The free flow of information has been accelerated by the rapid development of social media technology. There has been a significant social and psychological impact on the population due to the outbreak of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the current events being discussed on social media platforms. In order to safeguard societies from this pandemic, studying people's emotions on social media is crucial. As a result of their particular characteristics, sentiment analysis of texts like tweets remains challenging. Sentiment analysis is a powerful text analysis tool. It automatically detects and analyzes opinions and emotions from unstructured data. Texts from a wide range of sources are examined by a sentiment analysis tool, which extracts meaning from them, including emails, surveys, reviews, social media posts, and web articles. To evaluate sentiments, natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning techniques are used, which assign weights to entities, topics, themes, and categories in sentences or phrases. Machine learning tools learn how to detect sentiment without human intervention by examining examples of emotions in text. In a pandemic situation, analyzing social media texts to uncover sentimental trends can be very helpful in gaining a better understanding of society's needs and predicting future trends. We intend to study society's perception of the COVID-19 pandemic through social media using state-of-the-art BERT and Deep CNN models. The superiority of BERT models over other deep models in sentiment analysis is evident and can be concluded from the comparison of the various research studies mentioned in this article. © 2022, CC BY-SA.

CPED: A Large-Scale Chinese Personalized and Emotional Dialogue dataset for Conversational AI

Human language expression is based on the subjective construal of the situation instead of the objective truth conditions, which means that speakers' personalities and emotions after cognitive processing have an important influence on conversation. However, most existing datasets for conversational AI ignore human personalities and emotions, or only consider part of them. It's difficult for dialogue systems to understand speakers' personalities and emotions although large-scale pre-training language models have been widely used. In order to consider both personalities and emotions in the process of conversation generation, we propose CPED, a large-scale Chinese personalized and emotional dialogue dataset, which consists of multi-source knowledge related to empathy and personal characteristic. These knowledge covers gender, Big Five personality traits, 13 emotions, 19 dialogue acts and 10 scenes. CPED contains more than 12K dialogues of 392 speakers from 40 TV shows. We release the textual dataset with audio features and video features according to the copyright claims, privacy issues, terms of service of video platforms. We provide detailed description of the CPED construction process and introduce three tasks for conversational AI, including personality recognition, emotion recognition in conversations as well as personalized and emotional conversation generation. Finally, we provide baseline systems for these tasks and consider the function of speakers' personalities and emotions on conversation. Our motivation is to propose a dataset to be widely adopted by the NLP community as a new open benchmark for conversational AI research. The full dataset is available. © 2022, CC BY-NC-ND.

In this work, the event-triggering-based resilient H_∞ load frequency control (LFC) scheme under denial-of-service (DoS) attacks is developed for multi-area cyber–physical power system (MA-CPPS) with electric vehicles (EVs). In MA-CPPS, the sampled measurements are transmitted through the communication network, which may be subjected to the energy-limited DoS attack with a resilient index of maximum allowable continuous data losses. Meanwhile, a novel adaptive event-triggering mechanism (AETM) characterized by parameters disturbances and dynamic adjustment mechanism of triggering threshold can effectively reduce the occupation of network bandwidth and computational burden in practical operation of sampled-data LFC in MA-CPPS. Hence a sampled-data LFC model of considering energy-limited DoS attack and AETM is established firstly. Then based on a novel AETM transmission interval-dependent loop functional approach, a resilient H_∞ state-feedback controller is designed with guaranteed H_∞ performance and resilient index of energy-limited DoS attack. Finally, the effectiveness and superiority of our proposed scheme are verified by one-area and three-areas LFC CPPS. © 2023 The Authors

The Optica Topical Meeting on Digital Holography and 3D Imaging (DH) was held 14–17 August 2023 in Boston, Massachusetts. The meeting was organized co-jointly with the Optica Imaging Congress. Feature issues based on the DH meeting series have been released by Applied Optics (AO) since 2007. Since 2017, AO and the Journal of the Optical Society of America A (JOSA A) have presented a feature issue in each journal. This feature issues includes 17 papers in AO and 9 in JOSA A. Together they cover a large range of topics, reflecting the rapidly expanding techniques and applications of digital holography and 3D imaging. The upcoming DH Conference (DH 2024) will be held from 3 to 6 June in Paestum, Italy. © 2024 Optica Publishing Group © 2024 Optica Publishing Group.

The rapid development of photo-realistic face generation methods has raised significant concerns in society and academia, highlighting the urgent need for robust and generalizable face forgery detection (FFD) techniques. Although existing approaches mainly capture face forgery patterns using image modality, other modalities like fine-grained noises and texts are not fully explored, which limits the generalization capability of the model. In addition, most FFD methods tend to identify facial images generated by GAN, but struggle to detect unseen diffusion-synthesized ones. To address the limitations, we aim to leverage the cutting-edge foundation model, contrastive language-image pre-training (CLIP), to achieve generalizable diffusion face forgery detection (DFFD). In this paper, we propose a novel multi-modal fine-grained CLIP (MFCLIP) model, which mines comprehensive and fine-grained forgery traces across image-noise modalities via language-guided face forgery representation learning, to facilitate the advancement of DFFD. Specifically, we devise a fine-grained language encoder (FLE) that extracts fine global language features from hierarchical text prompts. We design a multi-modal vision encoder (MVE) to capture global image forgery embeddings as well as fine-grained noise forgery patterns extracted from the richest patch, and integrate them to mine general visual forgery traces. Moreover, we build an innovative plug-and-play sample pair attention (SPA) method to emphasize relevant negative pairs and suppress irrelevant ones, allowing cross-modality sample pairs to conduct more flexible alignment. Extensive experiments and visualizations show that our model outperforms the state of the arts on different settings like cross-generator, cross-forgery, and cross-dataset evaluations. © 2005-2012 IEEE.

