Emotion recognition in conversation (ERC) aims at accurately identifying emotional states expressed in conversational content. Existing ERC methods, although relying on semantic understanding, often encounter challenges when confronted with incomplete or misleading semantic information. In addition, when dealing with the interaction between emotional and semantic information, existing methods are often difficult to effectively distinguish the complex relationship between the two, which affects the accuracy of emotion recognition. To address the problems of semantic misdirection and emotional cross-talk encountered by traditional models when confronted with complex conversational data, we propose a semantic and emotional dual channel (SEDC) strategy for emotion recognition in conversations to process emotional and semantic information independently. Under this strategy, emotion information provides an auxiliary recognition function when the semantics are unclear or lacking, enhancing the accuracy of the model. Our model consists of two modules: the emotion processing module accurately captures the emotional features of each utterance through contrastive learning, and then constructs a dialogue emotion propagation map to simulate the emotional information conveyed in the dialogue;the semantic processing module combines an external knowledge base to enhance the semantic expression of the dialogue through knowledge enhancement strategies. This divide-and-conquer approach allows us to more deeply analyze the emotional and semantic dimensions of complex dialogues. Experimental results on the IEMOCAP, EmoryNLP, MELD, and DailyDialog datasets show that our approach significantly outperforms existing techniques and effectively improves the accuracy of dialogue emotion recognition. Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient Based Energy Management Strategy for Fuel Cell/Battery/Ultracapacitor Hybrid Electric Vehicles Considering Unknown Terrain Information

For fuel cell/battery/ultracapacitor hybrid electric vehicles (FCHEV), the complex topology and unknown terrain information pose challenges to fuel cell efficiency, power sources lifespan, and fuel economy. In this paper, a hierarchical energy management strategy (EMS) considering unknown terrain information is constructed to optimize the demand power allocation of FCHEV based on twin delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3). Firstly, to improve the fuel economy of FCHEV, an adaptive fuzzy filter-based upper-level frequency separation is designed considering negative power. Secondly, to achieve the minimum fuel consumption, a TD3-based lower-level EMS is designed, where the unknown terrain information is predicted through Multi-LSTM network and considered in the TD3 framework. The optimal state of charge obtained by dynamic programming (DP) based on the demand power and predicted terrain information, is considered in the reward function of TD3, as well as the optimal experience solved by DP based on historical road data is integrated into the designed hybrid experience replay. Finally, the simulation results under SC03 and test driving cycles indicate that compared to traditional TD3-based EMS, the fuel economy is increased by 33.3% and 27.5%, respectively, and can reach the benchmark level of 80% and 80.9% of DP, respectively. © 2023, The Authors. Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA) aims to adapt a model trained on a labeled source domain to an unlabeled target domain by addressing the domain shift. Existing Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA) methods often fall short in fully leveraging contextual information from the target domain, leading to suboptimal decision boundary separation during source and target domain alignment. To address this, we introduce GrabDAE, an innovative UDA framework designed to tackle domain shift in visual classification tasks. GrabDAE incorporates two key innovations: the Grab-Mask module, which blurs background information in target domain images, enabling the model to focus on essential, domain-relevant features through contrastive learning;and the Denoising Auto-Encoder (DAE), which enhances feature alignment by reconstructing features and filtering noise, ensuring a more robust adaptation to the target domain. These components empower GrabDAE to effectively handle unlabeled target domain data, significantly improving both classification accuracy and robustness. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets, including VisDA-2017, OfficeHome, and Office31, demonstrate that GrabDAE consistently surpasses state-of-the-art UDA methods, setting new performance benchmarks. By tackling UDA’s critical challenges with its novel feature masking and denoising approach, GrabDAE offers both significant theoretical and practical advancements in domain adaptation. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

This paper investigates the consensus tracking problem of leader-follower multi-agent systems. Different from most existing works, dynamics of all the agents are assumed completely unknown, whereas some input-output data about the agents are available. It is well known from the Willems et al. Fundamental Lemma that when inputs of a linear time-invariant (LTI) system are persistently exciting, all possible trajectories of the system can be represented in terms of a finite set of measured input-output data. Building on this idea, the present paper proposes a purely data-driven distributed consensus control policy which allows all the follower agents to track the leader agent’s trajectory. It is shown that for a linear discrete-time multi-agent system, the corresponding controller can be designed to ensure the global synchronization with local data. Even if the data are corrupted by noises, the proposed approach is still applicable under certain conditions. Numerical examples corroborate the practical merits of the theoretical results.

Energy-Based Control Approaches for Weakly Coupled Electromechanical systems

This paper addresses the regulation and trajectory-tracking problems for two classes of weakly coupled electromechanical systems. To this end, we formulate an energy-based model for these systems within the port-Hamiltonian framework. Then, we employ Lyapunov theory and the notion of contractive systems to develop control approaches in the port-Hamiltonian framework. Remarkably, these control methods eliminate the need for solving partial differential equations or implementing any change of coordinates, and are endowed with a physical interpretation. We also investigate the effect of coupled damping on the transient performance and convergence rate of the closed-loop system. Finally, the applicability of the proposed approaches is illustrated in two applications of electromechanical systems via simulations. © 2024, CC BY.

