Development of speedy and high-sensitivity pen system for writing pressure and writer identification

This paper describes a pen input system which was developed to obtain subtle writing pressure data. When the writing pressure is small, a conventional electronic pen cannot collate writing pressure data sufficiently. However, the developed pen can collate sufficient data with precision. The developed pen can manipulate any high-speed signatures by means of high-speed writing pressure processing. Further, in the pen input system, writing pressure data can be obtained by using only the pen, without any tablet. The writing pressure information obtained by the developed pen input system is analyzed and applied to writer identification.

The vector space model (VSM) is a conventional information retrieval model, which represents a document collection by a term-by-document matrix. Since term-by-document matrices are usually high-dimensional and sparse, they are susceptible to noise and are also difficult to capture the underlying semantic structure. Additionally, the storage and processing of such matrices places great demands on computing resources. Dimensionality reduction is a way to overcome these problems. Principal component analysis (PCA) and singular value decomposition (SVD) are popular techniques for dimensionality reduction based on matrix decomposition, however they contain both positive and negative values in the decomposed matrices. In the work described here, we use non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) for dimensionality reduction of the vector space model. Since matrices decomposed by NMF only contain non-negative values, the original data are represented by only additive, not subtractive, combinations of the basis vectors. This characteristic of parts-based representation is appealing because it reflects the intuitive notion of combining parts to form a whole. Also NMF computation is based on the simple iterative algorithm, it is therefore advantageous for applications involving large matrices. Using the MEDLINE collection, we experimentally showed that NMF offers great improvement over the vector space model.

Automatic extraction of tumors is needed in a medical field. A 3D image is composed of the sequence of 2D CT images. The extraction of a liver field is difficult, because the CT images include various internal organs. In this paper, an improved active net is proposed to analyze the information of CT images. It is shown this method has the ability as a pre-processing system for extraction of liver tumors.

Robust manipulation strategies of deformable objects is presented. Manipulation of deformable objects can be found in many fields such as the garment industry and food industry. Guidance of multiple points on a deformable object is a primitive operation in the manipulation of deformable objects. In this guidance, the points often cannot be manipulated directly. A model of the manipulated deformable object is needed in order to perform these operations. It is, however, difficult to build a precise model of a deformable object. Thus, we need a robust control scheme that allows us to realize the operations successfully despite discrepancy between a manipulated deformable object and its model. We firstly derive a mathematical model of deformable objects for their manipulation. Second, indirect simultaneous positioning operations of deformable objects are formulated. Then, we propose a PID feedback control law with the rough object model to realize the manipulation. Furthermore, we propose a simple PID feedback control law without deformation model. The validity and the robustness of the proposed manipulation method is shown through simulation results.

The purposes of the paper are to propose and evaluate an immune optimization algorithm inspired by biological immune cell-cooperation, and this algorithm solves the division-of-labor problems in a multi-agent system (MAS). The proposed algorithm solves the problem through interactions between agents, and between agents and the environment. The interactions are performed by division-and-integration processing, inspired by immune cell-cooperation and a similar co-evolutionary approach. The division-and-integration processing optimizes the work domain, and the similar co-evolutionary approach performs equal divisions. To investigate the validity, this algorithm is applied to "N-th agent's Travelling Salesmen Problem" as a typical problem of MAS. The best property for solving via MAS is clarified with some simulations.

This paper deals with a new distance measurement method of color images by using an RGB color histogram. We measure the distance based on the principle of depth-from-focus. It needs to detect focal position among many images with different focusing position. Our method is based on that the more focal area has the less color frequency. By this method, we detect the focal area without using spatial frequency as in conventional methods. The validity of our method is verified by some experimental results.

In order to construct artificial vision system with high performance such as human visual system, it is necessary to elucidate the mechanism of human visual system. In this study, two experiments were designed in order to investigate the relationship between the subjective contours strength and the curvature of the illusory form. Both of the two experiments used the partial eclipse disc as the inducing elements, while the illusory form was an ellipse. Experimental stimuli were those figures whose inducing element was randomly emitted from the standard figure. In Experiment 1, the area of the inducing element was bigger where the curvature of the illusory form was smaller. The result shows that the mean subjective contours strength was stronger when the curvature of illusory form of omitted inducing element is smaller. In Experiment 2, both the area of the inducing element and the curvature of the illusory form were bigger. The experimental results show that the conclusion of Experiment I was still tenable in this different case. The results of psychological experiments can be significant to investigate the mechanism of human visual information processing and to construct an artificial vision system for pattern recognition.

Parallel machine translation (PMT) is a new machine translation paradigm that takes advantage of high-speed and large-memory computers and existing machine translation systems with different characteristics to solve the difficult machine translation problem. PMT is based on technologies of parallel computing, machine translation, and artificial intelligence. A PMT system consists of many machine translation procedures running in parallel, coordinated by a controller to dissolve various ambiguities in machine translation. We have designed and implemented a PMT system based on the above approach at a coarse parallel level. The system consists of four independent machine translation subsystems. Each subsystem is implemented using an existing machine translation technique and has its own characteristics. We present the principles and practice of PMT. We also present some results of experiments with our experimental PMT system and point out some future research on PMT.

PID control schemes have been widely used in most process control systems represented by chemical processes for a long time. However, it is still a very important problem how to determine or tune the PID parameters, because these parameters have a great influence on the stability and the performance of the control system. On the other hand, in the last twenty years, a genetic algorithm(GA) is attracted as one method which gives us suitable answers for search, optimization and machine learning problems. In this paper, a new evolutuinary tuning algorithm of PID parameters is proposed, in which the search area of PID parameters is sharply reduced by considering an effective parameters' area from the viewpoint of the control engineering. Finally, the newly proposed scheme is numerically evaluated on a simulation example.
