Cardiac arrhythmias pose a significant challenge to health care, requiring accurate and reliable detection methods to enable early diagnosis and treatment. However, traditional ECG beat classification methods often lack robustness and fail to generalize effectively to diverse clinical scenarios, particularly when using single-lead-I recordings, which are less studied compared to lead II. To address this gap, this paper proposes a novel method that combines deep learning and empirical mode decomposition (EMD) for arrhythmia detection using single-lead-I ECG recordings obtained with electrodes on each hand. The hybrid model comprises 149 layers of one-dimensional convolution, max pooling, and residual blocks. By leveraging EMD, it classifies ECG beats into normal beats, premature ventricular contractions, and atrial premature beats with high sensitivity (99.86%, 99.72%, and 99.84%, respectively) using the first four intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). The proposed method is applicable in clinical and out-of-hospital monitoring scenarios, and an accompanying web application provides real-time analysis and diagnostic results. Keyloggers are malicious software programs that record keystrokes of users without their consent or knowledge. They can steal sensitive information like credit card numbers and passwords. They pose a significant threat to users’ privacy and security since they capture keystroke data. Keylogger detection systems play a vital role in safeguarding users from cyberattacks and mitigating the potential harm caused by keyloggers. Keylogger detection systems employing deep learning have been widely used for identifying and mitigating cyber threats associated with keyloggers. However, they struggle to identify new or unfamiliar keylogger samples. This study aims to explore deep learning techniques with feature selection model to detect keylogger. This study employs Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) using a collection of known keylogger dataset. Furthermore, a correlation-based feature extraction method was applied to identify the most relevant features for the model, highlighting the importance of specific features, such as URG flag Count, ACK flag count, and Idle Mean, in differentiating between benign and keylog classes. The proposed model demonstrates superior accuracy of 0.8763 and precision of 0.8569 compared to a baseline model using Logistic Regression (LR) 0.7721 and 0.7407, respectively, indicating a better balance between accurate classification and minimizing false negatives and false positives. The findings from this study help to improve keylogger detection methods, making them more powerful and efficient. These results suggest that a keylogger-based detection system employing a deep learning approach can be a valuable tool for addressing the complex and evolving landscape of cyber threats related to keylogging. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

The increasing density of mobile networks has made the identification of optimal new coverage sites a critical challenge for mobile operators. Traditional methods relying on manual inspections and council plans are labour-intensive and insufficient. This study addresses this issue by leveraging data science and machine learning techniques to predict the suitability of new mobile cell sites. Utilizing data from Radio Spectrum Management New Zealand and Stats New Zealand, the study employs Random Forest as Machine learning model. Key factors considered include existing operator information and population density. The methodology integrates data cleaning, feature engineering, and model training, with validation performed using Power BI. Results demonstrate an accuracy of 84.62% for the Random Forest model, highlighting the importance of geographical location and population density in site suitability predictions. This approach will streamline the site selection process and enhance service quality, positioning operators as leaders in underserved areas. © 2025 IEEE.

Smart Healthcare is witnessing widespread implementation of Internet-of-Medical-Things (IoMT) devices. These devices play a crucial role in collecting vast amounts of data from various smart healthcare applications, which are then processed to facilitate informed decision-making. Edge computing has emerged as a valuable platform offering computational resources to handle this data collection efficiently. However, a critical challenge arises from the inappropriate and inefficient classical approaches to fair resource allocation in these energy-intensive, short battery life and delay-intolerant portable devices. To address this issue, this paper presents a Lightweight Adaptive Learning Offloading Algorithm designed to optimize energy and latency in an edge computing environment. The proposed algorithm formulates the problem as a combined minimization of latency and energy costs while satisfying constraints related to limited battery capacity and service latency deadlines. To achieve this, the algorithm employs the adaptation parameters (α, β, γ), and the tradeoff target (C′) is configured based on the specific task requirements. Experimental results demonstrate the advantages of the proposed scheme, including energy savings and minimized latency in an edge environment. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme under a realistic scenario using the iFogSim2 simulator. © 2025 SPIE.

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) involves the real-time gathering of information from physical devices and technologies for improved perception and management. To ensure information transmission security, an efficient and secure cryptography scheme is needed, especially for devices under resource constraints. In this paper, a heterogeneous signcryption (HSC) scheme is designed to meet security requirements in the IIoT environment. This construction employs a heterogeneous system, with the sender using certificateless cryptography (CLC) to effectively solve the key escrow problem in identity-based cryptography (IBC) and the certificate management problem in public key infrastructure (PKI). The receiver, on the other hand, uses IBC to settle the certificate management issue in PKI. The scheme supports formal security proof in the random oracle model (ROM). Furthermore, the detailed performance analysis demonstrates that the scheme has advantages in terms of energy consumption and computation overhead, making it suitable for the IIoT environment.

This paper presents a comprehensive framework for activity recognition and anomaly detection in smart home environments, targeting applications in convenience, efficiency, responsiveness, and healthcare. The proposed framework incorporates explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) to interpret feature impacts on learning models and optimize feature selection for activity recognition and anomaly detection. The study examines the recognition of two activity sets: Activities Set I, comprising 8 activities, and Activities Set II, comprising 11 activities. Various machine learning models (random forest (RF), decision tree (DT), and XGBoost (XGB)) are employed, along with an ensemble voting classifier (EVC) with these machine learning. EVC achieved 91% accuracy for Activities Set I and 90–91% accuracy for Activities Set II. The model demonstrated strong precision, recall, and F1-score across most classes. For anomaly detection, the Isolation Forest and H2O Isolation Forest Estimator algorithms are utilized to uncover irregularities in daily routines. The Isolation Forest identified anomalies in activities such as chores and desk-related tasks, while the H2O Isolation Forest Estimator detected no anomalies in either activity set. This study underscores the potential of the proposed framework to enhance smart home functionality and highlights avenues for future research and system improvements. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