This paper presents an adaptive online learning framework for systems with uncertain parameters to ensure safety-critical control in non-stationary environments. Our approach consists of two phases. The initial phase is centered on a novel sparse Gaussian process (GP) framework. We first integrate a forgetting factor to refine a variational sparse GP algorithm, thus enhancing its adaptability. Subsequently, the hyperparameters of the Gaussian model are trained with a specially compound kernel, and the Gaussian model’s online inferential capability and computational efficiency are strengthened by updating a solitary inducing point derived from newly samples, in conjunction with the learned hyperparameters. In the second phase, we propose a safety filter based on high order control barrier functions (HOCBFs), synergized with the previously trained learning model. By leveraging the compound kernel from the first phase, we effectively address the inherent limitations of GPs in handling high-dimensional problems for real-time applications. The derived controller ensures a rigorous lower bound on the probability of satisfying the safety specification. Finally, the efficacy of our proposed algorithm is demonstrated through real-time obstacle avoidance experiments executed using both simulation platform and a real-world 7-DOF robot.

Studies have shown that learning personal stories could help provide individualized eldercare services. However, personal stories are often disordered because of the scattered collection, including informal interviews or daily interactions, which brings difficulties in acquiring valuable information quickly. One solution to this problem is to extract events from personal stories and automatically organize them in chronological order. Events extracted by current methods from social media or news corpus are mainly organized in a linear structure. These works usually focus on the event time and ignore the consistency of event contents when organizing events. This paper aims to organize events into a tree structure based on an event network, with stem nodes representing key event topics and branch nodes representing detailed events. Social workers or caregivers can clarify the life experience of the older adults quickly through the event tree and have a preliminary understanding of them. The experiments show that the event tree generated by our method has a better performance in consistency than current event organization methods. A survey study shows that our method achieves the highest logical coherence for the event tree branches compared with other algorithms. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Medical image segmentation plays a crucial role in computer-aided diagnosis. However, existing methods heavily rely on fully supervised training, which requires a large amount of labeled data with time-consuming pixel-wise annotations. Moreover, accurately segmenting lesions poses challenges due to variations in shape, size, and location. To address these issues, we propose a novel Dual-scale Enhanced and Cross-generative consistency learning framework for semi-supervised medical image Segmentation (DEC-Seg). First, we propose a Cross-level Feature Aggregation (CFA) module that integrates cross-level adjacent layers to enhance the feature representation ability across different resolutions. To address scale variation, we present a scale-enhanced consistency constraint, which ensures consistency in the segmentation maps generated from the same input image at different scales. This constraint helps handle variations in lesion sizes and improves the robustness of the model. Furthermore, we propose a cross-generative consistency scheme, in which the original and perturbed images can be reconstructed using cross-segmentation maps. This consistency constraint allows us to mine effective feature representations and boost the segmentation performance. To produce more accurate segmentation maps, we propose a Dual-scale Complementary Fusion (DCF) module that integrates features from two scale-specific decoders operating at different scales. Extensive experimental results on polyp segmentation from colonoscopy images, skin lesion segmentation from dermoscopic images, and Brain glioma segmentation from MRI images demonstrate the effectiveness of our DEC-Seg against other state-of-the-art semi-supervised segmentation approaches. © 2024, The Authors. This article looks at the sustainability of various artificial intelligence (AI) methods. In recent months, AI methods have received a great deal of public attention and the benefits for sustainability have been emphasised. However, the ecological impacts of AI methods must also be considered in this debate. This article presents an overview of various approaches to sustainability assessment and addresses issues relating to energy consumption and the associated Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) calculation for a concrete agricultural AI-use case.

Learning Fast and Precise Pixel-to-Torque Control

In the field, robots often need to operate in unknown and unstructured environments, where accurate sensing and state estimation (SE) becomes a major challenge. Cameras have been used to great success in mapping and planning in such environments, as well as complex but quasi-static tasks such as grasping, but are rarely integrated into the control loop for unstable systems. Learning pixel-to-torque control promises to allow robots to flexibly handle a wider variety of tasks. Although they do not present additional theoretical obstacles, learning pixel-to-torque control for unstable systems that that require precise and high bandwidth control still poses a significant practical challenge, and best practices have not yet been established. To help drive reproducible research on the practical aspects of learning pixel-to-torque control, we propose a platform that can flexibly represent the entire process, from lab to deployment, for learning pixel-to-torque control on a robot with fast, unstable dynamics: the vision-based Furuta pendulum. The platform can be reproduced with either off-the-shelf or custom-built hardware. We expect that this platform will allow researchers to quickly and systematically test different approaches, as well as reproduce and benchmark case studies from other labs. We also present a first case study on this system using DNNs which, to the best of our knowledge, is the first demonstration of learning pixel-to-torque control on an unstable system with update rates faster than 100 Hz.