Energy is essential for human existence, and its high consumption is a growing concern in today's technology-driven society. Global initiatives aim to reduce energy consumption and pollution by developing and deploying energy-efficient sensing technologies for long-term monitoring, control, automation, security, and interactions. Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) benefit a lot from the continuous monitoring capabilities of these sensing devices, which include medical sensors worn on or implanted in the human body for healthcare monitoring. Despite significant advancements, achieving energy efficiency in WBANs remains a significant challenge. A deep understanding of the WBAN architecture is essential to identify the causes of its energy inefficiency and develop novel energy-efficient solutions. We investigate energy efficiency issues specific to WBANs. We discuss the transformative impact that artificial intelligence and Machine Learning (ML) can have on achieving the energy efficiency of WBANs. Additionally, we explore the potential of emerging technologies such as quantum computing, nano-technology, biocompatible energy harvesting, and Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT) in enabling energy efficiency in WBANs. We focus on WBANs' architecture, hardware, and software components to identify key factors responsible for energy consumption in the WBAN environment. Based on our comprehensive review, we introduce an innovative, energy-efficient three-tier architecture for WBANs that employs ML and edge computing to overcome the limitations inherent in existing energy-efficient solutions. Finally, we summarize the lessons learned and highlight future research directions that will enable the development of energy-efficient solutions for WBANs.

In this report, we summarize the first NTIRE challenge on light field (LF) image super-resolution (SR), which aims at super-resolving LF images under the standard bicubic degradation with a magnification factor of 4. This challenge develops a new LF dataset called NTIRE-2023 for validation and test, and provides a toolbox called BasicLFSR to facilitate model development. Compared with single image SR, the major challenge of LF image SR lies in how to exploit complementary angular information from plenty of views with varying disparities. In total, 148 participants have registered the challenge, and 11 teams have successfully submitted results with PSNR scores higher than the baseline method LF-InterNet [1]. These newly developed methods have set new state-of-the-art in LF image SR, e.g., the winning method achieves around 1 dB PSNR improvement over the existing state-of-the-art method DistgSSR [2]. We report the solutions proposed by the participants, and summarize their common trends and useful tricks. We hope this challenge can stimulate future research and inspire new ideas in LF image SR. © 2023 IEEE.

FEDCSD: A FEDERATED LEARNING BASED APPROACH FOR CODE-SMELL DETECTION

Software quality is critical, as low quality, or "Code smell," increases technical debt and maintenance costs. There is a timely need for a collaborative model that detects and manages code smells by learning from diverse and distributed data sources while respecting privacy and providing a scalable solution for continuously integrating new patterns and practices in code quality management. However, the current literature is still missing such capabilities. This paper addresses the previous challenges by proposing a Federated Learning Code Smell Detection (FedCSD) approach, specifically targeting "God Class," to enable organizations to train distributed ML models while safeguarding data privacy collaboratively. We conduct experiments using manually validated datasets to detect and analyze code smell scenarios to validate our approach. Experiment 1, a centralized training experiment, revealed varying accuracies across datasets, with dataset two achieving the lowest accuracy (92.30%) and datasets one and three achieving the highest (98.90% and 99.5%, respectively). Experiment 2, focusing on cross-evaluation, showed a significant drop in accuracy (lowest: 63.80%) when fewer smells were present in the training dataset, reflecting technical debt. Experiment 3 involved splitting the dataset across 10 companies, resulting in a global model accuracy of 98.34%, comparable to the centralized model’s highest accuracy. The application of federated ML techniques demonstrates promising performance improvements in code-smell detection, benefiting both software developers and researchers. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. An emerging area in data science that has lately gained attention is the virtual population (VP) and synthetic data generation. This field has the potential to significantly affect the healthcare industry by providing a means to augment clinical research databases that have a shortage of subjects. The current study provides a comparative analysis of five distinct approaches for creating virtual data populations from real patient data. The data set utilized for the current analyses involved clinical data collected among patients scheduled for elective coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG). To that end, the five computational techniques employed to augment the given dataset were: (i) Tabular Preset, (ii) Gaussian Copula Model (iii) Generative Adversarial Network based (GAN) Deep Learning data synthesizer (CTGAN), (iv) a variation of the CTGAN Model (Copula GAN), and (v) VAE-based Deep Learning data synthesizer (TVAE). The performance of these techniques was assessed against their effectiveness in producing high-quality virtual data. For this purpose, dataset correlation matrices, cosine similarity distance, density histograms, and kernel density estimation are employed to perform a comparative analysis of each attribute and the respective synthetic equivalent. Our findings demonstrate that Gaussian Copula Model prevails in creating virtual data with consistent distributions (Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) and Chi-Squared (CS) tests equal to 0.9 and 0.98, respectively) and correlation patterns (average cosine similarity equals to 0.95).Clinical Relevance— It has been shown that the use of a VP can increase the predictive performance of a ML model, i.e., above using a smaller non-augmented population.

In biology, it is expected to understand the mechanism of herd development by analyzing crowd behavior. Currently, medaka (Oryzias latipes) is often used when conducting such research because of its ease of breeding and experimentation. However, when conducting such studies, it is very difficult to manually obtain herd data. In this article, in order to analyze the behavior of medaka, we will introduce a method to automatically extract the swimming trajectory of medaka from time-series images and acquire the data necessary for behavior analysis. In particular, the improvement of extraction accuracy is achieved by processing the overlap state and adjoin state of medaka in the image.
