Graph neural networks (GNNs) are extensions of deep neural networks to graph-structured data. It has already attracted widespread attention for various tasks such as node classification and link prediction. Existing research focuses more on graph convolutional neural networks (GCNs). However, it is usually overlooked that graph pooling can obtain graph representations by summarizing and down-sampling node information. Meanwhile, existing graph pooling methods mainly use top-k for node selection, but most of them consider only single view information when scoring nodes, and the k values in top-k are usually selected empirically. This work proposes the hierarchical multiview top-k pooling (HMTPool) with deep-Q-networks, which scores nodes taking into account multiview information (considering graph structure and features) and does not rely on the empirical adaptive selection of the best k value. HMTPool is a two-stage process. It first uses a variant GCN and multilayer perceptron to score the nodes from structural and feature perspectives, respectively and then performs fusion operations on the multiview information scores of the nodes. In addition, to select the optimal pooling ratio of top-k, we propose a deep-Q-network-based top-k (DTop-k) node selection method, which can adaptively select the best pooling ratio without prior knowledge. Experimental results on six TUdatasets and two Benchmarking GNNs datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach. © 2020 IEEE.

Healthcare quality assessment and identification of opportunities for improvement are crucially facilitated by patient satisfaction surveys. Traditional approaches sometimes face difficulties in handling substantial amounts of written comments and obtaining real useful data. It presents a new method that combines cloud computing with Natural Language Processing (NLP) approaches to enhance the analysis of patient satisfaction data. By using cloud platforms, it can effectively manage large datasets and provide scalable, cost-efficient processing. The use of NLP methods, such as text mining and sentiment analysis, enables the conversion of unstructured input into structured insights, thereby uncovering the fundamental patient feelings and patterns. This connection enables the analysis of data in real-time also improving the accuracy of interpreting feedback and facilitating fast enhancements in healthcare services. Future research will prioritise the improvement of NLP algorithms and the investigation of supplementary cloud-based technologies to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of patient satisfaction analysis to improved patient care and experience. © 2024 IEEE.

StixelNExT: Toward Monocular Low-Weight Perception for Object Segmentation and Free Space Detection

In this work, we present a novel approach for general object segmentation from a monocular image, eliminating the need for manually labeled training data and enabling rapid, straightforward training and adaptation with minimal data. Our model initially learns from LiDAR during the training process, which is subsequently removed from the system, allowing it to function solely on monocular imagery. This study leverages the concept of the Stixel-World to recognize a medium level representation of its surroundings. Our network directly predicts a 2D multi-layer Stixel-World and is capable of recognizing and locating multiple, superimposed objects within an image. Due to the scarcity of comparable works, we have divided the capabilities into modules and present a free space detection in our experiments section. Furthermore, we introduce an improved method for generating Stixels from LiDAR data, which we use as ground truth for our network. © 2024, CC BY.

The issue of signal outages in sub-THz frequency communication for future 6G networks is addressed by this research. A machine learning method is proposed, employing Random Forest and K-Means algorithms to predict the optimal frequency band and outage probabilities for UAV relays. Both space and frequency diversity are explored to enhance signal strength, and metasurface-carrying UAVs are introduced with a 16 × 16 mm2 design. This design significantly reduces the predicted outage probability from 0.1% to 0.0178%. Finally, triangular and hexagonal UAV swarm formations with metasurfaces are investigated, demonstrating improved performance through heatmap results. © (2024), (Electromagnetics Academy). Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) systems can leverage deep learning (DL) models to provide intelligent applications. However, the training process of such DL models tends to leak privacy when the training data contain sensitive operational and management information. Most studies about privacy-preserving DL require a trusted data collector and thus are not suitable in an untrusted environment. In this paper, we propose a distributed privacy-preserving framework for DL with edge-cloud computing, where direct privacy leakage and indirect privacy leakage of training data are both considered. First, a pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN) is partitioned into two parts for limiting direct privacy leakage of raw data, namely the feature module and the classification module. The feature module consisting of the lower layers of the CNN is deployed on an edge server, which is used to attract the feature of raw data. The feature data is fed to the classification module consisting of the higher layers of the CNN, which is deployed on the cloud server to compute image classification tasks. Second, a perturbation module between the feature module and the classification module is designed for limiting indirect privacy leakage during feature data transmission. The perturbation module uses local differential privacy (LDP) to produce noise in the feature data. Third, to further improve the accuracy, we retrain the classification module with the randomized feature data from edge servers. Experimental results show that the proposed framework achieves high accuracy under low privacy budgets. © 2022 IEEE.

Establishing early warning systems and efficient management of water resources in tidal reaches is crucial for achieving adequate flood protection. In tidal reaches, the river stage interacts non-linearly with tides (downstream) and discharge (upstream), making the modeling of river processes extremely complex. data-driven methods have proven helpful for predicting the river stage parameter. This contrasts with existing numerical approaches, which suffer from several limitations. The aim of this study was to predict the river stage of the upstream part of the tidal river, where the influence of salinity is present during the summer months. Using the CNN-LSTM model trained on historical records of the discharge (station of the variable to be predicted), the river stage of three downstream stations, and the point of interest, the prediction was carried out up to 24 hours in advance. By incorporating feature engineering, we achieved an improvement in model results for the longest horizon, confirmed by standard performance metrics, and considered it efficient and effective for risk mitigation. Introducing feature engineering into the data preprocessing resulted in a predictive performance improvement of 0.98% for the Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) metric, 7.0% for the root mean squared error (RMSE) metric, and 7.25% for the mean absolute error (MAE) metric over the second and third-best scenarios using a spectrogram and time-series data.

Most cell types are mechanosensitive, their activities such as differentiation, proliferation and apoptosis, can be influenced by the mechanical environment through mechanical stimulation. In three dimensional (3D) mechanobiological in vitro studies, the porous structure of scaffold controls the local mechanical environment that applied to cells. Many previous studies have focused on the topological design of homogeneous scaffold struts. However, the impact of scaffold inhomogeneity on the mechanical environment, which is essential in mechanobiological application (e.g. for multi-cells co-culture), remains elusive. In this study, we use a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach together with data analysis to study the influence of a porosity gradient (10 %–30 % porosity difference) on the local and global mechanical environment (wall shear stress - WSS) within the commonly used structures of triple periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS). In addition, the anisotropy of internal WSS and scaffold permeability caused by the porosity gradient is investigated. It is found that the influence of anisotropy on the average WSS and permeability is up to 11 % and 31 %, respectively. These results, as theoretical references will be useful to tissue engineers and mechanobiologists for scaffold design and in vitro experiment planning such as integrated use of graded scaffold and bioreactors for specific cell types. © 2025 The Authors

Endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is a standard procedure performed worldwide for diseases of the nose and sinuses, but it is highly technical and requires effective training. A system for evaluating the skill level of surgeons using machine learning based on measurement data from endoscopic sinus surgeries performed with a 3D sinus model has been developed. In this study, an analysis using SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) values was conducted to investigate behaviors that significantly reflect surgeons' skill proficiency. Additionally, feature reduction was performed using a variable reduction method, eliminating features in ascending order of their contributions as calculated by SHAP. This approach aimed not only to mitigate the risk of overfitting due to a decrease in explanatory variables but also to improve the accuracy of classifying surgeons based on skill differences. The results demonstrated that reducing features based on SHAP contributions led to an improvement in classification accuracy. © 2025 IEEE.