Multi-modal neuroimaging analysis is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of brain function and pathology, as it allows for the integration of different imaging techniques, thus overcoming the limitations of individual modalities. However, the high costs and limited availability of certain modalities pose significant challenges. To address these issues, this paper proposed the Condition-Aligned Temporal Diffusion (CATD) framework for end-To-end cross-modal synthesis of neuroimaging, enabling the generation of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)-detected Blood Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) signals from more accessible Electroencephalography (EEG) signals. By constructing Conditionally Aligned Block (CAB), heterogeneous neuroimages are aligned into a potential space, achieving a unified representation that provides the foundation for cross-modal transformation in neuroimaging. The combination with the constructed Dynamic Time-Frequency Segmentation (DTFS) module also enables the use of EEG signals to improve the temporal resolution of BOLD signals, thus augmenting the capture of the dynamic details of the brain. Experimental validation demonstrated that the framework improves the accuracy of brain activity state prediction by 9.13% (reaching 69.8%), enhances the diagnostic accuracy of brain disorders by 4.10% (reaching 99.55%), effectively identifies abnormal brain regions, enhancing the temporal resolution of BOLD signals. The proposed framework establishes a new paradigm for cross-modal synthesis of neuroimaging by unifying heterogeneous neuroimaging data into a potential representation space, showing promise in medical applications such as improving Parkinson's disease prediction and identifying abnormal brain regions. © 2025 IEEE.

An Experimental Study on Dynamic Lifelong Learning with GPT for Mitigating Catastrophic Forgetting in Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis

GPT is widely recognized as one of the most versatile and powerful large language models, excelling across diverse domains. However, its significant computational demands often render it economically unfeasible for individuals and small businesses, underscoring the need for efficient, domainspecific alternatives. In Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis (ABSA), existing models are typically optimized for single domains, facing challenges in performing effectively across multiple domains. A key issue, known as "catastrophic forgetting," arises when models trained on one domain lose previously learned knowledge upon exposure to new domain data. This leads to two significant problems: limited cross-domain generalization and difficulty in retaining prior knowledge while learning domain-specific information. To address these challenges, we introduce the Dynamic Lifelong Learning Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis GPT (DllaGPT), a model designed to handle multiple domains while mitigating catastrophic forgetting. Leveraging datasets from four ABSA domains—Laptops, Restaurants, Tweets, and Finance—this study fine-tunes a pretrained GPT model from HuggingFace sequentially across domains. DllaGPT employs a mechanism to retain real data from earlier domains during new domain training, effectively preserving prior knowledge. Experimental results highlight that DllaGPT achieves an average accuracy of 0.85 and a Backward Transfer (BWT) score of -0.09 across the four domains, showcasing its high accuracy and robust lifelong learning capabilities. © 2025 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. Offsets Reconstruction Method for Clock Skew Measurement Over High-Jitter Communication

Measuring clock skew of devices over a network fully relies on the offsets, the differences between sending and receiving times. Offsets that shape a thick line are the most ideal one as their slope is directly the clock skew sought. When some outliers separate from the thick line due to higher delay jitter, current advanced approaches use the lower bound or the majority of offsets to derive accurate clock skew. However, outliers in offsets that shape parallel dotted lines, reduce the availability of offsets in the lower region, and scatter widely the offsets from their majority zone. These conditions drive the current skew estimation approaches to lose their accuracy. This paper then developed a new method, which reconstructs back the outliers into their origin positions, in order to provide ideal offsets for clock skew measurement. The experimental evaluations have demonstrated that the clock skew accuracy of dotted-lines offsets tampered by outliers was improved from 2.1 to 0.9 ppm by the proposed reconstruction method. For a broader purpose, the reconstruction method has been adjusted to be implemented also on non-dotted-lines offsets. The robustness of the proposed method for this case has also been exhibited by the very ideal reconstructed offsets that shape like a thick line. © The Author(s) 2025.

TEXCEL: text encryption with elliptic curve cryptography for enhanced security

Elliptic curve cryptography has emerged as a potent tool for safeguarding data communications. This research paper addresses the problem of traditional text encryption methods relying on shared code tables between senders and receivers. This reliance not only adds complexity but also increases the risk of security breaches and requires significant communication overhead. In the present paper, we introduce TEXCEL, an innovative, efficient and authenticated text encryption scheme. TEXCEL begins with a pioneering method for crafting a customized permuted ASCII table elevating cryptographic security by leveraging elliptic curve coordinates as keys. These coordinates serve as seeds for a random number generator ensuring reproducibility. Here, the technique used to map the characters of the message to a point on elliptic curve eliminates the traditional approach of sharing a code table between sender and receiver, thus reducing communication overhead. TEXCEL undergoes a thorough security analysis, including NIST evaluation, key and plaintext sensitivity, and resilience against common attacks like known-ciphertext, known-plaintext, chosen-plaintext, and chosen-ciphertext. To test and validate the proposed methodology, experimental results present that TEXCEL demonstrates plaintext sensitivity exceeding 98%, high randomness, and a robust key space. Additionally, encryption and decryption of a 5000-character text takes only 0.027 s and 0.007 s respectively, with a cipher size of 9.8 KB, ensuring both security and efficiency. Furthermore, as compared with the existing schemes, TEXCEL shows enhanced resilience against modern cryptanalysis and outperforms existing schemes with a 53.50% improvement in encryption time, 94.86% in decryption time, 53.31% in cipher data size and better plaintext sensitivity.
