This article analyses research published in the previous 11 IFIP TC8 WG 8.6 conferences held between 1993 and 2008. Analysis of the published material includes examining variables such as most active authors, citation analysis, universities associated with the most publications, geographic diversity, and authors' backgrounds. The keyword analysis suggests that IFIP WG 8.6 research has evolved from examining basic issues such as organizational impact of technology adoption and technology transfer to contemporary issues such as open innovation. We suggest this research has implications for researchers, conference organizers, and research institutions. © IFIP International Federation for information Processing 2010.

Website Personalization is one of strategic technique in delivering services in online applications. A part of process for building personalization applications is to collect particular information from the user which involves information sharing. However, the awareness about privacy concerns and security threats have caused to non-sharing behavior among the Internet Users. This situation have caused website personalization cannot be built to serve its purposes. This paper aims to investigate the people's behavior and to study the propensity of information sharing attitude in two different environments and cultures. The two environments are between real-life and online while the two cultures are between Malaysian and non-Malaysian. Since this is an exploratory study, interview with five (5) persons have been conducted. The qualitative technique that chooses was recommended for any exploratory study. The findings of this study explained the understanding of behaviors and the factors of information Sharing. The factors are the cultural factors, the platform of sharing and the behavior of information sharing in web personalization. The sharing behavior in two environments and cultures were also compared. The data collected from the interviews have generalizing the speculations and issues in information sharing which have been discussed at the end section of this paper.

In this paper, a new high order circuit model of multi-quantum well vertical-cavity surface-emitting Lasers (VCSEL) based on a modified rate-equation is presented. This model is accounts for both thermal and spatial dependences of VCSEL characteristics. A new logarithmic relation of optical gain on carrier density substitutes for the linear relation in the conventional rate equation for quantum well lasers. A four-term Bessel-series expansion for the VCSEL carrier number is utilized to achieve good accuracy. A zero-order Laguerre-Guassian beam is utilized for describing the photo distribution to simplify the computation. This model can be readily used in SPICE-like circuit simulators. Numerical examples are introduced to replicate the multi-quantum well VCSEL's typical dc, Small-signal and transient operation, including temperature-dependent light-current (LI) curves, modulation responses, and diffusive turn-off transients. Furthermore, we verify our model against other lower order model from reported in the literature.

One fundamental problem in services computing is how to bridge the gap between business requirements and various heterogeneous IT services. This involves eliciting business requirements and building a solution accordingly by reusing available services. While the business requirements are commonly elicited through use cases and scenarios, it is not straightforward to transform the use case model into a service model, and the existing manual approach is cumbersome and error-prone. In this paper, the environment ontology, which is used to model the problem space, is utilized to facilitate the model transformation process. The environment ontology provides a common understanding between business analysts and software engineers. The required software functionalities as well as the available services’ capabilities are described using this ontology. By semi-automatically matching the required capability of each use case to the available capabilities provides by services, a use case is realized by that set of services. At the end of this paper, a fictitious case study was used to illustrate how this approach works.

This paper presents the utilization of super resolution algorithms for the indoor positioning applications in order to estimate Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) and distances using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) transceiver. Optimal reduction in Distance Measurement Error (DME) is achieved. We have utilized OFDM/Single Carrier-Decision Feedback Equalizer (OFDM/SC-DFE) signal structure presented in our previous works. The super resolution algorithms Estimation of Signal Parameters via Rotational Invariance Technique (ESPRIT), Root Multiple Signal Classification (Root-MUSIC) and Matrix Pencil (MP) are compared for DME estimation. We have applied Minimum Descriptive Length (MDL) criterion to these algorithms, that provides optimized estimate of the length of actual Channel Impulse Response (CIR) by eliminating the noise component from the dispersive CIR. Our scheme is based on two different antennas used to transmit the pre-half-zero-carriers and post-half-zero-carriers OFDM symbols respectively, mapped to multiple carriers using Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) system and received by the object to be positioned. © 2010 ACM.

The survey on software engineering excellence (SEE) was designed and conducted in 2005, 2006 and 2007 with Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan. In the survey the software engineering capability was measured from the seven viewpoints, i.e., deliverables, project management, quality assurance, process improvement, research and development, human development, and customer contacts. For the panel analysis, based on the SEE surveys we integrated 233 valid responses for the three years into a new database and identified 151 unique IT firms. In this paper we focus on the 76 independent vendors and investigate the relationships among the factors of SEE for the three years. And we conducted panel analysis of the seven factors of SEE for the three years to clarify how the previous factors of SEE influence the following factors of SEE in a year, year by year, and mid-term. Based on the result of panel analysis, first, most of factors of SEE in the previous year had significant positive influence on the same factors of SEE in the following year. Second, in a year there are some missing paths in the downstream toward deliverables as the terminal factor from research and development, contact with customers, and process improvement. Third, some factors of SEE in the previous year had significant positive influence on the different factors of SEE in the following year. Fourth, however, there were some negative paths, which implied that the effort on the factor did not pay off in the short term.

The adequate testing of black-box components is an important basis before they will be reused in the approach of Component Based software Development. The test-data generation and test adequacy ensuring are difficult issues for the unavailability of the source code of black-box components. In this paper, an extended component interface specification model is proposed to support the component understanding, testing and reuse. Then the function of different kinds of specification elements in testing is defined. Based on the syntactic and semantic specifications, the proposed test-data generation method can produce test suite meeting a certain mutation score, which is viewed as a kind of effective test adequacy criterion. Finally, some experiments were carried and the results have shown that the different kinds of specification can support the testing of black-box components.

Recently, software quality evaluation based on ISO/IEC 9126 and ISO/IEC 14598 has been used widely. However, these standards for software quality don't provide practical guidelines to apply the quality model and the evaluation process to component based software. This paper presents a multi-dimension quality model and a quantitative quality evaluation model for components and component based software. Particularly, our model provides the weights of quality characteristics and sub-characteristics using analytic hierarchical process technique. We also present the evaluation process using different methods for component developers, reusers and the third party. As a result, we believe that the proposed model will be helpful to evaluate component quality.

This paper discusses signal integrity (SI) issues and signalling techniques for Through Silicon Via (TSV) interconnects in 3-D Integrated Circuits (ICs). Field-solver extracted parasitics of TSVs have been employed in Spice simulations to investigate the effect of each parasitic component on performance metrics such as delay and crosstalk and identify a reduced-order electrical model that captures all relevant effects. We show that in dense TSV structures voltage-mode (VM) signalling does not lend itself to achieving high data-rates, and that current-mode (CM) signalling is more effective for high throughput signalling as well as jitter reduction. Data rates, energy consumption and coupled noise for the different signalling modes are extracted.

Fuzzy inference systems are of great interest to provide a consistent mathematical framework for the representation of imprecision in relation to objects, relationships, knowledge and aims, and are viewed as powerful tools for reasoning and decision-making. In this paper, we survey several fuzzy approaches in magnetic resonances image processing, with an aim to develop and validate multidimensional segmentation and filtering methodology for future research. We also briefly review a number of advances of fuzzy set theory in the MR image processing application domain.
