We present the fabrication of 3D porous micro-channel for artificial capillary blood vessel model to study the pressure of glomerulus in vitro. The 3D porous micro-channel was fabricated by direct laser writing to mimic the complex structure of capillary blood vessel. It was designed to connect with micro-channels which were fabricated by UV lithography process. The 3D porous micro-channel was made of IP-L to represent the glomerulus structures via direct laser writing. The fabricated structure was observed by optical and electron microscope to reveal the fabrication errors due to shrinkage. Optimization of the direct laser writing method shows that IP-L is a better photoresist compare to Ormocomp for 3D porous micro-channel by solid model fabrication. The PDMS micro-channel has also been fabricated and assembled on the glass with the IP-L porous micro-channel. There was no leakage when fluid flow experiment was performed due to surface tension.

This paper presents a new Rössler chaotic system using exponential nonlinearity and its application to two-channel synchronization. The proposed chaotic system exhibits a chaotic attractor that resembles the original Rössler system with only six-term in three-dimensional ordinary equation systems using the exponential nonlinearity. Chaotic dynamics are described in terms of equilibria, Jacobian matrix, time domain waveforms, chaotic attractors, and bifurcation diagram. The circuit implementation is relatively compact and simple sine the exponential nonlinearity can be achieved by an inherent nonlinearity of single diode. An application to a two-channel secure communication are also demonstrated, showing a fast, low-error and robust synchronization processes.

Applications of Educational Serious Games for Information Technology Related Subjects in Higher Education

Serious games which are designed for purposes rather than pure entertainment have become one of the popular topics these days as they have the potential to be effective and efficient teaching tools which are interactive, attractive and immersive. This study conducts a systematic literature review on the past research on the application of educational serious games in Information Technology (IT) related subjects in tertiary sector, and aims at broadening our understanding of the role of games in education. Herewith, we searched the selected keywords on several academic databases and found an initial set of 3437 studies. Then we excluded papers on the basis of their title, abstract and full text to come up with a set of more relevant studies. This paper proposes a new classification for applied games in this area and classifies them into five categories of simulation games, puzzle-solving games, 3D games, board games, and role-playing games. The results of the data analysis show that majority of the studies have used simulation and role-playing games. A summary of the results and conclusions of each paper is also provided to inform both teachers and researchers on the topic.

3-D Networks-on-Chip (NoC) emerge as a potent solution to address both the interconnection and design complexity problems facing future Multiprocessor System-on-Chips (MPSoCs). Effective run-time mapping on such 3-D NoC-based MPSoCs can be quite challenging, as the arrival order and task graphs of the target applications are typically not known a priori, which can be further complicated by stringent energy requirements for NoC systems. This paper thus presents an energy-aware run-time incremental mapping algorithm (ERIM) for 3-D NoC which can minimize the energy consumption due to the data communications among processor cores, while reducing the fragmentation effect on the incoming applications to be mapped, and simultaneously satisfying the thermal constraints imposed on each incoming application. Specifically, incoming applications are mapped to cuboid tile regions for lower energy consumption of communication and the minimal routing. Fragment tiles due to system fragmentation can be gleaned for better resource utilization. Extensive experiments have been conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm ERIM, and the results are compared against the optimal mapping algorithm (branch-and-bound) and two heuristic algorithms (TB and TL). The experiments show that ERIM outperforms TB and TL methods with significant energy saving (more than 10%), much reduced average response time, and improved system utilization. © 2013 Springer science+Business Media New York & science Press, China.

We present the fabrication of micro-sorting device with multiple-size pores micro-channel. The porous micro-channel has 1, 3, and 5 μm diameter. It was fabricated by direct laser writing. It was designed to connect with micro-channels which were fabricated by UV lithography process. The multiple-size pores micro-channel was made of IP-L as photoresist. The PDMS micro-channel has also been fabricated and assembled on the glass with the IP-L porous micro-channel. A fluid flow test was conducted to the multiple-size pores micro-channel to test the leakage of fluid through the pores on the IP-L material. A micro bead was observed to trap inside the pore. It can be concluded that the pore has less than 100nm diameter. The micro bead is captured due to the pressure gradient between the inside and outside of the multiple-size pores micro-channel. This device has the potential to be used as cell sorter in DNA purification and bacteria filtering. © 2013 IEEE.

