HESS J1843-033 is a very-high-energy gamma-ray source whose origin remains unidentified. This work presents, for the first time, the energy spectrum of gamma rays beyond 100 TeV from the HESS J1843-033 region using the data recorded by the Tibet air shower array and its underground muon detector array. A gamma-ray source with an extension of 0◦. 34 ± 0◦. 12 is successfully detected above 25 TeV at (α, δ) = (281◦. 09 ± 0◦. 10, −3◦. 76 ± 0◦. 09) near HESS J1843-033 with a statistical significance of 6.2 σ, and the source is named TASG J1844-038. The position of TASG J1844-038 is consistent with those of HESS J1843-033, eHWC J1842-035, and LHAASO J1843-0338. The measured gamma-ray energy spectrum in 25 TeV −16(E/40 TeV)−3.26±0.30 TeV−1cm−2s−1, and the spectral fit to the combined spectra of HESS J1843-033, LHAASO J1843-0338, and TASG J1844-038 implies the existence of a cutoff at 49.5 ± 9.0 TeV. Associations of TASG J1844-038 with SNR G28.6-0.1 and PSR J1844-0346 are also discussed in detail for the first time. © 2023, CC BY.

Gamma rays from HESS J1849−000, a middle-aged TeV pulsar wind nebula (PWN), are observed by the Tibet air shower array and the muon detector array. The detection significance of gamma rays reaches 4.0 σ and 4.4 σ levels above 25 TeV and 100 TeV, respectively, in units of Gaussian standard deviation σ. The energy spectrum measured between 40 TeV −16(E/40 TeV)−2.24±0.41 TeV−1 cm−2 s−1. The gamma-ray energy spectrum from the sub-TeV (E p, cut is estimated at (Equation presented), suggesting that protons are accelerated up to the PeV energy range. Our study thus proposes that HESS J1849−000 should be further investigated as a new candidate for a Galactic PeV cosmic-ray accelerator, PeVatron. © 2023, CC BY.

A reinforcement-learning-based energy-efficient framework for multi-task video analytics pipeline

Deep-learning-based video processing has yielded transformative results in recent years. However, the video analytics pipeline is energy-intensive due to high data rates and reliance on complex inference algorithms, which limits its adoption in energy-constrained applications. Motivated by the observation of high and variable spatial redundancy and temporal dynamics in video data streams, we design and evaluate an adaptive-resolution optimization framework to minimize the energy use of multitask video analytics pipelines. Instead of heuristically tuning the input data resolution of individual tasks, our framework utilizes deep reinforcement learning to dynamically govern the input resolution and computation of the entire video analytics pipeline. By monitoring the impact of varying resolution on the quality of high-dimensional video analytics features, hence the accuracy of video analytics results, the proposed end-to-end optimization framework learns the best non-myopic policy for dynamically controlling the resolution of input video streams to globally optimize energy efficiency. Governed by reinforcement learning, optical flow is incorporated into the framework to minimize unnecessary spatio-temporal redundancy that leads to re-computation, while preserving accuracy. The proposed framework is applied to video instance segmentation which is one of the most challenging computer vision tasks, and achieves better energy efficiency than all baseline methods of similar accuracy on the YouTube-VIS dataset. Angiogenesis is a sequential process to extend new blood vessels from preexisting ones by sprouting and branching. During angiogenesis, endothelial cells (ECs) exhibit inhomogeneous multicellular behaviors referred to as "cell mixing," in which ECs repetitively exchange their relative positions, but the underlying mechanism remains elusive. In this study, we identified the coordinated linear and rotational movements potentiated by cell–cell contact as drivers of sprouting angiogenesis using in vitro and in silico approaches. VE-cadherin confers the coordinated linear motility that facilitated forward sprout elongation, although it is dispensable for rotational movement, which was synchronous without VE-cadherin. Mathematical modeling recapitulated the EC motility in the two-cell state and angiogenic morphogenesis with the effects of VE-cadherin-KO. Finally, we found that VE-cadherin-dependent EC compartmentalization potentiated branch elongations, and confirmed this by mathematical simulation. Collectively, we propose a novel way to understand angiogenesis, based on unique EC behavioral properties that are partially dependent on VE-cadherin function. © 2023, The Authors. Metaheuristic algorithms, implicitly or explicitly, typically aim to achieve a delicate balance between exploration and exploitation when improving a population of solutions for a given optimization problem. Diversity metrics are crucial indicators for both exploration and exploitation, which serves as a valuable tool for assessing the performance of metaheuristic algorithms. Although several metrics for diversity have been proposed, the majority of them are only suitable for problems with continuous space. However, many optimization problems are defined/modeled based on discrete variables, and permutation representation is widely used for modeling real-world problems. Many existing metrics are not applicable to permutation-based problems. Applying other existing metrics to such problems frequently encounters two primary drawbacks: computational cost and effectiveness to represent the actual diversity of the population. To address these drawbacks, a new exclusive diversity metric is proposed in this work for optimization problems modeled by permutations. This method calculates diversity by linearizing and partitioning the problem space based on the population distribution in the space and counting the number of individuals in the partitions. Compared to the eleven available metrics (including both permutation-based and usable non-permutation-based metrics) in the literature, the proposed method demonstrates superior performance, exhibiting acceptable accuracy, stability, sensitivity, and robustness, particularly in the presence of outliers and requiring minimal computational cost. The accuracy of the results of the method is, on average, 35% better than baseline metrics. The computational cost of the method is also nearly 50% better than the fastest available method. Capitalizing backscatter-aided hybrid relay communications with wireless energy harvesting

