Privacy-preserving explainable AI: a survey

As the adoption of explainable AI(XAI) continues to expand, the urgency to address its privacy implications intensifies. Despite a growing corpus of research in AI privacy and explainability, there is little attention on privacy-preserving model explanations. This article presents the first thorough survey about privacy attacks on model explanations and their countermeasures. Our contribution to this field comprises a thorough analysis of research papers with a connected taxonomy that facilitates the categorization of privacy attacks and countermeasures based on the targeted explanations. This work also includes an initial investigation into the causes of privacy leaks. Finally, we discuss unresolved issues and prospective research directions uncovered in our analysis. This survey aims to be a valuable resource for the research community and offers clear insights for those new to this domain. To support ongoing research, we have established an online resource repository, which will be continuously updated with new and relevant findings.

Fuzzy clustering for electric field characterization and its application to thunderstorm interpretability

Changes in the Atmospheric Electric Field Signal(AEFS) are highly correlated with weather changes, especially with thunderstorm activities. However, little attention has been paid to the ambiguous weather information implicit in AEFS changes. In this paper, a Fuzzy C-Means(FCM) clustering method is used for the first time to develop an innovative approach to characterize the weather attributes carried by AEFS. First, a time series dataset is created in the time domain using AEFS attributes. The AEFS-based weather is evaluated according to the time-series Membership Degree(MD) changes obtained by inputting this dataset into the FCM. Second, thunderstorm intensities are reflected by the change in distance from a thunderstorm cloud point charge to an AEF apparatus. Thus, a matching relationship is established between the normalized distance and the thunderstorm dominant MD in the space domain. Finally, the rationality and reliability of the proposed method are verified by combining radar charts and expert experience. The results confirm that this method accurately characterizes the weather attributes and changes in the AEFS, and a negative distance-MD correlation is obtained for the first time. The detection of thunderstorm activity by AEF from the perspective of fuzzy set technology provides a meaningful guidance for interpretable thunderstorms.

An Experimental Study on Dynamic Lifelong Learning with GPT for Mitigating Catastrophic Forgetting in Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis

GPT is widely recognized as one of the most versatile and powerful large language models, excelling across diverse domains. However, its significant computational demands often render it economically unfeasible for individuals and small businesses, underscoring the need for efficient, domainspecific alternatives. In Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis (ABSA), existing models are typically optimized for single domains, facing challenges in performing effectively across multiple domains. A key issue, known as "catastrophic forgetting," arises when models trained on one domain lose previously learned knowledge upon exposure to new domain data. This leads to two significant problems: limited cross-domain generalization and difficulty in retaining prior knowledge while learning domain-specific information. To address these challenges, we introduce the Dynamic Lifelong Learning Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis GPT (DllaGPT), a model designed to handle multiple domains while mitigating catastrophic forgetting. Leveraging datasets from four ABSA domains—Laptops, Restaurants, Tweets, and Finance—this study fine-tunes a pretrained GPT model from HuggingFace sequentially across domains. DllaGPT employs a mechanism to retain real data from earlier domains during new domain training, effectively preserving prior knowledge. Experimental results highlight that DllaGPT achieves an average accuracy of 0.85 and a Backward Transfer (BWT) score of -0.09 across the four domains, showcasing its high accuracy and robust lifelong learning capabilities. © 2025 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. MDNET: A Novel Neural Network Based on CNN and Fuzzy Rough Set with Adaptive Parameters for Intrusion Detection in the Internet of Things

The internet of things (IoT) has become increasingly widespread, finding applications in various fields like transportation fleet management, smart homes, traffic management, and smart greenhouses. However, a significant concern with IoT devices is the vast amount of data they store. Sensitive data, including personal information, requires strong security, as unauthorized access can lead to cyberattacks. Attack scenarios, including data theft, system hijacking, and unauthorized access, pose significant threats, making early detection crucial to minimize potential damage. This paper proposes the MDNET neural network for enhanced IoT intrusion detection. The MDNET network aims to achieve high accuracy in detecting IoT network intrusions without requiring manual hyperparameter tuning. To achieve this, the CEO Optimization Algorithm was employed to adaptively select the hyperparameters for the proposed network. Our proposed method employs fuzzy rough set theory to select appropriate features from the network traffic dataset. This process removes features significantly impacted by noise, thereby enhancing the overall efficiency of the *** proposed approach was evaluated using five standard metrics accuracy, average precision, Kappa coefficient, Hamming loss, and Jaccard similarity;compared with seven existing models (FWP-SVM-GA, FBiNN, GA-FR-CNN, APSO-CNN, LSTM, GRU, ANN). The proposed method achieved an impressive 99.57% accuracy, 99.7% average-precision, and 0.99 Kappa coefficient, significantly outperforming the best-performing existing algorithm (FBiNN) with 97.28% accuracy and 0.96 Kappa coefficient. Additionally, MDNET exhibited lower Hamming loss (0.003) and a higher Jaccard similarity (0.99), confirming its superior classification accuracy and robustness in IoT attack detection. ©2025 The author(s).

