Density-based and grid-based clustering are two main clustering approaches. The former is famous for its capability of discovering clusters of various shapes and eliminating noises, while the latter is well known for its high speed. Combination of the two approaches seems to provide better clustering results. To the best of our knowledge, however, all existing algorithms that combine density-based clustering and grid-based clustering take cells as atomic units, in the sense that either all objects in a cell belong to a cluster or no object in the cell belong to any cluster. This requires the cells to be small enough to ensure the fine resolution of results. In high-dimensional spaces, however, the number of cells can be very large when cells are small, which would make the clustering process extremely costly. On the other hand, the number of neighbors of a cell grows exponentially with the dimensionality of datasets, which makes the complexity increase further. In this paper, we present a new approach that takes objects (or points) as the atomic units, so that the restriction of cell size can be relaxed without degrading the resolution of clustering results. In addition, a concept of ith-order neighbors is introduced to avoid considering the exponential number of neighboring cells. By considering only low-order neighbors, our algorithm is very efficient while losing only a little bit of accuracy. Experiments on synthetic and public data show that our algorithm can cluster high-dimensional data effectively and efficiently. © 2004 IEEE.

An architecture design of the intelligent agent for speech recognition and translation is presented in this paper. The design involves the agent architecture and the method of the agent is used. The architecture design shows the relationship between the intelligent agent and speech recognition also translation. The intelligent agent for speech recognition is called S-AGENT and T-AGENT for translation. The purpose of the S-AGENT is to facilitate for transmitting the speech data via Internet or network. The S-AGENT is acting as a data transmit control to ensure the transmitted speech data is securely delivered. The task of the T-AGENT is different from the S-AGENT. The T-AGENT is acting as information retrieval. It processes the output from the speech recognition and translates the output based on its information memory database. If the information cannot be found on its memory, it searches the information required from the database dictionary provided. At the same time, it learns the information and saves the information to its memory for the future purpose.

In recent years the Olympic Games have undergone vast criticism due to perceived subjective scoring in judged events, as for example figure skating and gymnastics. Judges' scores may be influenced by favoritism, human error, or possibly corruption. Audience participation in scoring represents a promising approach to meet these problems. In this paper we present an audience voting system that utilizes the natural behavior of sports spectators: clapping and cheering. The system consists of wireless motion sensors and microphones that enable spectators to cast their vote in real time. The sensors are worn by audience members and determine the clapping frequency of each participant. This facilitates continuous influence on the score throughout an athlete's performance. The audience score is presented on wall-sized stadium displays and might be contrasted with the judges' scores to encourage audience engagement. © 2004 ACM.

The symbol-wise mutual information between the binary inputs of a channel encoder and the soft-outputs of a LogAPP decoder, i.e., the a-posteriori log-likelihood ratios (LLRs), is analyzed. This mutual information can be expressed as the expectation of a function of solely the absolute values of the a-posteriori LLRs. This result provides a simple and elegant method for computing the mutual information by simulation. As opposed to the conventional method, explicit measurements of histograms of the soft-outputs are not necessary. In fact, online estimation is possible, and bits having different statistical properties need not be treated separately. As a direct application, the computation of extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) charts is considered.

Adapted from the concept of views in databases, workflow views are derived form workflows as a fundamental support for workflow inter-operability and visibility by external parties in a web services environment. However, because of the implementation difficulties of views in OODB systems, it is tough to realize workflow views in objected-oriented workflow management systems (OO WFMS). In this paper, we adopt the object deputy model to support the realization of workflow views in OO WFMS. The detailed definitions are given based on a reference model of an OO WFMS, namely ADOME-WFMS. Furthermore, we introduce E-ADOME, which enables the implementation of workflow views in the web services environment. © Springer-Verlag 2004.

The current debate about the teaching of data structures is hampered because, as a community, we usually debate specifics about data structure implementations and libraries, when the real level of disagreement remains implicit - the intent behind our teaching. This paper presents a phenomenographic study of the intent of CS educators for teaching data structures in CS2. Based on interviews with Computer Science educators and analysis of CS literature, we identified five categories of intent: developing transferable thinking, improving students' programming skills, knowing "what's under the hood", knowledge of software libraries, and component thinking. The CS community needs to first debate at the level of these categories before moving to more specific issues. This study also serves as an example of how phenomenographic analysis can be used to inform debate on syllabus design in general. Copyright 2004 ACM.

Wireless sensor network technology promises to reveal fine-grained, dynamic changes in monitored variables of an outdoor landscape. But there are significant problems to be overcome in translating this vision to working systems. This paper describes the design and implementation of a reactive, event driven network for environmental monitoring of soil moisture and evaluates the effectiveness of this solution. A novel feature of our solution is its reactivity to the environment: when rain falls and soil moisture is changing rapidly, measurements are collected frequently, whereas during dry periods, between rainfall events, measurements are collected much less often. Reactivity allows us to focus on dynamic responses and limit the amount of useless data gathered, as well as improving robustness and network lifetime. The main contribution of the paper is to demonstrate that a reactive sensor network can deliver useful data on soil moisture responses to rainfall. Field trial results on the reactivity, robustness and longevity of the network are evaluated, and future improvements proposed.

Change requests are often formulated into concepts or features that a maintainer can understand. One of the main issues faced by a maintainer is to know and locate "where does this program implement feature X". However, these features are implicitly available in the code and scattered elsewhere that make them undoubtedly difficult to manage. A technique called software reconnaissance was originally inspired by industrial maintainers about the need for better ways of locating software features in large systems. This paper presents the authors' experience in using the software reconnaissance technique and tool called RECON2, developed by the university of West Florida. Our objective is to understand how the technique and tool work and to further suggest some enhancements with respect to software understanding strategies. © 2003 IEEE.

Being able to formulate useful SQL queries is a fundamental skill required by many software development professionals. Mastering this skill is a difficult process, requiring considerable practice and effort on the part of the student. In addition, assessment of SQL query formulation skills is a process that does not appear to have been thoroughly researched, and numerous problems are inherent to the approaches commonly taken in universities to do this assessment. This paper examines two of these approaches, identifies problems with them, and then proposes another method of assessment. The way that students are assessed in a subject has a significant impact on their learning approach, and it is crucial that assessment tasks are carefully designed and implemented to inculcate a deep learning experience. The online assessment method proposed is described, evaluated, and the challenges and benefits of using it are discussed. This is a work-in-progress and the conclusion states that further validation is needed, and there is opportunity for additional research and development in this particular area of assessment.
