Industrial revolution 4.0 in water supply, wastewater and stormwater management: opportunities, challenges, and impacts

Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) is the revolution that promotes customized and flexible mass production technologies in automation and manufacturing processes. The application of industrial revolution 4.0, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Cyber-Physical System (CPS), and big data, are used in the water industry to provide better water quality, accurate real-time data, etc. This paper compiles IR 4.0 technology applications, advantages, disadvantages, impacts, and challenges in the water sector, including water supply, wastewater treatment, and stormwater management. It is found that the current water industry is facing a few challenges, such as managing water services, balancing water costs with energy prices, maintaining aging water and wastewater infrastructure, and environmental issues. However, with the application of numerous IR 4.0 innovations, all the challenges can be solved or minimized. Meanwhile, the advantages and impacts of adopting IR 4.0 in water industries are thoroughly discussed. Despite the numerous advantages of IR 4.0, significant drawbacks have restricted the adoption of IR 4.0 in the water industry. The high start-up cost, reluctance, uncertainty, and problems of adopting IR 4.0 are some key challenges that need to be addressed. Generally, IR 4.0 provides more benefits to the community as it helps improve the water system’s performance and efficiencies and creates a more sustainable environment. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Hybrid Optimization Algorithm for Handwritten Document Enhancement

The Gannet Optimization Algorithm (GOA) and the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) demonstrate strong performance;however, there remains room for improvement in convergence and practical applications. This study introduces a hybrid optimization algorithm, named the adaptive inertia weight whale optimization algorithm and gannet optimization algorithm (AIWGOA), which addresses challenges in enhancing handwritten documents. The hybrid strategy integrates the strengths of both algorithms, significantly enhancing their capabilities, whereas the adaptive parameter strategy mitigates the need for manual parameter setting. By amalgamating the hybrid strategy and parameter-adaptive approach, the Gannet Optimization Algorithm was refined to yield the AIWGOA. Through a performance analysis of the CEC2013 benchmark, the AIWGOA demonstrates notable advantages across various metrics. Subsequently, an evaluation index was employed to assess the enhanced handwritten documents and images, affirming the superior practical application of the AIWGOA compared with other algorithms.

Sleep quality prediction in Internet of Things (IoT) involves leveraging a system of interrelated devices to gather as well as analyse related data. Smart devices like wearable devices or smart mattresses endlessly monitor many parameters such as body movement, heart rate, and environmental situations in bedroom. Real-time recommendations and feedback transported to consumers, allowing them to create informed lifestyle changes for superior sleep hygiene. As IoT ecosystem continues to develop, a combination of various data streams as well as classy analytics holds assurance for further refining sleep quality forecasts and improving overall well-being. The article designs a Bald Eagle Search Algorithm with Hierarchical Deep Learning for Internet of Things Assisted Sleep Quality Recognition (BESHDL-SQP) technique. The purpose of the BESHDL-SQP technique is to recognize and classify the quality of the sleep level in the IoT environment. In the presented BESHDL-SQP technique, the preliminary stage of data pre-processing using min–max normalization involved to normalize the input data. For predicting sleep quality, hierarchical long short-term memory (LSTM) technique exploited. Lastly, BES model utilized for optimal hyperparameter selection of LSTM method which helps in attaining enhanced results. To validate better performance of BESHDL-SQP technique, a huge range of simulation analysis is carried out. A Smart CIoT with Secure Healthcare Framework Using Optimized Deep Recuperator Neural Network Long Short-Term Memory