Advancing Smart Sensor Networks and Carbon-Based Biosensors through Artificial Intelligence: A Deep Learning Approach to Optoelectronic Device Innovation

This research proposes a novel artificial decision-marking framework suitable for modern smart sensor networks and carbon-based biosensor systems which deals with uncertainty and the peculiarity of the data. To achieve the goals, the approach relies on the optoelectronic properties of carbon nanomaterials and already combines AI and deep learning. This raises the level of sensing, real-time data fusion, and adaptive decision-making within the environment to unprecedented levels. To enhance sensor evaluation in sensor manufacturing, we take a step further and implement Dombi Interval Valued Intuitionistic Fuzzy Sets (D-IVIFs) and work with Dombi Interval Valued Intuitionistic Fuzzy Dombi Bonferroni Mean (D-IVIFDBM) for hierarchical decision-making. Moreover, two Multi-Attribute Group Decision Making (MAGDM) methods IVIFWDBM and IVIFWDGBM are developed for expert evaluation aggregation in selection tasks of different criteria to enhance selection accuracy. These experiments did demonstrate improvements in decision accuracy as well as better overall performance than conventional models of comparison. The numerical experiments showed that these methods are more effective than traditional MAGDM models. Introducing such an advanced decision framework in deep learning systems enables improved adaptability, security, and resilience in next-generation sensor networks and biosensor devices. The new paradigm enables real-time signal interpretation and adaptive learning and provides effective solutions in harsh environments where severe fluctuations are common. This study assists in addressing the discrepancy between conceptual decision models and actual physical achievements in smart sensing, which will foster the development of more sophisticated and efficient optoelectronic devices. © 2013 IEEE.

Abnormal event detection in video surveillance is critical for security, traffic management, and industrial monitoring applications. This paper introduces an innovative methodology for anomaly detection in video data, encompassing three primary stages: preprocessing, feature learning, and anomaly detection. We employ background subtraction and noise reduction during preprocessing to refine the data. The feature-learning stage involves training an LSTM autoencoder to capture the essential features of normal video sequences. For anomaly detection, we map video data to a lower-dimensional space (latent code) and compare it against the distribution of codes from normal sequences. We determine regularity scores and identify local minima points exceeding a specified threshold while scrutinizing shadows between adjacent maxima to confirm and pinpoint anomalies. When tested on the CUHK Avenue and UMN datasets, our methodology demonstrated performance with AUCs of 93.8% and 94.1%, respectively, outperforming several baseline models. Our results show the high precision of our method that can detect anomalies, highlighting its potential advantages that it can achieve for enhancing systems of surveillance. © The Author(s) 2025.

Artificial intelligence-inspired comprehensive framework for desertification prediction

Desertification greatly affects land deterioration, farming efficiency, economic growth, and health, especially in Gulf nations. Climate change has worsened desertification, making developmental issues in the area even more difficult. This research presents an enhanced framework utilizing the Internet of Things (IoT) for ongoing monitoring, data gathering, and analysis to evaluate desertification patterns. The framework utilizes Bayesian Belief Networks (BBN) to categorize IoT data, while a low-latency processing method on edge computing platforms enables effective detection of desertification trends. The classified data is subsequently analyzed using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) optimized with a Genetic Algorithm (GA) for forecasting decisions. Using cloud computing infrastructure, the ANN-GA model examines intricate data connections to forecast desertification risk elements. Moreover, the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model is employed to predict desertification over varied time intervals. Experimental simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the suggested framework, attaining enhanced performance in essential metrics: Temporal Delay (103.68 s), Classification Efficacy—Sensitivity (96.44 %), Precision (95.56 %), Specificity (96.97 %), and F-Measure (96.69 %)—Predictive Efficiency—Accuracy (97.76 %) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) (1.95 %)—along with Reliability (93.73 %) and Stability (75 %). The results of classification effectiveness and prediction performance emphasize the framework's ability to detect high-risk zones and predict the severity of desertification. This innovative method improves the comprehension of desertification processes and encourages sustainable land management practices, reducing the socio-economic impacts of desertification and bolstering at-risk ecosystems. The enhancement of Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) is required to ensure protection of network resources and services. This is a hot research topic, especially in the presence of advanced intrusions and attacks. This paper provides a comparison between Distributed Cumulative Histogram (DCH) as a Feature Selection (FS) technique, information Gain Ratio (IGR) FS and wrapper-based FS in terms of accuracy and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The utilization of DCH of the traffic instances in normal and attack cases allows us to compare the traffic charts. We can observe the difference between effective features and less effective ones. We verify the feasibility of using DCH as an FS technique in the field of anomaly detection with just six selected features giving more accurate results with most classifiers compared to the IGR and wrapper-based FS. We applied our experiments on the modern UNSW dataset with the WEKA simulation platform that contains a group of classification, feature reduction and selection techniques. © The Author(s) 2024.

A Package Level Regression Test Selection Approach for Java Software Systems

Regression testing of software systems is an important and critical activity but can be expensive and resource-intensive. An approach to enhance its efficiency is Regression Test Selection (RTS), which selectively re-executes a subset of relevant tests that are impacted by code modifications. Previous studies on static and dynamic RTS for Java software have shown that selecting tests at the class level is more effective than using finer granularities like methods or statements. Nevertheless, RTS at the package level, which is a coarser granularity than class level, has not been thoroughly investigated or evaluated for Java projects. To address this gap, we propose PKRTS, a static package-level RTS approach that utilizes the structural dependencies of the software system under test to construct a package-level dependency graph. PKRTS analyzes dependencies in the graph and identifies relevant tests that can reach modified packages, i.e., packages containing altered classes. In contrast to conventional static RTS techniques, PKRTS implicitly considers dynamic dependencies, such as Java reflection and virtual method calls, among classes belonging to the same package by treating all those classes as a single cohesive node in the dependency graph. We evaluated PKRTS on 885 revisions of 9 open-source Java projects, with its performance compared to Ekstazi, a state-of-the-art dynamic class-level approach, and STARTS, a state-of-the-art static class-level approach. We used Ekstazi as the baseline to measure the safety and precision violations of PKRTS and STARTS. The results indicated that PKRTS outperformed static class-level RTS in terms of safety violation, which measures the extent to which relevant test cases are missed. PKRTS showed an average safety violation of 2.29%, while STARTS recorded 5.94%.
