To deter dangerous driving, we recently proposed an automotive telematics system, which displays safe driving points and rankings to a driver in real time. In this study, we tried to enhance the effectiveness of the system by adding an individual or team competition. Effect measurements of these functions were carried out on a driving simulator using a between-subjects design under three conditions: original ranking, individual competition, and team competition conditions. The experimental route was three lanes and about 6.7 km long. Safe driving points were calculated by the value of the following time and acceleration. After the experiment, we analyzed the following time, rapid acceleration, sudden deceleration, and the number of lane changes. Moreover, questionnaires were used to analyze impressions of the system. When the results were comprehensively examined, although all the conditions considerably enhanced sufficient following time as well as gradual accelerations and decelerations, the individual competition condition had the largest effect. The scores of the questionnaires showed that the participants seemed to be encouraged most by the driving scores and the competition.

Many types of agricultural facilities have been constructed at many places around the world. Although most of the operations are mechanized at these facilities, high noise from mechanical systems often prevents operators from discharging their duties efficiently and results in an unsafe environment. Virtual low-noise space is defined as the space required by operators in order to smoothly communicate in a high-noise environment, i.e., they feel as though they are working in a low-noise environment. The virtual low-noise space has three functions: to reduce the noise around the operators' ears, to communicate by speech without noise, to recreate the audio image on the basis of the operators' mutual positions. In this research, virtual low-noise space was constructed using noise-canceling headphones, microphones, a TV camera, and computers.

In this paper, two global measures of image similarity are compared for use in topological localization of mobile robots. A catadioptric vision system was used as the sensor. Our localization system employs a discrete Bayes filter. Experimental results with real images of an office environment indicate the robot can localize itself from the memorized training images even with the modification of the environment.