In this work, we employ multiple energy harvesting relays to assist information transmission from a multi-antenna hybrid access point (HAP) to a receiver. All the relays are wirelessly powered by the HAP in the power-splitting (PS) protocol. We introduce the novel concept of hybrid relay communications, which allows each relay to switch between two radio modes, i.e., the active RF communications and the passive backscatter communications, according to its channel and energy conditions. We envision that the complement transmissions in two radio modes can be exploited to improve the overall relay performance. As such, we aim to jointly optimize the HAP's beamforming, individual relays' radio mode, the PS ratio, and the relays' collaborative beamforming to enhance the throughput performance at the receiver. The resulting formulation becomes a combinatorial and non-convex problem. Thus, we firstly propose a convex approximation to the original problem, which serves as a lower bound of the relay performance. Then, we design an iterative algorithm that decomposes the binary relay mode optimization from the other operating parameters. In the inner loop of the algorithm, we exploit the structural properties to optimize the relay performance with the fixed relay mode in the alternating optimization framework. In the outer loop, different performance metrics are derived to guide the search for a set of passive relays to further improve the relay performance. Simulation results verify that the hybrid relaying communications can achieve 20% performance improvement compared to the conventional relay communications with all active relays. A precise measurement of the cosmic-ray proton spectrum is carried out with the Calorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) and a sharp softening of the energy spectrum above 10 TeV is observed. CALET, located on the International Space Station, has started data taking in October 2015 and has accumulated data for more than seven years without any serious troubles. CALET is pursuing the direct measurement of the main components of high energy cosmic rays up to ~1 PeV in order to understand the cosmic ray acceleration and propagation. Thanks to the thick calorimeter that corresponds to 30 radiation lengths and to ∼1.3 proton interaction lengths, the proton analysis presented in this paper spans a broad energy range from 50 GeV to 60 TeV. Interactive fashion image manipulation, which enables users to edit images with sketches and color strokes, is an interesting research problem with great application value. Existing works often treat it as a general inpainting task and do not fully leverage the semantic structural information in fashion images. Moreover, they directly utilize conventional convolution and normalization layers to restore the incomplete image, which tends to wash away the sketch and color information. In this paper, we propose a novel Fashion Editing Generative Adversarial Network (FE-GAN), which is capable of manipulating fashion images by free-form sketches and sparse color strokes. FE-GAN consists of two modules: 1) a free-form parsing network that learns to control the human parsing generation by manipulating sketch and color; 2) a parsing-aware inpainting network that renders detailed textures with semantic guidance from the human parsing map. A new attention normalization layer is further applied at multiple scales in the decoder of the inpainting network to enhance the quality of the synthesized image. Extensive experiments on high-resolution fashion image datasets demonstrate that the proposed FE-GAN significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on fashion image manipulation.
