high-dimensional data into low-dimensional data;secondly, for the problem of social temporality, GRU are used to not only extract temporal information, but also effectively reduce gradient dispersion, making model convergence and training easier;finally, Graph Attention networks are used to aggregate the social relationship information of users and items respectively, which constitute the final feature representation of users and items respectively. In particular, a modified cosine similarity is used to reduce the error caused by data insensitivity when constructing the social information of the item. In this study, simulation experiments are conducted on two publicly available datasets (Epinions and Ciao), and the experimental results show that the proposed recommended model performs better than other social recommendation models, improving the evaluation metrics of MAE and RMSE by 1.06%-1.33% and 1.19%-1.37%, respectively. The effectiveness of the model innovation is proved. © 2023 IEEE.

In analyzing and recognizing wrist pulse signals, it isn’t easy to mine the nonlinear information of wrist pulse signals using analysis methods such as time and frequency. Traditional machine learning methods require the manual definition of features and cannot perform self-learning of features. A cognitive digital twin technique for pulse analysis and recognition based on threshold-less recursive graph and CNN is proposed. The wrist pulse signal is converted into a threshold-free recursive graph based on the nonlinear dynamics’ theory. The VGG-16 CNN automatically extracts the nonlinear features of the recursive graph, and a pulse condition classification model is established. Experimental finding several that the classification of the proposed method accuracy can reach 98.14%, as compared with the existing pulse classification methods. This study offers a novel concept and strategy for classifying pulse signals, and it has application to the objectification of pulse diagnosis. © 2025 The Author(s).

Since the inception of secure communication, safeguarding data confidentiality has been paramount. With the increased reliance on technology, the need for robust security mechanisms is more critical than ever. This paper explores confidentiality in cybersecurity, focusing on symmetric encryption algorithms. While symmetric encryption, particularly the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), is in wide use, concerns arise regarding its static nature. Therefore, the paper introduces a dynamic cipher, augmenting AES security by introducing a key-dependent S-Box. By leveraging the RC4 key schedule, the proposed cipher generates unique S-Boxes for each encryption key, significantly increasing security against non-generic attacks. Theoretical analysis demonstrates the proposed cipher is capable of resisting brute force, linear cryptanalysis, and differential cryptanalysis. Furthermore, its adaptability to existing AES implementations ensures practicality and ease of adoption. © 2024 IEEE.

Can metacognition predict your success in solving problems? An exploratory case study in programming

Metacognition has been recognized as an essential skill for academic success and for performance in solving problems. During learning or problem-solving, metacognitive skills facilitate a range of cognitive and affective processes, leading collectively to improved performance. This study explores the predictive potential of metacognition in the second introductory programming course. A two-dimensional model has been proposed, consisting of metacognitive awareness and metacognitive behavior. To evaluate the predictive capacity of metacognition empirically, an exploratory case study with 194 participants from two institutions was conducted in the second introductory programming course. A latent approach was employed to examine the associations between metacognition and performance in object-oriented programming. Our findings indicate that both metacognitive dimensions have a positive effect on programming. Likewise, the results of the structural equation modeling show that 27% of variance in programming performance is explained by metacognitive behavior. Following the results, metacognition has the potential to be considered as one of the important predictors of performance in introductory programming. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.
