Airlines use different boarding policies to organize the queue of passengers waiting to enter the airplane. We analyze three policies in the many-passenger limit by a geometric representation of the queue position and row designation of each passenger, and apply a Lorentzian metric to calculate the total boarding time. The boarding time is governed by the time each passenger needs to clear the aisle, and the added time is determined by the aisle-clearing time distribution through an effective aisle-clearing time parameter. The non-organized queues under the common random boarding policy are characterized by large effective aisle-clearing time. We show that, subject to a mathematical assumption which we have verified by extensive numerical computations in all realistic cases, the average total boarding time is always reduced when slow passengers are separated from faster passengers and the slow group is allowed to enter the airplane first. This is a universal result that holds for any combination of the three main governing parameters: the ratio between effective aisle-clearing times of the fast and the slow group, the fraction of slow passenger, and the congestion of passengers in the aisle. Separation into groups based on aisle-clearing time allows for more synchronized seating, but the result is non-trivial, as the similar fast-first policy — where the two groups enter the airplane in reverse order — is inferior to random boarding for a range of parameter settings. The asymptotic results conform well with discrete-event simulations with realistic number of passengers, and both the slow-first and the fast-first policies have the ability to perform unboundedly better than random boarding. Parameters based on empirical data, with hand luggage as criteria for separating passengers into the slow group, give a 13% reduction in total boarding time for slow first compared to random boarding. A considerable level of correlation between SID-monitoring time series and GPS-derived tec observations taken during development of a massive ionospheric storm

Space weather, geomagnetic, and ionospheric conditions are the most prominent causes of degradation in the positioning performance of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), through introduction of ionospheric delay in the GNSS signal. This affects numerous GNSS-based technologies and socio-economic systems and services. Analyses of case studies of GNSS positioning-performance degradation contribute to the characterization of GNSS positioning error, and support error-correction methods and model development. A case study of a rapidly developing ionospheric storm is examined here, with the aim of characterizing the event using a low-cost sudden ionospheric disturbance (SID) monitor observation of lower-ionospheric-level conditions through continuous reception of very-low-frequency (VLF) signal-strength values. Time series of observations, taken in Croatia during the St. Patrick 2015 event of the fast development of the large ionospheric storm, were compared with the time series of the dual-frequency GPS-derived observations of total electron content (TEC), a parameter linearly related to GNSS ionospheric delay. A comparison framework was developed in the open-source R programming framework for statistical computing. Time series of SID and GNSS-based TEC observations were examined for cross-correlation. The research revealed correspondences between the two time series. Although not linear, the correspondences identified may be used as an early warning for potential GNSS positioning-performance deterioration. Furthermore, this may serve as the foundation for understanding the lower-ionosphere contribution to the over-all TEC, and thus to the formation of the GNSS ionospheric delay. Our team intends to explore both research directions in forthcoming studies.

Cognitive Computing (CC) is a contemporary field of fundamental intelligence theories and general AI technologies triggered by the transdisciplinary development in intelligence, computer, brain, knowledge, cognitive, robotic, and cybernetic sciences for engineering implementations. This paper presents a summary of the plenary panel (Part II) on the theoretical foundations of CI/CC and recent breakthroughs in AI engineering reported in the 20th IEEE International ICCI*CC Conference (ICCI*CC'21). The latest advances in CI and CC towards general AI are presented by twenty-two distinguished panelists. Strategic AI engineering applications in CI, CC, and cognitive systems are elaborated for abstract intelligence, cognitive robots, autonomous systems, intelligent vehicles, and safety-and-mission-critical systems.

The fuzzy TOPSIS applications in the last decade

Multi-criteria decision-analysis (MCDA) methods have been widely applied by many researchers in various fields of study. One of the numerous MCDA methods, the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) under fuzzy environment, namely fuzzy TOPSIS, has been successfully applied in many practical, real-world challenges. This paper provides a short review of fuzzy TOPSIS applications. The research is based on 25 studies conducted in the years 2009 - 2018. Most relevant and most cited papers concerned with fuzzy TOPSIS technique were analyzed and categorized into application areas, such as supply chain, environment, energy sources, business, healthcare. Fuzzy TOPSIS implementations are examined and compared by approaches used, such as fuzzy sets, hesitant fuzzy sets or intuitionistic fuzzy sets, by other methods combined with fuzzy TOPSIS, such as fuzzy Analytic Hierarchic Process (AHP) or enhancements for group decision-making and by a number of alternatives and criteria used. Finally, insights into ongoing trends, most popular approaches, and directions of study concerning the fuzzy TOPSIS method are presented.

Identification of the football teams assessment model using the COMET method

Many people, organizations and managers try to assess the performance of the football teams and seek new improved approaches. Rankings are an unavoidable part of the football world, where high competitiveness and efficiency is a natural factor. One of the techniques to deal with such problems is the use of multi-criteria decision-analysis methods (MCDA), offering an effective approach to not only ranking but also assessing, selecting and sorting given alternatives. In this paper, the Characteristic Objects METhod (COMET) is used in order to create a performance ranking of the top-tier football clubs. The assessment model is identified and compared with the existing benchmark ranking by the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient.