To investigate the genetic basis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) to high resolution, the GoT2D and T2D-GENES consortia catalogued variation from whole-genome sequencing of 2,657 European individuals and exome sequencing of 12,940 individuals of multiple ancestries. Over 27M SNPs, indels, and structural variants were identified, including 99% of low-frequency (minor allele frequency [MAF] 0.1-5%) non-coding variants in the whole-genome sequenced individuals and 99.7% of low-frequency coding variants in the whole-exome sequenced individuals. Each variant was tested for association with T2D in the sequenced individuals, and, to increase power, most were tested in larger numbers of individuals (>80% of low-frequency coding variants in ~82 K Europeans via the exome chip, and ~90% of low-frequency non-coding variants in ~44 K Europeans via genotype imputation). The variants, genotypes, and association statistics from these analyses provide the largest reference to date of human genetic information relevant to T2D, for use in activities such as T2D-focused genotype imputation, functional characterization of variants or genes, and other novel analyses to detect associations between sequence variation and T2D.

A prototype of smart sniffing shoes with wireless data communication has been developed as a wearable medical instrument. This intelligent system can be divided into two major parts: (i) chemical gas sensor array installed inside the shoes for foot health monitoring and (ii) wireless data communication using ZigBee technology. The gas sensors for odor sensing were created by embroidering the sensing materials onto a fabric substrate then installed inside the tongue of shoes. Moreover, it was designed as a removable system, convenient for maintenance and cleansing. The embroidered sensor array has been tested with various single chemical components of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with low concentration in a static system. It was found that these sensors could provide a good sensitivity and fast recovery even operated at the room temperature. For preliminary testing on an actual application, this wearable e-nose system was applied to monitor the foot odors, of which results have demonstrated that this system could distinguish foot odors in each duration time. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to confirm the classification of individual foot health.

Nontrivial landmark recommendation using geotagged photos

Online photo-sharing sites provide a wealth of information about user behavior and their potential is increasing as it becomes ever-more common for images to be associated with location information in the form of geotags. In this article, we propose a novel approach that exploits geotagged images from an online community for the purpose of personalized landmark recommendation. Under our formulation of the task, recommended landmarks should be relevant to user interests and additionally they should constitute nontrivial recommendations. In other words, recommendations of landmarks that are highly popular and frequently visited and can be easily discovered through other information sources such as travel guides should be avoided in favor of recommendations that relate to users' personal interests. We propose a collaborative filtering approach to the personalized landmark recommendation task within a matrix factorization framework. Our approach, WMF-CR, combines weighted matrix factorization and category-based regularization. The integrated weights emphasize the contribution of nontrivial landmarks in order to focus the recommendation model specifically on the generation of nontrivial recommendations. They support the judicious elimination of trivial landmarks from consideration without also discarding information valuable for recommendation. Category-based regularization addresses the sparse data problem, which is arguably even greater in the case of our landmark recommendation task than in other recommendation scenarios due to the limited amount of travel experience recorded in the online image set of any given user. We use category information extracted from Wikipedia in order to provide the system with a method to generalize the semantics of landmarks and allow the model to relate them not only on the basis of identity, but also on the basis of topical commonality. Electrooculographic (EOG) artefacts are one of the most common causes of Electroencephalogram (EEG) distortion. In this paper, we propose a method for EOG Blinking Artefacts (BAs) detection and removal from EEG. Normalized Correlation Coefficient (NCC), based on a predetermined BA template library was used for detecting the BA. Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) was applied to the contaminated region and a statistical algorithm determined which Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs) correspond to the BA. The proposed method was applied in simulated EEG signals, which were contaminated with artificially created EOG BAs, increasing the Signal-to-Error Ratio (SER) of the EEG Contaminated Region (CR) by 35dB on average.

Our previous time-of-flight studies with two-dimensional polygonal simulations and one-and three-dimensional experiments showed that the sound-velocity in granular materials in one and two dimensions is of the order of 10% of that of the bulk material, while in three dimensions with spherical beads, it is only of the order of one percent. The conclusion was that the force network in three dimensions leads to a reduction of the sound velocity compared to two dimensions. With our newly completed fully three dimensional discrete element method with polyhedral particles, we investigate the relation between particle shape, size dispersion and sound velocity. The force-law is able to reproduce the sound velocity of the bulk material for space-filling particle packings. We find that the sound velocities in polyhedral assemblies are about 3% to 5% of the bulk sound velocities. This means that the influence of the particle geometry on the contact is significant. Aggregates with particles with many surfaces show higher sound velocities than those with sharp edges. Additionally, solitonic waves were observed which propagated in front of the sound-waves, but only in a relatively short range.