The healthcare system currently relies on the facility to store and process large amounts of health data, supported by efficient management. The Internet of Things (IoT) has driven the growth of Adroit Healthcare, which has vast data processing capabilities and extensive data collection. The consumer IoT (CIoT), also known as the IoT in the context of individual use cases, is dominated by personal healthcare applications. The remarkable expansion of the CIoT can be attributed to the extensive embrace of wearable technology, facilitating everyday monitoring of vital health indicators like blood pressure, heart rate, and respiration rate. However, the CIoT raises concerns about data security, confidentiality, and customer trust. This study proposes an integrating blockchain and deep learning (DL) approach to promote responsible use of CIoT. The study develops an Intelligent IoT (IIoT) and healthcare diagnostic model, named BT-PWO-DRNN-LSTM, using blockchain technology and Prairie Wolf optimization-based deep recuperator neural network (DRNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM). The BT-PWO-DRNN-LSTM approach includes three key processes: 1) encrypted transactions;2) cryptographic hash feature;and 3) medical diagnosis. The PWO technique is used for secure communication of medical images, the neighborhood catalogue disposition (NCD) technique is used in the cryptographic hash feature operation (CHFO), and the DL approach is employed as a classification algorithm for diagnosing disorders. The use of PWO methodology for secure healthcare communication and optimal parameter fine-tuning highlights the originality of the study. The BT-PWO-DRNN-LSTM prototype showed positive results with high sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy during the diagnostic process. © 2014 IEEE.

Zero-dynamics attack detection based on data association in feedback pathway

This paper considers the security of non-minimum phase systems, a typical kind of cyber-physical systems. Non-minimum phase systems are characterized by unstable zeros in their transfer functions, making them particularly susceptible to disturbances and attacks. The non-minimum phase systems are more vulnerable to zero-dynamics attack (ZDA) than minimum phase systems. ZDA is a stealthy attack strategy that exploits the internal dynamics of a system, remaining undetectable while causing gradual system destabilization. Recent cyber incidents have demonstrated the increasing risk of such hidden attacks in critical infrastructures, such as power grids and transportation systems. This paper first demonstrates that the existing ZDA has the limitation of falling into local convergence, and then proposes an enhanced zero-dynamics attack (EZDA), which overcomes local convergence by diverging system data. Furthermore, this paper presents an autoregressive model which can build the data association between the original data and the forged data. By observing the fluctuations in state values, the presented model can detect not only ZDA, but also EZDA. Finally, numerical simulations and an application example are provided to verify the theoretical results. © 2025

In the modern battlefield environment, it is very important to realize the working pattern recognition of the enemy phased array radar accurately for subsequent accurate jamming and resource scheduling. In view of the existing radar mode recognition methods, there are problems such as insufficient use of feature parameters and difficulty in paying attention to the relationship between various features of radar signals. This paper provides a method of working pattern recognition for phased array radar based on attention mechanism and feature fusion. The radar signal pulse sequence is preprocessed by feature enhancement and feature fusion, and then fed into the deep learning neural network. We propose an improved Deep learning neural network called CBAM-DenseNet, which is a combination of DenseNet module and CBAM (Convolutional Block Attention Module). The algorithm can grasp the relation between each parameter of the radar signal, and then identify the radar working mode effectively. The experimental findings demonstrate that the identification precision of feature fusion and CBAM-DenseNet for each radar working pattern is more than 99%. © 2025 SPIE.

Automatic person identification (API) using human biometrics is essential and highly demanded compared to traditional API methods, where a person is automatically identified using his/her distinct characteristics including speech, fingerprint, iris, handwritten signatures, and others. The fusion of more than one human biometric produces bimodal and multimodal API systems that normally outperform single modality systems. This paper presents our work towards fusing speech and handwritten signatures for developing a bimodal API system, where fusion was conducted at the decision level due to the differences in the type and format of the features extracted. A data set is created that contains recordings of usernames and handwritten signatures of 100 persons (50 males and 50 females), where each person recorded his/her username 30 times and provided his/her handwritten signature 30 times. Consequently, a total of 3000 utterances and 3000 handwritten signatures were collected. The speech API used Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) technique for features extraction and Vector Quantization (VQ) for features training and classification. On the other hand, the handwritten signatures API used global features for reflecting the structure of the hand signature image such as image area, pure height, pure width and signature height and the Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) architecture of Artificial Neural Network for features training and classification. Once the best matches for both the speech and the handwritten signatures API are produced, the fusion process takes place at decision level. It computes the difference between the two best matches for each modality and selects the modality of the maximum difference. Based on our experimental results, the bimodal API obtained an average recognition rate of 96.40%, whereas the speech API and the handwritten signatures API obtained average recognition rates of 92.60% and 75.20%, respectively.