Influence of various normalization methods in PROMETHEE II: an empirical study on the selection of the airport location

Multi-criteria decision-analysis (MCDA) is a popular field of study with implementations in various areas, such as supply chain management, logistics, engineering, health, sustainable development, to name a few. The normalization of the data considered in such challenges (decision matrix) is an essential step of many MCDA methods. Different normalization techniques can influence the results obtained, and hence, generate different final rankings. In this paper, the investigation of normalization effects is conducted in the PROMETHEE II method. Five different normalization methods were used and additionally, the case without normalization was examined. In order to compare the influence of various normalization methods, an empirical study on the selection of the location of the airport was analyzed, with ten alternatives and seven criteria. The outcomes of investigation of normalization effects in regard to the PROMETHEE II method prove that they do have an impact on the final rankings.

Particle swarm optimization system based on the distributed architecture over multiple sub-swarms has shown its efficiency for static optimization and has not been studied to solve dynamic multi-objective problems (DMOPs). When solving DMOP, tracking the best solutions over time and ensuring good exploitation and exploration are the main challenging tasks. This study proposes a novel Dynamic Pareto bi-level Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (DPb-MOPSO) algorithm including two parallel optimization levels. At the first level, all solutions are managed in a single search space. When a dynamic change is successfully detected in the objective values, the Pareto ranking operator is used to enable a multiple sub-swarm’ subdivisions and processing which drives the second level of enhanced exploitation. A dynamic handling strategy based on random detectors is used to track the changes of the objective function due to time-varying parameters. A response strategy consisting in re-evaluate all unimproved solutions and replacing them with newly generated ones is also implemented. Inverted generational distance, mean inverted generational distance, and hypervolume difference metrics are used to assess the DPb-MOPSO performances. All quantitative results are analyzed using Friedman's analysis of variance while the Lyapunov theorem is used for stability analysis. Compared with several multi-objective evolutionary algorithms, the DPb-MOPSO is robust in solving 21 complex problems over a range of changes in both the Pareto optimal set and Pareto optimal front. For 13 UDF and ZJZ functions, DPb-MOPSO can solve 8/13 and 7/13 on IGD and HVD with moderate changes. For the 8 FDA and dMOP benchmarks, DPb-MOPSO was able to resolve 4/8 with severe change on MIGD, and 5/8 for moderate and slight changes. However, for the 3 kind of environmental changes, DPb-MOPSO assumes 4/8 of the solving function on IGD and HVD metrics. © 2020, CC BY.

The purpose of the presented research is estimation of the performance characteristics of the economic Total-Body Jagiellonian-PET system (TB-J-PET) constructed from plastic scintillators. The characteristics are estimated according to the NEMA NU-2-2018 standards utilizing the GATE package. The simulated detector consists of 24 modules, each built out of 32 plastic scintillator strips (each with cross section of 6 mm times 30 mm and length of 140 cm or 200 cm) arranged in two layers in regular 24-sided polygon circumscribing a circle with the diameter of 78.6 cm. For the TB-J-PET with an axial field-of-view (AFOV) of 200 cm, a spatial resolutions of 3.7 mm (transversal) and 4.9 mm (axial) are achieved. The noise equivalent count rate (NECR) peak of 630 kcps is expected at 30 kBq/cc activity concentration and the sensitivity at the center amounts to 38 cps/kBq. The scatter fraction is estimated to 36.2 %. The values of scatter fraction and spatial resolution are comparable to those obtained for the state-of-the-art clinical PET scanners and the first total-body tomographs: uExplorer and PennPET. With respect to the standard PET systems with AFOV in the range from 16 cm to 26 cm, the TB-J-PET is characterized by an increase in NECR approximately by factor of 4 and by the increase of the whole-body sensitivity by factor of 12.6 to 38. The time-of-flight resolution for the TB-J-PET is expected to be at the level of CRT = 240 ps (FWHM). For the TB-J-PET with an axial field-of-view (AFOV) of 140 cm, an image quality of the reconstructed images of a NEMA IEC phantom was presented with a contrast recovery coefficient (CRC) and a background variability parameters. The increase of the whole-body sensitivity and NECR estimated for the TB-J-PET with respect to current commercial PET systems makes the TB-J-PET a promising cost-effective solution for the broad clinical applications of total-body PET scanners. Objective: The aim of this work is to investigate the feasibility of the Jagiellonian Positron Emission Tomography (J-PET) scanner for intra-treatment proton beam range monitoring. Approach: The Monte Carlo simulation studies with GATE and PET image reconstruction with CASToR were performed in order to compare six J-PET scanner geometries (three dual-heads and three cylindrical). We simulated proton irradiation of a PMMA phantom with a Single Pencil Beam (SPB) and Spread-Out Bragg Peak (SOBP) of various ranges. The sensitivity and precision of each scanner were calculated, and considering the setup's cost-effectiveness, we indicated potentially optimal geometries for the J-PET scanner prototype dedicated to the proton beam range assessment. Main results: The investigations indicate that the double-layer cylindrical and triple-layer double-head configurations are the most promising for clinical application. We found that the scanner sensitivity is of the order of 10-5 coincidences per primary proton, while the precision of the range assessment for both SPB and SOBP irradiation plans was found below 1 mm. Among the scanners with the same number of detector modules, the best results are found for the triple-layer dual-head geometry. Significance: We performed simulation studies demonstrating that the feasibility of the J-PET detector for PET-based proton beam therapy range monitoring is possible with reasonable sensitivity and precision enabling its pre-clinical tests in the clinical proton therapy environment. Considering the sensitivity, precision and cost-effectiveness, the double-layer cylindrical and triple-layer dual-head J-PET geometry configurations seem promising for the future clinical application.
